Only really for Re:Zero. Also had a phase when I was 13 for when I desperately wanted to have sex with Gardevoir from Pokemon. Read some of the most depraved stuff imaginable. One time I came across a fanfic in a post apocalyptic world where pokemon had taken over and started exterminating humans. The main character was a 14 year old who was stalked, beaten, raped, groomed, and tortured by an adult Gardevoir. This went on over 100 chapters. I looked at the rest of the author’s work and they were just variations of the same, with the same male teenage protag being raped by the exact same Gardevoir in high school, futuristic, police, and every other setting you can imagine.

Kudos aren't that great for sorting in there. It's mostly because AO3 userbase are mostly woman so the popular fanfic in there aren't that good at all imo.
If you filter out every single garbage ship that is popular amongst women then you still tend to end up with decent stuff when sorting by kudos from my experience. Better than sifting through a sea of fics written by twelve year olds.
To be fair most of the fandoms I’ve been in have been predominantly male so maybe this fails in predominantly female ones
FFN and various different internet forums like spacebattle and sufficient velocity is usually better for browsing fanfic. Mostly because fanfic in there are mostly not shipping.
SB and SV are definitely good, especially if you’re into scifi, superheroes or anime.

That's weird, because if you actually look at fujoshis, all their sexual lust is directed towards the sub, to the point where having favoritism towards the top is relatively rare.
I think it's a mix of wanting to dom but being sexually incapable to do so and needing to demean men they are attracted to but incapable of having by making them sexually sub to another man.

Published novels, particularly sci-fi/fantasy are in such dire straights that they’re routinely demolished by isekai litrpg and Xianxia. Just imagine getting a gig due to nepotism, putting the right amount of diversity in your book to get it published, having a major advertising push, maybe even a bribed Hugo award or similar, then releasing it to get mogged by a web novel about a farmer and his king fu chicken

It's weird reading fanfiction of real people (even actors in a TV show) so the only ones I read are on cartoons, anime, Dark Souls or Touhou. It can be a lot of fun when they make the story gritty and brazenly edgy, like this one on A Certain Scientific Railgun called "Fall into the Depths" is probably my favorite fanfic ever, I've read it 5 times.

Self insert fanfics can be fun in some scenarios. One time I read a Kamen Rider x Re-Creators self insert fic, and it was all about a fanfic author gaining superpowers, and it was all about him finding out that being a superhero is actually pretty scary and traumatizing.
Essentially, if the self-insert is written like an actual character rather than wish fulfillment for the author, then its cool

Yes, actually, mostly with anime but I did it for a few movies, namely "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane" which has a somewhat ambiguous ending and I really wanted more the dynamic between the main characters, unfortunetly there is only a single fic and it wasn't a particularly well written one. I also read a couple fics for stuff like Ginger Snaps and Jennifer's Body, which a couple were better, but those were more rewrites and side-stories than continuations.

I spent six months translating a Chinese author's 300k word long novel into English, it was the best I could do for his rigorous effort and dedication to an amazing work of philosophy when I was the only reader. It's derivative of Touhou with his unique twist on a modern world. Takes much inspiration from literature, poetry, comics, video games, and cinema. For example, the relationship of Reimu and Marisa is based on Comedian and Manhattan from Watchmen, but it takes the most after Russian realist literature and existentialism. The latter is always written either by people with 0 self awareness which allows them to fully commit to a stupid premise or people who know exactly what they are writing and are able to walk the knife edge to create absurdist litkino where you find yourself 10 chapters fully invested in story with a dramatis personae that looks like a fortnight character lineup.
