It's a nice show to just put on in the background and occasionally pay attention to. It's pretty good for a kid's show, but highly overrated because most star wars fans have the sensibilities of the target audience, 8-14 year old boys

thankfully it's episodic enough that if you're not feeling a particular episode/arc you can skip most of them without much issue.

  3. 3 months ago

Tbh I wouldn't. If you really like Star Wars there are a few good clip compilations of Anakin and Obi-Wan on youtube, but 90% of the show is the adventures of Filoni's Donut Steel

Are those screenshots on top supposed to be bad? The one thing the tv show did well is it made Obi-Wan's whole "your father was a good man and a good friend" thing seem genuine and not the delusional ramblings of an old man who apparently never noticed his buddy was a fricking psycho

Anakin and Obi-Wan had a lot of friction when he was a Padawan. They become like brothers after he gets knighted. That’s true for both the EUand New Canon.

The first season is "this is pretty much completely garbage".
The second season is "if only they could do better"
The third season is "hey, there's some real potential here"
The fourth season is "Why was it not like this from the start?"
After that it's fine to pretty good if you really like Star Wars.
Not counting Mortis, which is moronic fan fiction, and the Night Sisters who should have stayed out of canon for being The Force branded for Hot Topic teens in 2009.

The Bad Batch is better, but you get less enjoyment out of it if you haven't gone through The Clone Wars.
I remember Rebels being mostly pretty bad until maybe the last half dozen episodes.

Bad Batch is infuriating to watch for me because when it actually plays to its strengths it's amazing, but most of the time it refuses to do that and instead tries to be generic kid adventures. The Empire centric episodes do wonders for the worldbuilding and challenge characters like Crosshair on their fundamental ideals.
Those episodes are better than anything TCW has done but for every episode like that, there's 10 more episodes of the reddit batch running around on milquetoast adventures that don't provide any character work or plot development.
I really hope after S2 the producers realized what their actual strengths are and they'll focus on making the final season serious and story-heavy instead of mindless romps.
Oh well at least the mindless romps are more entertaining than when Rebels tried to do the same.

I think you're right. The worst part of The Bad Batch is that they can't completely let go of being a little kid show. Animated Mandalorian Season 1. That's all people ask for as far as the theme is concerned.

        >The Empire centric episodes do wonders for the worldbuilding and challenge characters like Crosshair on their fundamental ideals.
Never liked the brain chip shit compared to the old canon so the reveal that Crosshair went full Empire believer completely of his own decision was a kino moment.

          Anonymous

Clone obedience in TBB is something of a middle ground between the inhibitor chips and the genuine belief in the Empire, it's not presented as a 0 or 100% brainwash button. Plenty of clones are like Crosshair in the sense that even without inhibitor chips they still want to believe in the promise of galactic order and the vigilance only an empire could bring. On the flipside there's also some clones that start feeling disillusioned or turn traitor of their own volition even if they still have the chips. After some time passes, the personal values and experiences of clones factor into their decisions far more than the inhibitor chips do.

            >it's not presented as a 0 or 100% brainwash button
It is exactly how it was presented ever since introduction of brain chips in TCW
            >. Plenty of clones are like Crosshair
Crosshair just pulled out of nowhere for meta-reason "we need a signature antagonist for the good guys"

I considered making a thread about this but since you've seen The Bad Batch I may as well ask in this thread:
      >Omega is special because she's completely unaltered unlike normal clones
      >She's genetically identical to Jango Fett
      >This is why she's important in the story
      >But she's female
Is this ever explained? Did I miss something?

        Anonymous

You didn't miss anything, we don't know anything yet. I don't think it's really that she's female, I'm thinking she's a tiny bit force sensitive. And if that's the case, figuring her out would actually be useful to Palpatine.

        Anonymous

for plot purposes she's special to the empire because she's basically raw DNA from django fett and they're scientifically interested in it. the exact nature of why she's a girl probably won't be explained, it's just a contrivance for story purposes
for the characters it's because the batch have no purpose in life after o66 so they latch onto what will give them sense of purpose, i.e. looking after a child

Only with a watching guide that picks out all the actually good episodes from the filler slop. Like 80% of the episodes are useless filler that not only defeats the show's premise but they are also completely inconsequential to characters and the overarching narrative.
This problem is shared by all the SW animated shows with that artstyle. The good stuff is good, but it's only 20% of the show while the oher 80% is spinning its wheels uselessly and pointlessly in random runarounds only children would consider interesting.

    https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Clone-Wars-Refocused-COMPLETE/id/80467/page/1
    >THE CLONE WARS: REFOCUSED presents the entire Clone Wars as a complete series of five seasons of about ten TV-length episodes each. Now structured and presented with the conventions of a more mature modern TV drama, it tells the complete narrative of the Clone Wars, retaining all the most important and enjoyable elements of the show, whilst trimming a vast amount of the weaker content, saving you over 17 hours total while still telling the same core narratives. Episodes have been refined, refocused, reordered and recontextualised to maximise story quality and viewer enjoyment, both for the show’s own complete end-to-end story, and for those seeking a supplement or introduction to new canon like the Mandalorian, Bad Batch, and wider Filoniverse.
    >It’s my intention that you should be able to replace the original official release of The Clone Wars with Refocused, losing nothing of importance for your enjoyment of the wider franchise, whilst getting the maximum possible enjoyment out of the story of the clone wars.

It’s corny until like season three. Then it has high and low spots. It’s okay. It salvages the prequels from being a terrible slop fest. To actually being coherent because it explains things behind the scenes and totally makes up for George’s shit story telling.

      only partially
they're good for the worldbuilding, for the clones and to show the gradual slide of republic to pre-empire
but in terms of enriching characters like anakin or palpatine, TCW really doesn't do much
there's also way too many bizarre storylines like anakin being shown visions of darth vader but then forgetting them, ahsoka dying and then being resurrected, palpatine being kidnapped by bounty hunters, etc. that just makes TCW feel more like star wars megafans wanting to play with the toys rather than improve the prequel era

        >palpatine being kidnapped by bounty hunters

If you liked George Lucas' six movies, you might as well watch his show to get the fuller picture. It's the only real Star Wars besides the original six films and the last thing Lucas worked on. The pilot movie and the first season are a little rocky, very TPM in tone, and the animation is rough around the edges (still has quite a few good episodes, though), but it gets consistently good with S2 and onward.

Why do fans act like he was so heavily involved? He was just as involved with this as he was with CW03 and its tie-in media. Luceno and Stover went to his house to help them write Labyrinth of Evil ad the RotS novelization.

        >Why do fans act like he was so heavily involved?
        Because he was.

        Incorrect.
        >"Well, the Genndy show was an experiment that we did with Cartoon Network that was 5 minutes each, they went sort of where commercials normally go, and it was an experiment, not only in doing five-minute shows, but it was an experiment in trying to translate "Star Wars" into an animated medium, and we felt very good about that. We thought it turned out really well, and we then took it to the next level, which was to do a full-out animated series of "The Clone Wars." There's not much overlap. Genndy did most of the animation and most of the stories for the first experimental series, and this one I'm pretty much following the mythology and the rules of the features, so it's a little bit different, but it's very much like the features except it's in animation."—Exclusive: A Rare Sit-Down with Mr. George Lucas by Edward Douglas, published by comingsoon.net (March 17, 2008)

        >"I am the father of our Star Wars movie world - the filmed entertainment, the features and now the animated film and television series,” he says. “And I’m going to do a live-action television series. Those are all things I am very involved in: I set them up and I train the people and I go through them all. I’m the father; that’s my work. Then we have the licensing group, which does the games, toys and books, and all that other stuff. I call that the son - and the son does pretty much what he wants.” He laughs. “Once in a while, they ask a question like ‘Can we kill off Yoda?’, things like that, but it’s very loose. Then we have the third group, the holy ghost, which is the bloggers and fans. They have created their own world. I worry about the father’s world. The son and holy ghost can go their own way."—George Lucas: Mr Emperor strikes back by The Sunday Times, published by Times Online (July 27, 2008)

It's fine. Really good as background noise. I watched through it while I was drawing. It's got some high highs that are absolutely worth watching, but to get there you kind of need to get through an equivalent slog of episodes that range from boring to bad, especially in the first seasons. And frankly Filoni just has awful taste. Some episodes feel like straight up fanfiction from a kid on deviantart, and you can expect that a character only really gets to consistently shine if Filoni personally likes them. All in all the good was worth putting up with the bad though and I think it does an especially nice job of expanding the relationship between Anakin and those around him, especially Obi-Wan.
