I still feel like we haven't heard the true story of what really went on behind the scenes in S1. Must have been really bad though (not just some professional disagreement about treatment of extras/a burning sofa stunt)

from all the accusations of sexual misconduct on set that have come out since, I get the feeling RTD ran the production like a party, very loose about sex etc. just typical showbiz degeneracy yknow.

Eccleston is extremely whingy. If you watch any interview with him he always goes off on a tangent about being working class.

Pretty much this. I doubt anything actually illegal happened, I just bet it was very casual and "unprofessional" like a uni flat kind of vibe. Eccles is quite a principled and serious kind of person so it probably didn't gel with him

        Anonymous

As much as I loved Eccleston as the Doctor, him leaving after 1 season made that season a pure kino way to introduce someone to Doctor Who. You get a new Doctor, new companion, a self-contained story arc, and introduced to regeneration all in one season.

I also don't quite mind Eccleston not being in that special because it allows the whole idea of Nine having just freshly regenerated at the start of his season. What actually sucked about the War Doctor was not allowing McGann to be in the special. Eight should have been the Doctor who went to war and then he should have regenerated into Nine after it was all done.

Doctor Who remains under BBC ownership. They just negotiated a deal to co-produce, they don't have ownership rights. Not that BBC is much better anyway.

I just got burnt out on streaming services. I was all for it back when there was only Netflix and Prime Video, and I even stopped pirating because streaming was so convenient and cost-effective. Then there was suddenly a dozen different streaming services that all had different stuff and licenses expired and moved shows and movies from one service to another. At that point I decided to not sign up for any new ones. Then Netflix betrayed me by canceling Dark Crystal so I dropped them, then more recently Amazon put ads on Prime so I dropped my Prime sub, too. Now I'm back to full piracy because FRICK the streaming bullshit.

                >But you can just sign up free trials or for one month and cancel.
Yeah, not worth the hassle. The promise of streaming was efficiency and convenience, and those promises are beyond broken at this point.

RTD isn't bad for a poofter. He puts in plenty of "Something for the Dads" fansevice every episode, like Ruby getting butakked by "snot" tentacle porn music staves and her grabbing a solid sized and shaped item made of flesh for a large part of this episode (was it's size and shape written in Moffat's script? Don't think so).

He knows that if he wants to get away with his gay stuff he needs to put in plenty for straight men to fap over.

they do seem to really get along well. I think even though they have different artistic visions, their shared bond as showrunner and tv exec trumps that. like, to them it doesn't really matter *what* is being put on tv, it just matters that there is something being put on tv. I think moffat has the same attitude towards chibnall, when he's asked about chibnall he doesn't really talk about the contents of his show, but says stuff like "he's retooled it as a sunday night family show with a bigger cast and different tone instead of a saturday night blockbuster". you have to remember these guys are tv execs as much if not more as they are creatives, and despite their conflicting artistic visions, they all have to think about things like the time slot, audience, ratings etc

That's a point actually - The Doctor says to Ruby "This is your first time on a different planet" - but she's already been in space and saw outside the station. It's not concrete, but I think it gives further credit to the episodes having been shifted around theory.

I imagine we'll hear some behind the scenes details when the season's over. Devil's Chord generally feels like something that'd used to be either a mid-season episode, or an episode right before the two-parter finale in previous seasons.
Between all the hammering home the big bad, the Doctor's fear of the Pantheon, etc etc. Feels far too early to pop that kinda script traditionally compared to older seasons.

He has had animal companions. Technically Frobisher, being a shapeshifter, he could be anything he wanted (famously he was a supermarket check out for some years) but spent most of his time with the Doctor as a peguin.

K9 was a robot dog, which sort of counts, but Karvanista is more like an actual dog, even though a Lupari and was the Fugative Doctor's companion.

          Affirmative.

I met his voice actor at a comic convention and we chatted for ages, such a nice person. He even did the voice a few times unlimited at moments when it would be funny. I'm almost certain Ruby is the Doctor's daughter and Susan's mother. The "NEXT OF KIN... NEXT OF KIN..." moment almost feels designed to give goosebumps when its eventually revealed Ruby's next of kin is standing right there on the landmine and has been travelling in the TARDIS with her the whole time. Plus the dad sub-theme of the episode. The woman at the church will turn out to be Thirteen (played by a body double since Jodie was pregnant / had just given birth when they filmed all this). Another prediction, either Susan Twist or Anita Dobson will be revealed to be the Doctor's mother. The current theme of the show is orphan's we know that Ruby's parentage is going to be resolved, probably in the finale, would make thematic sense to resolve the Doctor's too.

Oh I almost forgot. The funniest thing in the video commentary. Whenever Moffat references Smith or Capaldi, RTD almost always instantly flips it straight back to Ncuti. He looks visibly uncomfortable with other doctors being mentioned.

There is a "honey" and a "gyal" in there so unless Russell told Ncuti to ad-lib and zest it all up Moffat definitely made some effort to fit it to Ncuti but there are moments and dialogue that are very Matt Smith.

He went full troon literally years ago.
I was about to ask "have you not been paying attention?" but frick, I wish I hadn't. I was never much of a fan of his, I liked his review of that terrible Netflix sci-fi, but yeah watching him troon out just to try (emphasis on try) to look like a woman he has said he finds attractive... it's just sad.

There ought to be more barriers on this shit. I actually do believe a small number of people can develop brain structures similar to the opposite sex. There's no reason it couldn't be possible since all fetuses start off as neither male nor female and the body develops in stages. Any chemical imbalance there could clearly make things go wrong without their genetics being affected.
But its also obvious that outcasts, autists, people with depression see hopping to another identity as an experiment to improve their lives. And in a culture that calls you brave and gives you protected status for trooning out, it's leading a lot of people to have gender identity issues when there is nothing wrong with them

                What do you think about

The landmine having muh sensors and shit was such a badly contrived plot device, especially with how inconsistently it all worked. Why not just make it a typical, "If I shift my weight too much it goes off," situation? Nothing would have changed except making the stakes more believable, you could even still have the adrenaline/heartrate stuff just with the explanation that too much excitement will make him shaky and more likely to move too much. What's the point of adding layers of complexity beyond that which just end up making the whole thing feel inconsistent and arbitrary throughout? Does Moffat just think you HAVE to have technobabble nonsense for every little thing just because it's a sci-fi show?

                ?
I liked the episode overall and appreciated the change of pace with a more serious tone, but Moffat always seems to go a step too far in places and makes things come off as unnecessarily tryhard. It rubs me the wrong way and brings down what could have been an excellent episode to something less than it should be.

Moffat is a hack writer and always has been. Its not exactly a hot take to say that he was best at one-off episodes. Every concept he revisited like weeping angels or clockwork droids needlessly expanded on the lore and made completely unnecessary changes to the established concept because he felt like he needed something fresh.

Case in point, the Smith era episode where the weeping angel concept was inverted. Where all the angels were "instinctively" compelled to remain still so long as they thought you could see them, and Amy couldn't open her eyes.
In the original episode it was heavily implied it was a quantum effect. That observing them had a physical impact on them. If they could fricking move when they wanted to and only "instinctively" freeze what's to stop them from overcoming the instinct and moving when you're looking at them? Nothing. Not only does it fly in the face of what we already, it also made the angels less cool because it makes them stupider. They don't freeze as an evolutionary adaptation, they freeze because they're fricking stupid. Like those goats that tense up and fall over if you surprise them

Yeah, true, but he used to have some measure of restraint. I feel like there was a Moffat in the past who would have just written that if the Doctor shifts his weight too much on the landmine it blows him up, but current Moffat is so far up his own ass he just has to over-complicate everything for no reason to the point that it sucks the tension out of the episode.

      >BBC why are you like this?

If a main presenter of character is wearing a branded jacket then technically it can be seen as advertising or endorsing a product. The rules for broadcast in the US are strict on this so what might not be seen as after in the UK would be seen as that in the USA and typically for that sort of exposure or product placement some financial agreement would have been negotiated. So it's blurred not so much because it's looks bad to have product placement (which would be a British approach) but because some American executive would kick off at Disney that North Face got free product placement and Nike or whoever has to pay for their in She Hulk. It's cheaper and less bother to just make one version of a show, especially a fairly low budget extra like Unleashed, that should be fine for all broadcasters than to faff about wasting money on blurring logos in one version and not another.

I live in a semi rural area and the woods near my house are managed. I once tripped on dph as a teen and had a horrible fricking experience where I saw stick figure men chasing me like african endurance hunters and I ended up near a massive abandoned dye factory, went inside to hide and there were junkies in it who looked to me like they were covered in insects and had no eyes. I freaked the frick out and they just sat around laughing at me. I ran away and hid in some old office room for hours panicking and kept reading and re reading some poster on the floor for what in retrospect was likely 3 hours. I’d come down enough to realise how tired and miserable I was and stepped out, and realised they were just people doing heroin. I apologised for freaking out but they were still sort of leaping out at me visually, i’m not sure how to describe it, like their outline was shimmering and would occasionally fly into my face and loom at me, all their faces were broken up and sad but they were friendly so I left. That was like 4:30 am and it was summer so getting bright, walked home and curled into bed then freaked out again later because I saw a massive centipede on the floor. No idea how my parents didn’t notice what I did because I was out all night and must have been loud. Anyway, there were constantly people in the woods all around it. I kept hearing guitar concert noises in my fan and people muttering and whispering in the next room

I didn't care for any of the side characters. The only part that worked was Ruby trying to help the Doctor with the mine. It didn't help she got unconcious 1/3 of the episode.

She has a nipple ring in her left tit by the looks of it. This disappoints me.

Imagine the mess if she ever breastfeeds. There would be milk spraying everywhere in the room like when you shake up a bottle of pop and open it. She would be crying and trying to cover her embarrassment as her baby goes hungry and her breast milk shoots out of the multiple holes when she squeezes her breasts to feed it. The

"Noooo, my little babbi." She would cry out as her milk painted the walls and she realised the horrors she had wrought by mutilating her nipples in an act of childish rebellion.

Bet she has a tattoo too. Foolish child.

Maybe I'm just reading into it but anyone else found it creepy how the "dad AI" was treated as if it were actually the guy? Like, the girl doesn't really mourn her dad for long.. she just acts like the AI is the same as her dad. Even if that's just because she's used to that tech or whatever.. the Doctor himself also kind of did this, acting like the AI was some remnant of him and the "our father who art in heaven part".. it just gave me the ick.

      Anonymous

      >Like, the girl doesn't really mourn her dad for long
I would assume that she's using it as a coping mechanism and denying the fact that her father died, but I doubt the writers thought that far.

      Anonymous

For some reason RTD can't decide between hating AI or loving AI
Years and Years literally had an ending where one of the main characters died and was replaced by an AI interface and the rest of the family were acting like she was still alive and immortal now
      >it was a Moffat episode
Yeah but this is definitely an Daviesism seeping through

  58. 4 weeks ago

God, this episode was so shitty. The idea of having the Doctor spend all of it on a landmine was good, but the execution was a travesty.
    >dumb girl who talks like an adult and gets over her father's death in a couple of minutes
    >AI module that somehow goes against its programming through the "power of love" and hacks the whole system (somehow none of the previous force ghosts managed to do this)
    >random jabs at religion
    >forced romance subplot that only exists to make the viewer feel as good as possible for one moment, then as shitty as possible for the next after the pajeet's love interest is killed
    >characters are written to be mongoloid morons who won't sit down and ask for a second why they're shooting at dirt, just to force a mystery/scenario
    >everybody is hectic and shouting against each other constantly

It wasn't even jabs at religion, but at faith as a concept. With the message being to.. give in and surrender. What kind of message is that..?

        Anonymous

Having the level of blind faith where you can get manipulated into shooting at mud is a pretty objectively bad thing

          Anonymous

Right, but we're talking about the messaging here. Moff wrote the characters with faith in a cause to be moronicly blind in faith to the point of never questioning.. anything whatsoever and made them religious to reinforce this idea that having faith in something is a bad thing. It's.. extremely nihilistic and cynical.

I think his intent was as more of a criticism of how modern social media algorithms can manipulate people into basically anything and actively promote bullshit for the sake of higher profits.

        Anonymous

yeah I thought that messaging was muddled too. I feel like it would've worked better as a question of belief vs faith, and asking them to let go of their ingrained beliefs and to trust faith instead. but idk if Moffat has the nuance for that. I like him better writing character drama than social critique. the "thoughts & prayers" thing was a little heavy handed instead.

        Anonymous

        >It wasn't even jabs at religion
I thought it was since they specifically called the dudes Anglican.
I also thought the "Thoughts and Prayers" thing mocking people who spam it on social media when bad things happen was pretty funny at first, until it turned out to not be a one-time thing and they were actually dragging it out and beating a dead horse.

She had more of a personality in the other few episodes but Moffat can only pine over Clara.

I'm not sure I'd say she had a personality in the first two episodes. It was a bit more like "stock companion" with a list of attributes tacked on. She's young, she's LGBT, and she loves music. That's about it. She did have more personality in The Church on Ruby Road, but so did 15. Overall I feel like this series so far has been failing to live up to the glimpse of these characters we got in the Christmas special, there was a dynamic there we haven't seen since. Ncuti felt chill and authoritative and Ruby deeply caring and inquisitive, neither has been like that these past few episodes.

I hate that it's focusing so hard on whatever her special mystery time bullshit is. She felt like an actual person in the Christmas special but all they've done with her since is make the same mistake they made with Clara.

        >I hate that it's focusing so hard on whatever her special mystery time bullshit is.
It's very shitty that its so blatantly forced into every episode. I was actually curious about the mystery at the end of the Christmas special, now I'm very tired of it. Idk if they're doing it like this because they only have 8 episodes or if RTD's fully lost it, could be both.

What indication is in any of those episodes that she is LGBT? Have we seen one single fact at all to backup her sexuality?

They could've just shown something harmful in the mud, like a natural phenomenon killing people that is mistaken for an evil entity. I feel like this would've given the episode more sense.
Just like with the space babies episode, it felt like they were trying to establish a backstory, but didn't think it through and expand it enough.

Also why would you hate RTD when he gives us moments like this:

      >two reasons why the current poof showrunner is no fun

RTD isn't bad for a poofter. He puts in plenty of "Something for the Dads" fansevice every episode, like Ruby getting butakked by "snot" tentacle porn music staves and her grabbing a solid sized and shaped item made of flesh for a large part of this episode (was it's size and shape written in Moffat's script? Don't think so).

He knows that if he wants to get away with his gay stuff he needs to put in plenty for straight men to fap over.

As for how much he used it, it's been in both Episode 1 and 2, where in Episode 1 he basically just stuck it in a usb port for most of it, and in Episode 2 I think he only successfully used it to use it's sonic waves to cancel out sound.

Timeless Child, and Time Lord as that's where they nicked it from, regeneration works of there is something there to regenerate. If a body is literally atomized and scattered to the 4 winds then it's a bit of a stretch to think you could regenerate that.

Think about it, in the Time War the Daleks were somehow able to wipe out multiple Time Lords despite them being able to regenerate and probably the limits being turned off, that's one method you can use.

While the Doctor has unlimited regeneration now, since Smith's last episode where the timeless removed the regeneration limit they put on him when they mind wiped the Fugative and he became the first Doctor, he obviously wouldn't want to test it too much outside of what he knew were the rules for Time Lords in how it works.

It might have worked or it might not, but as well as running that risk Ruby and most of the people on the planet would die so it's not worth the risk of he can avoid it.
