Does ANYBODY have any enthusiasm for DickBabs?

He took a major downgrade considering he was fricking a literal alien space princess, and she has better chemistry with the bug, who literally tries to kill her every time they meet. Why are they even together?

You'd think with the popularity of the TT cartoon, not to mention Go, DC'd be more inclined towards Dick and Kory. I mean, there's a whole legion of casuals that literally can't imagine Dick and Kory having any other love interests.

When DC is run by Bat editorial autist, it's impossible for them to think about anything other than the Bat family.

        Anonymous

This is actually true to an extent. The entire reason the Dick/Starfire wedding didn't happen was because the Batman editorial demanded Nightwing be pulled from the book so he could exclusively appear in Batbooks, then did the whole "Batman is just an urban myth" thing so kept vetoing later attempts to use Dick (and Tim) in subsequent Titans books in the '90s.

They(the show runners) really should had not underestimated the impact raven and beast boy had in the long run compared to robin and starfire because they thought robin was going to be enough to captivate fans as a main lead. Raven honestly became the shows most populat character next to BB because robin and starfire never had the personality to connect to their audience like the former.

Raven and Beast boy got entire plot arcs dedicated to them though. Its a cast of 5, it was always going to be a balancing act. And so much of what makes Raven popular is headcanon and fanart anyway.

DickBabs is basically a thing that morons like because Dick was Robin and Babs was Batgirl so it "makes sense", even though them having any romantic inclinations is mostly a modern thing that came well after Teen Titans.

DickBabs and DicKory is basically like the Spider Marriage. They know that most fans generally like and prefer Kory as his love interest but don't want to bring it back because they know the only end result of that is marriage which they don't want to do. It just has an added dose of shipping autism by people who are in love with Babs, likely because she was their waifu as a kids and teenagers (like DC's Kitty Pryde), so they self-insert as the cool and handsome Dick Grayson in order to be with their waifu.

                Anonymous

Honestly batgirl doing "oracle stuff" doesn't even sound that appealing. This might not be popular opinion but ignoring the whole legs thing batgirl feels like a giant demotion from oracle. She was literally running her own worldwide spy network and was superhero tech support. Outside of her maybe being a bit too powerful/good, I found that way more appealing as a story foundation than whatever the hell she was doing (usually poorly) as batgirl. I guess the biggest problem is Oracle sort of necessarily puts her largely in team books but I'm not sure that's even a bad thing

                Anonymous

Oracle always felt like a "coccon" stage for me. She's not really her own independant superhero, because she's insanely dependant on everybody else, she can only play a support role in her own team, she's just a mission control with a wheelchair gimmick. And there is nothing stopping Batgirl from having a vast spy network and being an active member there. It would actually be more interesting, IMO.

Yes but it's a hot female character who used to fight and was then put in a desk job. Regardless of her will to persevere making her take up the mantle as Oracle, normalgays who don't read comics but are still listened to b***h about her being turned into a cripple while the boys still go out and have fun. Other female action heroes exist and male heroes who die or get crippled? Doesn't matter. Oracle being decent cripple representation when the woke crowd was calling for such things? Well, the appeal of BatMoth is that underneath the clusterfrick of dominance games and sexualized violence there are two people who genuinely enjoy being in a relationship with each other and kind of use it as an outlet to be normal people. So it stands that Nightwing/Tarantula's appeal is that it's Dick's dirty and violent little secret where he allows himself to be morally compromised under a veneer of superheroics. Remember, Tarantula isn't a villain, she's a fairly corrupt and manipulative anti-hero.

There was never an issue where Tim and Steph outright broke up. When Steph became Robin they stopped talking but it felt more like a quarrel than an outright breakup. Then when she comes back from being dead Tim's dating someone else but not necessarily serious, and they still refer to their crimefighting nights as dates. And even if them hooking up again was sudden in rebirth, it still happened.

They were broken up, but they were stuck in a perpetual will they/won't they for most of that in between times. They were still in each others' orbits, except maybe during the DickBats era? Even when they had other relationships, they kept popping in on each other.

Frick it, I'll come out in defense of them; I just think they're cute. I like that Dick is a bit scatterbrained but sweet and Babs is highstrung and a bit b***hy. Frankly it just works for me. I don't like the Gotham capes intermingling that much with alien elements(yes I know Nightwing is a Kryptonian name;Dick's relationship to Superman is great, but its one of the few I like in that regard.) Starfire's relationship is just bland to me, there's no fun dynamic, just a really loving girl and a bland hero Dick. He can't tease her the same way he does Babs. Plus the first Robin dating the first(non-hyphenated) batgirl just feels right.

This is generally where I am too. I generally like the Batfam best when they're a more contained unit away from the wider DC universe. And I like the relationship that Dick/Babs had during the Dixon run and then in the Rebirth era through now.
But I'm also tired of the endless parade. If it's just going to fizzle in a year, I'd rather let the characters grow in separate ways for a while.

Seriously though, has there ever been a heroine/villain ship that's lasted more than an issue or two? I feel like teasing it happens every now and then, but having it as a recurring element and even an on again off again thing is rare.

For a certain definition of villain, you've got Black cat and Spider-Man. Batman has had Catwoman, Talia, and Nocturna as serious love interests, but both Catwoman and, at the time, Nocturna are thieves and writers nixed the Talia relationship when they moved her solidly into supervillain territory. The main issue with hero/villain relationships is that the moral disparity can't be too great, otherwise you can't really sell the relationship.

Frick it, I'll come out in defense of them; I just think they're cute. I like that Dick is a bit scatterbrained but sweet and Babs is highstrung and a bit b***hy. Plus the first Robin dating the first(non-hyphenated) batgirl just feels right.

The issue is that Dick and Kori's relationship has to be seen in the context of the NTT comics, where his relationship with Kori plays a major role in his character development from Robin into Nightwing.

Yeah, you can't really be fooling around with "Conquer Ze World!" types for too long. An impish rogue who doesn't physically hurt people often is understandable though. You can also do an X-Men style extremely different philosophies thing, but that only lasts until the villain does something beyond the pale.

If you take the "Bruce is always 30" approach most writers joke about, closer to Bruce. At that point she had been a college graduate, had worked in politics for a bit. She was definitely younger but maybe 8 years younger instead of 15.

But everyone in 80's comics were treated like a mature adult one they hit 19 anyway. Look at Dick in the Wolfman Titans comics compared to later stuff. Just a serious, straightlaced man.

whats disturbing about this is that in the 90s its implied dick babs had a history before he returned to Gotham. So that means Babs had a romantic relationship with a teenager when she was an adult. This is why ill never support Dick Babs. Because it paints babs as a groomer. I'm surprised people are not more upset about this ship because they love to scream about Bruce Babs even though each time it happened they were both consenting adults.

Dick's teenage crush and Babs' viewing it as cute in a youthful swagger kind of way only for them to actually get together later in life could have served as a nice foundation for the relationship, but DC was intent on not actually developing the relationship organically but instead constantly inserting retcons that clash with the actual books being published at the time. Suddenly it went to love at first sight for both of them and they always wanted to be with each other because it is a romance more fated than Babs getting stuck in a wheelchair.

A lot of comic book writers (and editors) are hacks and can't conceive of interesting ways to write a superhero with a non-superhero so it's way easier to just pair superheroes together since in addition to (badly written) romance you can have them go on adventures together. Way easier to write Spider-Man and Black Cat flirting while fighting the Tinkerer than it is to come up with interesting stories for MJ that don't involve her being a superhero.

Same general reason they hate marriage, because it's far easier to just write a character with a rotating cast of shallow girlfriends than it is to actually write a meaningful relationship in a book about people shooting lasers at each other. Remember that DC back in the 2000s wanted to end Superman's marriage and Chuck Austen was brought in specifically to do it.

      >I don't understand why anyone would want Dick to be suck in that mess.

Its just disingenuous bullshit from Toon Titans fans who want brand synergy, even though they would never pick up a comic, even when they ere literally making 03 Titans comics.

What? Dick/Kory was always popular. If you want to blame the cartoon for anything, blame it for Beast Boy/Raven which is infinitely worse than even DickBabs and got forced into the comics as well as changing Raven's entire character into an emo teen.

Yes, especially with wish fulfillment characters like Dick and Spidey. Writer comes in, puts them with their preferred girlfriend. Writer leaves, new writer comes in, jettisons the relationship to put them with THEIR favorite girl, etc. Frick, at one point in the 80s you had Peter being shipped with (damn near simultaneously or very consecutively) Deb Whitman, MJ, Felicia, Joy Mercado and Marcy Kane (who later turned out to be an alien and became Jack of Hearts' girlfriend).

Worse in my opinion, what's with the trend of civvie gf/bf characters going "OMG YOU WERE LYING TO ME THE WHOLE TIME!?!" when they find out their love interest is a fricking superhero? I recently started Batman Beyond 2018 and they pull that shit there too. Like how do you not think it's cool or at least worrisome that your love interest is out there kicking ass and saving lives? No shit they will try to keep the ones they care about safe by having a secret identity. You could argue the hero character should have trusted the bf/gf enough to tell them, but that's a grey area depending on how long they've been together or how well they know each other. All the outburst "YOU LIED!!" shit does is make the gf/bf look like a selfish sperg but they're almost never given any sort of comeuppance for it. Invincible is one of the worst offenders especially in the show, but that instance has been discussed plenty, I think.

Timsteph was barely bat related. It's about as wrong as Dick/Helena which is to say not at all. In all fairness, by that point war Games was still a big TPB seller, and most general comic fans knowledge of her probably came from that. And even after that, just look at

When you stop seeing your boyfriend cause you stole their job its a break up. When you put out a hit on your boyfriend to make him a better person its a breakup, when your boyfriend say I'm leaving town and never let me catch you in that spoiler get up again its a break up.

Because NTT Dick is fine for an 80's teambook, but boring as frick for a solo. I get that NTT is a sacred cow for people, but the writing is very stilted and dated. Dick's personality before NTT is being fun, quippy, and cool. Letting adult Dick have some of those Robin era traits isn't a bad thing. If Dick wasn't the cool big brother he wouldn't have the appeal he manages to have now.He shouldn't be an idiot or a wreck like devon Grayson put him on track to be, or overly cute, but there's no problem in letting him be free-wheeling.

well this is false because the cool older brother image is what makes him look like an entire joke. You do know that people think Nightwing is a weak and boring character mostly because of Batfam "older brother" content and not the NTT content. NTT isnt the holy grail some think it is, but Nightwing had a far better reputation as a character than he does now. NTT made Dick a star.

Anon, NTT was in its heyday nearly 40 years ago. The normies online don't think of Dick as the NTT Dick, because they weren't born back then. The Dick everyone talks about is the personality established through BTAS and the Nightwing solo.

          fricking this
It's really really easy to tell who read more Dick or prefers Dick with the batfamily because the batfamilygays think of Dick as a one note sunshine idiot. Dixon fricked the character when he gave Dick's intelligence to justify Tim and Babs. Now there's probably no fixing that because DC can't make a good Titans book to save their life despite the franchise probably being on par with the JL in popularity... if not surpassing it since Titans is still one of the most streamed shows despite being shit.

It's a part of a bigger problem where both characters graduated from being Batman orbiters and had their own characters and settings, and were demoted from that. Oracle isn't an all-encompassing administrator for the superhero community anymore, she's another Bat sidekick. Same with Dick.

I likedRobinStaarfire when I watched Teen Titans but I think Kory just really doesn't fit in most Batseries because she is a tall orange alien who walks around in a bikini most of the time. It would be hard for her to be his wife and then randomly show up in a more serious bat story.

I don't care about Babs when she isn't Oracle.

Like someone else said, the problem is that Dick (and later Babs) had graduated from being Batman characters into characters in their own right with their own lives, worlds, casts, etc. and DC more or less demoted and devolved them back to being Batman's sidekicks. Dick especially kept getting yo-yo'd starting with Batman editorial yanking him out of the TItans around the time of the wedding because they wanted all the Batman characters back in the Batbooks and thought that Kory wouldn't fit there being an alien. Dick got fricked over hard by Bateditor autism.

        Anonymous

Dick getting yanked out of Wolfman's fiefdom was great for him, though. Titans hasn't been any good since the late 80's, the character is way too important to stagnate in book that was running off of sheer momentum by then.

You're talking about franchise that includes multiple evil clowns, a chick who can control plants, 8 different shapeshifters made out of living mud, a guy with a freeze gun who has to live in inside a refrigerator, an immortal Middle Eastern terrorist with an army of ninjas, and a guy who looks like a crocodile.

Was Babs around Bruce's age or younger in the 80s?

If you take the "Bruce is always 30" approach most writers joke about, closer to Bruce. At that point she had been a college graduate, had worked in politics for a bit. She was definitely younger but maybe 8 years younger instead of 15.

But everyone in 80's comics were treated like a mature adult one they hit 19 anyway. Look at Dick in the Wolfman Titans comics compared to later stuff. Just a serious, straightlaced man.

Pre-Flashpoint Babs was canonically 7 years older than Dick (although Batgirl: Year One really messes with the timeline), which put them at roughly 32 and 25 when they hooked up in the 90s. What irritates me about a lot of the Dickbabs pushing is just how much it relies on retcons as Dick was already 18 when Babs debuted and his attraction to her was a pretty one-sided crush.

both have way better ships and only seem to be together for dumbass editorial reasons despite having 0 chemistry. BoP made me love Ted/Babs since they actually have shit in common besides a bat job and bounce off of each other in a good way. Dick could go a bunch of ways but Starfire is probably the best because their personalities and dispositions really work well together regardless of how you feel about the quality of titans comics but from a narrative standpoint she kinda doesn't fit in a nightwing setting without some notable changes.

Overall though it's pretty obvious that DC or capeshit in general just isn't interested in making decent romantic relationships or anything built to last or isn't filled with a bunch of easy and cheap drama

I think part of the problem is that writers and fans are always asking how does Starfire fit into a Nightwing setting but never ask how Nightwing would fit in a Starfire setting (pretty well considering no one has a problem with Dick on the Titans). Also God forbid DC do anything with Dick that isn't diet-coke Batman.

        >never ask how Nightwing would fit in a Starfire
True. But that's asking an A-lister to play fiddle in a C-lister book so I can't blame DC for not going there just to catter to a shipper fanbase. The reverse would just be what we have in current Nightwing, but with Kory instead of Babs being the perfect waifu doing shit offscreen. Still a nothing book for Nightwing in the end.

That's the problem, Kori is good for Dick because of the two characters, but she's the worst thing ever if you want to preserve the sanctity of Gotham as being more grounded and relatable as a setting. Simply put, Kori is too powerful to make most of Gotham's threats stay threatening.

Which is an idiotic notion anyway. You have a metric frickton of Batkids just piled on top of each other in Gotham, with all those Batgirls and Robins stepping on each other's toes, while you can scatter them all over the world so you have different flavours of Batman Inc. Have Babsgirl go to Chicago, so she can have cyberpunky spy adventures, have Red Hood go to Detroit where he becomes a crime boss, Cass can frick off to Hong Kong and Steph can have her family-friendly kiddie adventures in Burnside or something. Then can team up once in a decade in a crossover. Everybody's happy.

A poly relationship that isn't just 4 ugly dudes and a fat chick is less believable than seeing Dick swing around the city like Spider-Man

        Look at this:
Dick and 3 women(Starfire, Barbara, Supergirl)
        Dick and 2 men(Wally, Jon)
Dick and batfamily(3 brothers and Bruce)

I mean everything is here. Dick needs to leave the bat nest and go on a journey.

The only problem with a Dick/Kory/Babs Poly relationship is that Kory and Babs don’t really have a relationship with each other. I’m not even sure we’ve ever seen them directly interact before.

Babs has never been supportive, affectionate or attentive. lol she is literally always very grounded, rigid and un agreeable espeically with Dick or any other female. Ive read most of her stuff and im finding it super hard to see where people get this idea that Babs is motherly/sisterly when she has been portrayed as none of that. The line between canon and fanon has clearly been blurred.

This. Taylor's babs not even a character. She's a plot tool and a waifu. Solving the issue thanks to her mad computer skills while being 1000% supportive toward Dick. She's just Kory 2.0

            Anonymous

Well it makes sense given that Taylor's not much of a writer and can't actually write a real story. He writes twitter moments loosely connected by the thinnest of plot threads but they're only in service for people to clip out panels and go "YASSSS" or "OMG I AM ALL ABOUT THIS" on twitter.

Dick should leave Babs and Starfire. He had three new love interests (Helena, Shawn and Bea) who worked out fairly well and had a strong foundation only got ruined to push bland ass Dick Babs because DC writers are unoriginal and cant write for shit.

I kinda liked Shawn and didn't like what Seeley ended up doing with her. I feel like she and Dickfacer in general would've stuck more had Seeley had a longer run (like 50-60 issues) and had written her more as a secondary protag or sidekick like Steph was back in Tim's solo.

Dick is a (mostly) ethical bawd that can't settle down.

both have way better ships and only seem to be together for dumbass editorial reasons despite having 0 chemistry.

Yeah, Ted/Babs is great because Ted's jokier nature can get Babs to lighten up while Babs being more serious helps to ground Ted. It's one of those pairings that's completely random but winds up working out incredibly well. I think that's a big problem in general with a lot of relationships in cape comics. The characters are put together because people want to see X with Y but it's not really thought of in just how the two characters are supposed to fit together and what each brings to their relationship.

Timsteph was barely bat related. It's about as wrong as Dick/Helena which is to say not at all. Keep in mind that due to Crisis shit they now have the memories off all their prior incarnations. Dick never went to law school, canonically he dropped out college after his freshman year pre-Flashpoint; pre-Crisis Earth-2 Dick was the one with the law degree. Babs did have a law degree pre-Flashpoint which she got by going back to college when she was something like 30, but post-Flashpoint she never finished grad school.

Aside from the trophy wife angle which shouldn't even matter here, dickbabs is just boring as frick and feels borderline incestuous with both being Fighty Morbin Batman Rangers characters. Kory has personality traits that compliment Dick and they're different enough that you can have them clash for drama, Babs is a fine character but both her and Dick make each other more boring if you put them in a romantic relationship together.
