I've seen a bit of it, and it's actually quite charming. Miss Clavel is also an absolute sweetheart.
I always remembered her as being an orphan, but when by chance I re-read the book, it revealed she's actually just at a boarding school and is even probably from a fairly wealthy family.

In the very first story, the one about her getting apendicitis, when she's recovering in the hospital it mentions the "dollhouse from papa" which makes the other girls jealous and is part of why they all absurdly wish they had apendicitis at the end of the story.
I think the reason for this is because of the cartoon going "In an old HOUSE in Paris that was covered in vines". It feels weird to call a boarding school a house, so I kinda default to thinking it's an orphanage.
I think the movie made her into one but I've never thought that otherwise, maybe because my mom told me how she went to a boarding school just like Madeline. If she was an orphan in the show this might be my first experience with headcanon now that I think about it. I don't see what could be gained from doing that in an episodic show.

You know, it’s the weirdest thing.
When I was a young kid on the internet, maybe 12, I remember finding a blog on tumblr from a suicidal tumblrina. I was a pretty sheltered kid, so it really freaked me out at the time. She was probably just being dramatic, you know how high school girls can be, but it was a wellspring of distress for me. This girl who I’d never seen and was nowhere near was gonna do something drastic maybe, and only I knew, and there was nothing I could do. That’s how I assessed the situation, that’s how it felt to me. A secret struggle.
And this one time, she reblogged a gif set of Madeline and added the comment “I hope no matter how old I get, I never forget Madeline.” And I did love Madeline as a kid, and that quote just stuck with me a lot.
Does it mean anything? Not really, but it’s very sweet. And it felt like a peaceful little island in a dark raging sea.
That blog has long been deleted. Still, I cannot see a Madeline anything, book or movie or cartoon, and not immediately think “I hope no matter how old I get, I never forget Madeline.” Its like a zen koan or a haiku to me. Sorry for the blog post. Looking back as an adult, I am certain that that girl was alright. She’s probably fine, she probably just moved on and grew out of tumblr like everyone else did. But it put me in this depressed mood as a child, and now I’m a depressed adult, not only because of that blog, but it made an impact on me. And I feel a bit lighter now, after writing all this
Yes, and I remember enjoying quite a lot. Kinda wish reboots weren't so overdone because I really wish we had an proper modern take on the character, at same time I can see they ruining the show completely so I'm kinda glad is kinda forgotten in a way.
That's a nice story actually. I know people here hate this sort of interpersonal takes on cartoons but is interesting to hear how it connects with people own story and emotions. I never seen madeline as an melancholic show but from your perspective it must have this sad beauty to it, I'm almost jealous in a way, I don't have a lot of those left, or I ruined by being a disgusting human being or I become to jaded to enjoyed as I did before.
