He barely did anything before Cleveland Show. Fricking Adam West had more focus episodes than Cleveland.

A lot of people panned The Cleveland Show as just an excuse for Family Guy writers to make black jokes. But I watched the show, and I don't remember there be any jokes at all.

Phase both out, make Cleveland the straight man to Peter, occasionally do episodes about him and his family.

Cleveland WAS the straight man before he left. Then they oddly gave that role to Quagmire. When he came back they made him into a dimwit, undoing all the character development he got in The Cleveland Show.

          >When he came back they made him into a dimwit, undoing all the character development he got in The Cleveland Show.
Wasn't it said Cleveland Show that made him a dimwit? I remember there being complaints even back when the spin-off was still airing that they'd flanderized a character once known for being "the boring one" as soon as he got the spotlight. This couldn't have started once he returned to Family Guy.

            Anonymous

The way I saw it, he was happy with his new life and family, but was blissfully naive on the responsibilities that came with it. He was selfish a few times but usually came around to his own realization that it wasn't right and then tried to fix it. That's something Peter would rarely do.

              Anonymous

That's a good way of looking at it. Making Cleveland the star of his own show was gonna require having to portray him in ways previously impossible when his role was still limited to "the mild-mannered black guy." Giving him those flaws but still having him learn from them in ways Peter (and sometimes Stan) couldn't still felt right for the character. Is there really a noticeable difference with how FG Cleveland is written pre- and post-Cleveland Show?

                Anonymous

The pilot sort of addresses this with Cleveland saying the only reason he ever came off as boring was because his friends never really care to ask his thoughts or what he has going on in life.
Though even after this, even with his zanier, more outspoken personality, the show still made jokes about Cleveland being a really white bread guy.

                >Is there really a noticeable difference with how FG Cleveland is written pre- and post-Cleveland Show?
Cleveland-Show and Post Cleveland-Show Cleveland are both a lot more zany than he was back during family guy. Not sure about post-CS, but in the Cleveland Show he was more like a diet modern Family Guy Peter. Not as much of an butthole and more often than not he's the straight man or placed in the middle of the show's wackiness, but he still acts like a moron.

Why do people STILL think Seth has anything to do with FG beyond coming in to do the voice acting and then fricking off to work on his mediocre Star Trek ripoff? He hasn't written for it in over a decade. His name is in the credits and he does the voices, but that's about the extent of his involvement.

No your not wrong, despite that being common knowledge people still think he wrote every epsiode

Out of all the adult cartoon titans, Matt Groening has the fewest contributions when it comes to his shows (ignoring Dishitchantment). I would complain that he got lucky and doesn't deserve his fame and wealth, but at the end of the day, Simpsons and Futurama really wouldn't have happened without his Life in Hell comics attracting big TV executives and informing the art and writing style.

Very true. We did happen to get some quality and earnest stuff with golden age Simpsons and Futurama. I know he did fart out the Simpsons and struck gold but he did give a lot of development to Futurama along with David Coen and still did/does writting for Futurama even though those show are a blessing of top notch writting room

                Anonymous

I remember Groening doing a podcast for Futurama during its Comedy Central run, but was he actually noticeably more involved with that show compared to Simpsons? I know he co-wrote the pilot and helped design the main characters, but it seems like it's more Cohen's baby overall.

It was definitly a writer's room effort, you've Ken Keeler off the top of my head, I can't be arsed Googling more, but at the same time, Greoning was very involed in the concept, way more than the Simpsons, like there are rough draghs of all the characters and concepts for Futurama but it did become a writer's baby once it was on the air

it's not like sex jokes end at rape. they could still tell sex jokes they just choose not to. he used to be a cool guy that just happened to have a lot of sex. they could easily go back to normal with quagmire just after like him being a whiney dick never happened

I wish they'd grow a fricking pair and stop pearl clutching over making "insensitive" or "offensive" jokes. Quagmire was the most hilarious character on the show until they dropped the pervert angle and just turned him into a grumpy old dude who likes cats and has a troony for a father.

I'd say phase out all three of them and give Peter new friends

Even that mainly happened to humble Brian again. They played it up because it's funny when Brian eats shit.

About the only slightly funny episodes in modern FG are the episodes where Brian gets fricked over, humiliated, or brutally injured. He is the definition of insufferable.

honestly I'd rather they shift Brian back to his original Seasons 1-3 era personality, though that could be said for most of the show's cast aside from Stewie(honestly now this has me picturing them taking advantage of the fact Stewie has a Time Machine and just do a literal reset of the show for everyone besides him)

that's what I think, family guy is kinda starving for new characters. you'd think the brown family would be good additions to the cast but Donna is the only one that talks and even then she barely hangs out with Lois and Bonnie. Cleveland is worse there have been more quagmire and peter episodes than Cleveland and peter episodes, they don't know what to do with Cleveland
