Mad scientist works way better. There's a reason why that version was chosen for All Star.

I always hate that the Shazam franchise has been downplayed so much in the DCU that Doctor Sivana never comes up in these "smartest man" arguments, specially when one could argue he's had better feats of intelligence than Lex, the supposed smartest man on Earth.
My headcanon is that he purposely avoids being ranked at all to avoid unwanted attention to his crimes, he may be blinded by his ego when fighting his respective flying brick like Lex, but he's smart enough to not let the world know how smart he truly is considering the shit he does.

I think the same way. It's best to think these discussions on "who the smartest man in the DCU" as a competition for second. Sivana is so far ahead he'd make Reeds, Doom, and Pym's heads spin.

The whole concept of ranking "intelligence" is pretty nebulous anyway when all these supposed super geniuses keep losing over and over.

I like Lex and Sivana broing it up, even if pic related isn't actually that? Is it actually that?

Lex Luthor should be a man with a lot of institutional power. he's a man you fear not because he can injure you but because he can ruin your life. if Superman is the ideal of using power to help others, Lex Luthor represents the fear that the people in charge of the world don't have your best interests at heart.

    Both at the same time

Everyone ITT who says both is based. One of the best moments in Superman TAS is when Braniac has Luthor in a basement and forces him to build a new body by himself. Luthor basically has to recall the simple shit like turning a screw.

I also had a soft spot for Smallville Lex. He was definetly more of a billionaire soft boy in the first seasons but then he would do something like clone himself or force Lana to have a baby without actually doing it the normal way

      Anonymous

Yeah, I love billionaire Lex but I literally can't imagine him not being a genius of his own. Even in the immediate Post-Crisis he built his company starting with his own inventions.

If Lex is still running around as a businessman past like year 5 for Supes that means he failed as a hero. Lex should devolve to mad scientist by the end of Clark's first to second year as Superman.

    >becomes super rich
    >becomes president
    >goes back to being super villain full time (while still running some businesses)
there...all of Lex's history all together.

what about the part where he gets kryptonite cancer and has to clone himself and pretend to be his own Cinemaphileter, less balder, scottish cousin while fricking supergirl? Huh? Where's that bit of history?

Where does Lexor fit in? I'd imagine he gets bored of the business at some point or finally gets outed for his crimes.

        damn...you're right
        >becomes fat science criminal
        >gets into shape
        >becomes king of Lexor
        >Lexor blows up
        >THEN he "reforms" and starts a business
in my head he a) saves Metropolis during crisis of infinite earths so everyone likes him or b) he "proves" that the Chemical Fire that caused his baldness actually turned him evil and he says he found a cure (hence why some of his hair grows back after Crisis of Infinite Earths)

as far the "kryptonite cancer" clone story...it doesn't seem to ever come up so I guess you can say it happened but no one really remembers it

Both but what I dont like is them showing that Luthor would totally make the world a better place if it wasnt for the hereos stopping him. Its already annoying and gay seeing Doctor Doom be retconned into this perfect character who would legit just make the world perfect if the hereos didnt exist.

What was the comic where Luthor becomes a god and essentially gives it up so he can keep fricking with Superman? I liked that. And it's funny because Emporer Joker did the same and I hated it.

Businessman. Being a problem Superman can't simply punch is better at showing Superman's range, and it's good use of Lois and Clark as reporters exposing corruption.
Toy Man is already a mad scientist
Prankster is already a mad scientist
Brainiac is already a mad scientist
They can provide all the giant robots Superman can punch

Why would Luthor participate in a society that glorifies the man he hates?

That's my main problem with business Luthor. Running a corporation basically makes him subservient to society, even if he's just exploiting it. He needs to obey their laws, court their acceptance, and earn their money. That, by extension, also makes him subservient to Superman, since he can't directly strike out at him without endangering his position in society.

Dependence on such a society seems like anathema for the character. He would rather be a criminal.

A combination of both. In the Superman 2000 pitch, Luthor is described as classic evil mad scientist who puts on a facade of a "simple" business man. I like this one because it mirrors the Clark Kent/Superman thing, where they are both these larger-than-life beings who pretend to be normal humans. This version of the character only exists in the proposal, which is a shame because i really like it

Lex as some evil guy that is just kind of an butthole that makes robots is boring, and not really well thought out. He works as the most powerful man in Metropolis who can bankroll giant robots and never be connected to any crimes so no Superman dropping him off in a prison yard.

How did Lex become the main nemesis in the 70s anyway? How bland were Superman's villains that the normal guy with no theme or gimmick became the top villain?

Mad scientist secretly legitimate business man upfront. Ideally he's someone who is behind the scenes until confronting superman who outs him as a super villain, otherwise he'd go without being apprehended until Superman bursts his bubble.

Lex being one of the best of humanity physically, businesswise, mentally, etc. as a mirror to superman is always the best take. He should start out as a legitimate if cutthroat businessman who grows bored of it and sees his conflict with Superman as a higher calling.

  28. 6 months ago
    Anonymous

Make him a legitimate business man. That way, he can openly mock Superman and Supes can't do shit without having the whole planet turn against him. Plus, he can freely do whatever dark underground bullshit he wants, while blaming it on terrorists or robots and clones which "somebody else" clearly made. I mean, the friendly CEO of Luthorburgers and Luthormart certainly isn't the one smashing cities with giant robots, that would be silly!

bump. I started reading Its Superman! and that version of Lex is particularly interesting because his roots are similar to Clark's (minus the whole exploding planet thing). But he doesn't have the support of his parents and has to kill and steal his way to the top. I do miss the mad scientist angle a little.
