Alive, but offing Pa is acceptable if it's done well.
    >Superman 1
    >Smallville
    >That Brainiac comic Geoff Johns did
    These all pulled it off

      >Smallville

Eh . . . I really would've rather had Pa Kent around more than the dogshit Lana writing we got.

Smallville's payoff was great but the chain of events was so moronic. The show in a nutshell.

I think the Superman and Lois show did it okay.
Pa is alive when Clark becomes Superman. After marriage to Lois, Pa dies. Clark’s son, Jon, is named after him.
Then right before Jon discovers his powers, Ma Kent dies.

      Yeah, essentially something like this.
Where they play a role in aspects of his beginning as a hero but they can't live forever, but he'll always hold them in his heart.
But it has to be well-written, none of that Man of Steel 'you have to let me die to hide your powers, even though you've already shown them to everyone moments ago.'

Dead. It makes Clark more alienated from the world and gives him no one immediate to use as a shoulder to cry on. That is until he meets Lois and the JL. Finally giving earth's greatest hero the happy ending he deserves.

Alive. Superman is a hero I always like to make me feel good when I read him/see him. The idea of a traditional Kansas family supporting their son and loving him and his superhero friends, as well as his city friends/wife is very heartwarming. There truly is nothing like coming back home to mom's cooking or having your old dad still teach you things about "being the man of the house", even as you're in your 30s.

When have they both ever been dead at the same time?

      >When have they both ever been dead at the same time?
pre-crisis both of them were dead by the time Clark became Superman since on both Earth 1 & 2 they were already in their 50's or 60's when they adopted Clark as a baby, post-crisis made them a lot younger, then the New 52 continuity had them both dead the whole time till the ending of Doomsday Clock had Doctor Manhattan alter the timeline so they'd be alive again

Currently they are both. The main boom doesn't dwell on it since it was a Bendis thing that he did just to reintroduce Superboy. Idk what Geoff was thinking reconning his own Brainiac story

They should only be dead in an era when Superman truly matures, and peacefully.

Jonathan Kent raising Clark and dying around the time he comes of age is an important part of Clark's character development. Martha should be alive at that time. Killing her then is stupid, killing her later achieves nothing but Bendis edgelord shit.

Superman doesn't need an Uncle Ben moment. His heroism was never born out of personal tragedy.
Killing one of his parents later, AFTER he's already a big time hero but hasn't experience any major defeats yet, can serve as a lesson to him that even he can't save everyone. But there are other ways he could learn that without having to sacrifice a parent or two.
The Kents, alive, are a great tool for making Superman more human and relatable. Scenes where he goes to his parents for advice, emotional support or simply to see them are often kino. A major part of Superman's charm is that he's this incredible being but still values the same simple things normal people value.

Killing Jonathan Kent by way of heart attack serves to show Clark that even with all his powers, he can’t save everyone. It shows that he’s not a god, but just a man like any other.

      >His heroism was never born out of personal tragedy.

The Kents surviving into his adulthood is a post-Donner phenomenon. The work of John Byrne I believe, and he was cribbing from Donner who only killed off Jonathan instead of both Jonathan and Martha as had previously always been the case.

The Kents being relevant at all is a post-Donner phenomenon. Before that they were glorified plot devices, like how Alfred being Bruce's father figure is also recent.

depends how far along the timeline it is, they shouldn't be around forever but having them around until Clark is in his 40's and Kon is all grown up is a good idea from a writing standpoint.

Thoughts on Brendan Fraser possibly playing Jonathan in Legacy?

You got the dad mixed up. Jonathan just needs to be a really old dude who can seem fatherly or just not in the film at all. Fraser looks decently enough like Cornballs to pass as a relative. He'd be a better fit for Jor El.
