It didn't work at all as live action. Cera is a big miscast, though he worked in the animation, don't know if that's because he's changed as an actor or simply because I'm not looking at him and associating him with every other Cera role.

Yeah I don't like it. I thought I was the target audience, I was around 15 when it came out, the perfect target demographic. It completely fell flat for me because it was a story about handsome, likable and socially outgoing jock who for some fricking reason is miscast to be played by Michael Sera. And overall video game aesthetic and references, it felt like I was a baby and movie kept trying to distract me with various superficial references. You know how do you distract a baby easily? You just take out your keychain and start shaking it in front of baby's face, because it's a shiny thing that makes noise, it's loud, it's annoying, but it's entertaining for baby. That's how the movie felt like to me with terribly miscast main character.
