Do you think the villagers would be ok with him, knowing most of their men died on the battlefield but not him ?

Also since he's a samurai, shouldn't he commit seppuku ? He lost the battle.

reminder that the plural of "samurai" is also "samurai" and the title is referring to the last samurai that tom cruise finds a connection with, and that anyone who called this movie a white savior cliche is ironically being a racist because they misunderstood the boxart showing toms face and the words "the last samurai" below it

      Anonymous

It's perfectly understandable how you would mistake it for Tom Cruise being the Last Samurai from the box art. He's on the poster and the title is above it. How would you make another assumption from seeing the poster? It's how it was marketed to sell the most tickets.

Daniel Day Lewis wasn't the last of the Mohicans either. What are you going to do? Put some old drunk with a face like shrivelled up parchment on your poster?

But I can see how it is taken as a sign of white dominant culture. It's just where the money is and what sells tickets. You can see fill that in however you want to. It's the poster that will sell most tickets.

Seppuku wasn't a known term before the internet and weebs. When Japs killed themselves with a short sword, which was a foreign concept as it was, it was labeled as 'harakiri'. That was the popular term. 'Seppuku' was a more obscure term that wasn't known before the internet.

I saw that scene as Cruise simply being stubborn and defiant to his captures, as prisoners of war tend to be, and the Japs seeing how dangerous this new modern threat is, as he does not simply roll over and die when he is defeated like how they usually do.

    The last samurai is:

    a)Tom Cruise
    b)Katsumoto
    c)The Emperor
    d)The samurai in the village
    e)The entire village

For me, personally, I think the emperor was the last samurai when Cruise handed him the sword. Doesn't matter if it can be plural. It was supposed to be a spiritual thing and a way of life. When Cruise handed the Emperor the sword, he turned him into the last samurai. Ensuring their way of life and philosophy would not die.

in the book he returns to pick up his new wife and his wife's son and takes them back to live in the city he then spends his days boinking her and teaching the young emperor about Katsumoto and his best friend (in the book) Ujio who he regarded as the strongest Samurai.
