Do scary horror films exist?

watched picrelated and what a genuine piece of trash it is. YET it is beloved by a lot of people - a pretentious crowd who thinks "horror shouldn't be scary with cheap jumpscares etc"

I like this movie for the occult aspects, not because it's scary.

if you're a rational adult male you're probably just not scared easily. it would just come down to what personally makes you afraid, differs from person to person. the ring was such a commonly effective movie because static used to be a common thing people would run into on their television sets, it gave people the chills every time they saw it on their TVs for a long time. but if you're level headed and aren't worried about zombie spirits crawling out of your TV it can fall flat on you, that's just adulthood.

I recently watched through all of del toro's cabinet of curiosities, which had an assortment of different kinds of horror. nothing particularly scared me, but graveyard rats had me on edge because of the claustrophobic setting, and I enjoyed pickman's model a lot because of the blending of reality with insanity, the idea that art can draw you to see incomprehensible things hits close to home with me because of an experience I had reading a book once.

not scared, it just felt like I was going insane while reading a specific PKD book, it made me question reality and the experience had a story arc and finale and everything, it was really bizarre and probably the most supernatural thing I've ever encountered in life.

            >At the end of Hereditary, Peter, out of shock and desperation after seeing the dead bodies of his parents and more, jumps from the attic window, only to be reanimated by the possession of the demon King Paimon. Peter is then crowned by his grandmother's coven, which might have included someone very close to Peter.

            >So, no, Peter did not die from the fall. Besides, it was a short fall into soft mud. Right after he falls to the ground, we hear a thud which indicates that

            He didn't die moron

I don't think a demon controls his human vessel 100% of the time, but he is definitely inside the girl and then later her brother

I saw this in the cinema with a woman because she likes "scary" movies and even she thought it was awful. Any praise of this film is baffling. It's genuinely a bad film but I guess the good performances sold it? Fricking terrible movie.

How is bad? The acting is great, the dinner scene is excellent drama. Good pacing which (a rarity in horror) manages to combine drama and horror elements well without either being a drag. Extremely well shot, great soundtrack. The ending gets a bit silly, but it's not a huge issue. Normalhomosexuals were mad because NO WAY a horror film is very upsetting and depressing.
And Cinemaphile hates it out of sheer contrarianism. It's not even particularly slow paced, the pacing is moderate, nothing much out of ordinary. Midsommar was a bit slower, and it was overall a worse film (mostly because it doesn't really build into anything interesting, it's just the characters getting killed one by one, and the cult itself is not as relevant to the dramatic aspects as it was in Hereditary where the family breaking apart is essential for the cult to achieve their goal).

Have you seen people in despair IRL? They act like this. Also, this board loves The Shining (rightfully so) and Toni Colette's acting is almost exactly modeled after Shelley Duvall's performance (a fantastic performance as well) from it.

Yes, they don't go on eloquent 10 minute rants. Mike Flanagan's movies have the same problem, him and Aster don't understand how human being actually talk and react to pain.

The dinner scene isn't just despair. The child she liked is dead and she's angry at her son and she also never really liked in the first place, so she goes off the rails later into the rant.
And then she encounters supernatural shit, and her other rant is when she's trying to summon the spirit of her daughter, of course she's going to be bumbling and ecstatic during it. I don't remember anything else that would constitute for a "10 minute rant".

The shining was kubrick's worst. My favorite part was when he positioned a tripod in the middle of a hallway, it takes a real genius to figure something like that out.

I completely disagree. I think it's probably his third best, after 2001 and Full Metal Jacket which is my favorite. Although I think all three are 10/10 films.

A movie is not scary unless you're below age 16. It's all make believe. Adults need to do shit like "get into the mood" for a horror movie because the film by itself isn't scary when you're aren't actively trying to convince yourself to be scared.
A documentary on some harrowing subject can be scary and very upsetting I guess.
