By necessity the show created situations of extreme, acute bullying that seemed almost plausible but stretched credulity. In the real world if you are low enough in the social hierarchy, it's just as bad, but it's not one elaborate event, it's chronic. You probably knew someone like this in school - the one scapegoat that everyone bullied relentlessly and opportunistically.

In 11th grade I had my locker next to a really depressed looking ~13 year old muslim girl whose locker was filled with pictures of bishounen and other anime boys. I’m not sure what happened exactly, but from what I heard some bullies stole her diary from her backpack, and it contained suicide preparation notes which mentioned her killing herself in a scool bathroom to “show the teachers what’s really going on at school” and a playlist of anime music to listen to during her suicide. The school staff reacted by evacuating every bathroom stall, tracking her down (she was apparently skipping class at the time) and telling all the students about her plan.
Her bullies were hysterically laughing through the whole announcement. Never saw her again.

I really think most people deserve to die. I never feel sad anymore when I hear about school shootings or whatever. I don't care how edgy and immature it seems, most humans just do not deserve to be alive at all.

No I'm not talking about "I couldn't handle the bantz between chums" I was literally taught to make friends of enemies. Same. I was a white knight fgt in kindergarten. These two girls in my class would get teased and bullied by this one kid and a couple of his friends. I'd fight them every day at recess throughout the entire school year. Fast forward to 1st grade, bully guy are in the same class and we became fast friends. His dad was a teacher at a different school so when we'd hang out we'd go to his dad's school and play computer games in the library or the sports equipment in the gym. Shit was so cash.
Fast Forward 20 years and he stole my brother's gf away and married her lol

Not on the level it was presented in this show, where seemingly literally everybody at the roller rink is in on it, but some people do get relentlessly bullied. Obviously the Duffer brothers are incapable of writing anything with nuance so instead just conjured up this absurd scenario where her bullies are evil psychopaths.

Generally bullying takes the form of the psychic kids, where they just gang up on you in quiet areas and kick the shit out of you.

Simply not true. Some people deserve to be bullied, like homosexuals and especially trannies. There used to be a gay that lived a few blocks down from my place, my brother and I would chaase him whenever we saw him.

The problem is that the bullies are just a plot device.
It isn’t the Duffer Brothers trying to tackle a serious subject. It is just them using a cliche to develop Eleven and push her in the direction of the story they want.

They exist to make El feel powerless and frustrated.
The bullies picking on her gives her reason to want to get her powers back as soon as possible. That way she can fight Freddy Krueger Akira.

Because if El wasn’t being picked on and her school-life was good/mediocre/not-awful, she would not have the drive to get her powers back. Unless you have the characters tell El to get her powers so she can fight a evil dream guy but that isn’t a satisfying enough reason.

Back in highschool all the guys in my class teamed up to bully this fat neckbeard dickhead nobody liked. He was always late for class so we just waited for him to arrive and then as soom as he opened the door we stood up and pointed at him with both hands while shouting "homosexual". He immediatly slammed the door and started throwing chairs in the hallway while screaming. Keep in mind that this was a turboautist who was a genuinely terrible person who was infamous even among the other autists, the kid who came up with the plan was even the nicest kid in class. It was more of a revenge for all the shit we had to put up with than just us torturing him because he was weird.

maybe he was like that because you teased him like that all the time.

He was like that from the very fricking beginning. He was the biggest bully of us all, it had nothing to do with us teasing him. He was the loud, insufferable kind of autistic and just a plain twat on top of it. He used to tell stories about how he beat up tiny little nerds for stupid reasons (like from the story it would be obvious that some chick manipulated him into doing it, which he was oblivious to), and he'd think he sounded super fricking cool. Wasn't above physically intimidating people or voilence either. We all called him a c**t constantly because he was one.

Kek we had one of those turbo autists too. He would routinely flip shit and throw chairs across the room.

Chris Chan has no grasp on reality whatsoever and has done batshit stuff on his own before countless of times. It is completely believable that he decided to rape Barb without anyone telling him to do so. Of course it's far from unlikely that he did get manipulated into doing it, but there is no proof for that.

There was a kid in my class in 8th grade who everyone had it out for. People would always throw shit at him and call him a homosexual. During all hours of the day all the popular types had it out for this kid. I would be friends with him but was too much of a pussy to stand up and whenever the "cool kids" were watching I'd join in on the taunting. Keep in mind this kid really never did anything to anyone. One day he pushed me on the ground while crying and told me I was just like the rest of the bullies. Ran out of the room.

There was this autistic kid in my class who'd constantly do weird shit for (negative) attention. Kind of like a real life Pink guy kind of character, he did some funny shit man but it was hard to tell when he was joking and when he was serious (if there ever even was a distinction). Was a good kid though, secretly he was pretty smart and self-aware and clearly a good person. I was way too hard om him. Granted he was intentionally asking for negative attention but I still regret giving it to him, especially since I might have gone a little overboard. I said some not so nice things to him that he definitely didn't deserve. All he ever did were harmless stunts like sitting at our lunch table and insisting that we were "the breakfast club" and then singing "DON'T YOU, FORGET ABOUT ME" really loud (he'd really get into it). Anyway he killed himself.

Or your move into a new area and some butthole thinks you're not the right kind fo person for the area and starts messing with your shit like having their dog shit on your lawn or report you to the HOA and forces you to spend money having to repaint your front door and shit like. There's countless examples like this of adults just acting like butthole to people for seemingly no reason other than that they're just looking for people to bully.

Is this a good thing? i suppose it depends on if you think upholding the existing social order is good

My sense is that most bullying is not as physical anymore, but with social media you can get recorded and harassed 24/7 by buttholes (cyberbullying). As Tyler said yeah turn the computer off but knowing people are talking shit about you 24/7 and you can't stop them can be mentally taxing, especially as an insecure kid.

Idk but in middle school the bullies used to go after this nerd who was even shorter than me, put him in trashcans and stuff.
What made me cringe in Stranger Things is he was getting bullied during kickball and he actually tried to kamehameha the bullies just like 11. It was like a damn flashback.

Back in high school in the 80s at my school, a girl group was kissed off that a shy girl said hi to her boyfriend. So between classes the girl group pulled the shy girl into the restroom….stripped off her top shirt and bra and pushed the girl outside the restroom as the bell rang and everyone was leaving classes. The shy girl was humiliated as everyone laughed at her trying to cover herself.

So yes, shit liked this happened back then. Especially girl bullies who don’t just beat people up but humiliate them.

In the early 1980s, my aunt got jumped by a girl gang wearing matching leather jackets with their gang name patched on the back.

Is that a real question? Highschool kids are all sociopathic. They will laugh as they stomp your head into the pavement and then make fun of your grieving family when you die. They're pure evil.

I dont know what you're talking about I went to a skating rink as a kid and the local bullies skated in circles around me holding hands and laughing for like two hours straight and it scarred me for life

I was a jock and went to college and played sports. I witnessed horrible bullying among normies and among the HS team.

The dumb jock guys were cruel and sadistic. Normal intelligence or smart jocks avoided those tards and had normal friends. On some level you knew they were mad cause they were fricked.....too slow and weak to play college, too dumb to even make minimum ncaa standards (2.5 & 700 sat)

Nope, they ruined the show for me. Goes beyond cringe into "I actually can't believe they tried to get away with this" territory.

2 of them are in prison now for robbing a store , lol

I got bullied in middle school, but then the mortgage crisis hit and all the poor people in my otherwise-rich area lost their houses and had to move back to whatever working class slum they originally spawned from. It was smooth sailing from there.

Ideal school experience. Overall a reason why 8th grade was pretty awesome.

Why didn’t Will help her out more on how to fit in and not be bullied?

Hell, Jonathan’s suppose to be her older brother and he’s a senior at the school.

Can’t between the two of them, go up to this freshmen b***h and her posse and get her to back off.

Because Will is secretly gay and was a huge dork at Hawkins. His only friends were Mike, Lucas and Dustin.

I'm pretty sure Jonathan graduated from high school along with Nancy and Steve. Idk. I can't remember.

There was a gay kid who wore leopard print tights and shit when it was still weird. Gotta give him credit for being himself, but he was bullied pretty hard. Really quiet, but nice kid was picked on a lot. My friends used to pick on the annoying autistic kid on the bus who flashed his dick. I had a couple of those overgrown poor and damaged kids who would pick on me some. Weird vibe from that one, like they couldn’t decide if they should be a bully or friend. Popular kids would talk down to me sometimes, but that was more middle school. Nothing anything like ST

In her defense they were all people who were trying to imprison her in a secret lab to be experimented on and kill her friends so they kind of deserved it.

The elaborate set up with the roller rink not so much, but one of the 'mean girls' did among many other things over the course of highschool throw a milkshake on me so I could kind of relate to that part.
    The b***h.
