Does anyone else like the first Victory Gundam more than V2 and its variants? It's just so simple and perfect.

I don't. Victory looks generic and bland with its small coloring. Same problem with GP01.
V2 is more original and cooler

Yeah, I like the V2 well enough but the disposable nature of the original really made fight scenes creative and interesting.

i like them both just as much. katoki's best work by far, he fell off after victory

how many pants units did uso go through? i swear he jettisoned the pants every other episode

No, basic V Gundam is honestly just kind of ugly and has nothing interesting going on visually, it's just a basic b***h gundam with a bit more white than usual.
Meanwhile V2 is an actually unique and very distinct design that stands out no matter where you put it.

I love both, the V1 might be my favorite "base" Gundam design though.
      It does so much right.
And the most impressive is being able to pack that core fighter system gimmick into such a simple form without making visual compromises.
Then you have the Hexa head variants and all the optional equipment like the Victory Dash Booster.
Plus it looks so good in motion. The design was much more animator friendly than some previous Gundam designs and it's action reads so clearly because of that without it having to sacrifice much detail.

There is a lot more to design that just how novel something is. Originality is good, but there's also ways for designs to appeal in more understated ways. The V1 is one such case.

I also really love the shapes of the V1.
The rounded off quadrilateral planes and its use of circles and cylinders give it a bit of a soft and friendly feeling that matches the naivety of Uso.

I just wish we get a new MG Victory and V2 that has better articulation. It is possible right?

It would be cool for an MGEX to explore that concept.
        It's definitely possible imo.
But there might be limits to what the chest can do unless you come up with some really ground breaking concepts

Victory is great. Simple and clean design that is meant to evoke a limited/mass production feel. V2 destroys all that by adding a gigantic yellow V on the blue chest (V2 has 2 Vs! Get it?) which is too on the nose and somehow makes a transforming suit look even more toyetic. 2nd V is a much better looking upgrade.

    really good standard gundam
    >more than V2
eh v2 strips so much detail from it, diminishes the unique chest vent/wienerpit design and I am not a fan of gundams being given wings that jut out so extremely (I'm a l-gaim/zeta/fin-funnel man)
Don't like them adding more vent dividers on the V2, the 2 hole look is very iconic for victories head design and I prefer the original heels compared to v2s that are pushing more into zeta's design
the lower leg armour is much better on the v2 and it's shoulders are more unique compared to other gundams

Yes I love them. I love the sleek design of the Victory and the fact that it's an agile, miniaturized mobile suit. The Hexa head looks so good too.
The V2 is a good upgrade in my opinion. It looks way more powerful while retaining some of the basic characteristics of the original.

Base victory is one of the better Basic Gundams in the franchise e.g. the MKII or the Strike, but it's got it's own flair with the core block and it's use of its parts.
The V2 is just a cool different design that changes up the way Uso fights in the mid game to keep things fresh.

I prefer the V1 over V2 simply because the long wing binders on V2 make it look too stiff. Outside of this scene I can't think of too many scenes where it moves as dynamically as V1 does.

51 has quite a bit. Some of it is just that the best mecha animator they had on the show, Atsushi Shigeta, leaves after episode 35.

I do like the nice, clean white aesthetic of Victory yeah. But I do really like the V2 as well, the wings and more angular body look real clean and fast without being too busy and the color scheme is really nice.

I get it though the first Victory has a really nice, clean look. I'm not a fan of Tomino's Second V design though, it just looks like Victory with a different backpack. I kind of want something a little more bold in my mid series upgrade designs.

Before I watched Victory I liked V2 better because WoL. After watching Victory, the Victory is a far better used suit. They went all out with the choreography with the Victory. It really highlighted how cool the suit was and should have been the standard going forward in the franchise.

It looks like a serviceable workhorse of a mobile suit, I can't dislike it.

I like it, but not more than the V2. The V2 is one of my favourite suits in terms of design. Although I do think the show gave the V better fights.

Definitely one of the most over-looked Gundams because its not flashy and LOOK AT MEEEEE design that Gundam is expected to look like now.

Katoki did a similar thing with the GP03 from 0083. More practical looking than flashy. Still done very well.

Must admit, his GundamFIX in '94 (using a modified Photoshop 1.0, iirc) really did make Gundam seem real.

What it lacks in features makes up with the pilot's creativity as we've seen Usso pull crazy moves with its modular gimmick. Other than that, it's just a souped up Gun-Ez.

Novel upgrade instead of V2. Most tech lore stuff now treat it as the stopgap between Victory and V2, where ever realizing just strapping Wings of Light into a base Victory unit didn't work out too well so they designed the V2 from the ground up to use it.

Did Tomino hate the V2 or something?

it was the mid-90s, he hated a lot of things

          Anonymous

I'd imagine it was less an explicit hatred of the V2 itself and more part of his ongoing frustrations and combative relationship with Bandai; who had recently bought Sunrise during Victory's production. They were pressing for more designs and more toyetic designs throughout production, and writing a Victory upgrade that barely changed the unit into the novels was probably just a way to reflect that annoyance.

dunno about the Victory, but V2 is notoriously difficult to pose and move around well due to the core block system being the main gimmick of the kit at the cost of overall stability. It might not fall apart by itself or anything but it's just unpleasant to pose. If you just want to build it and leave it standing in the katoki pose for all eternity it's not much of an issue though.

That's disappointing, maybe I'll just deal with the HG. Sounds like it's a more quality build.

Both HGUC Victory and V2 are really fricking good. And this might surprise you but the NG versions are also incredibly well made.

            Anonymous

The HG on the other hand runs into the issue of kinda off proportions, which is much more difficult to fix than issues with the kit's internal stability.
Assault Buster is normal retail though, so it has that going for it. But cheapskates didn't even put beam saber effect parts with it.

can it be fixed with resin kits?

I don't really know enough about resin kits to say, but I think some glue at particularly troublesome points as well as tightened joints should fix most issues. Giving up on ever transforming it and applying even more glue will work even better.

              Anonymous

The thing about the HGUC is that I believe it's based off the Ver Ka Victory so it comes with a really tiny head and big legs, yeah. In that regard, as someone who owns both, I think the old NG Victory looks way better, but with less articulation of course (not that the HGUC has that much either, mostly on the shoulders and elbows really).

            Anonymous

For whatever reason, the HG V2 is probably my favorite HG I own. The articulation isn't amazing or anything in the elbows/knees but it still looks great in any pose and just generally looks so nice in kit form. Very good overall build.

Glad I kept this 1/100 Volks V2 Gundam resin kit and passed on that MG. The Volks kit looks better than the MG in my opinion, better proportions, and if the MG is unpleasant to pose like you say, then I am not missing nothing since this resin kit is a fixed pose.

            Anonymous

i've got the MG2 and the AB expansion that includes revised joints for the base kit, poses well enough and is solid enough imo. only downside is due to transforming gimmick, no waist rotation, it isn't any better than say the older MG GP03.

Get the V2 Assaupt Buster version since apparently standalome V2 have weak parts that causes instability and apparently Assault Buster fixes that.

          Anonymous

only a little bit, the kit is still just not fun to pose. besides, good luck finding that at a half-decent price.

I used to not think anything of the V1 until I started watching Victory Gundam and seeing it in action has made me love it alot. I think thats the issue with it, you need to see it in motion to really appreciate it's more tame design.

Gunpla engineers still have nightmares about the V2's weird "suspenders" docking scheme. At least on the V1 the nipples didn't connect to the lower half.

Can it even have a turning waist? Maybe with 5 times the parts count.

      Anonymous

I can imagine a way to give the V2 a waist swivel, it’s very weird but it should work.

But honestly I just wish they would give the Victories a chogokin toy.
With metal parts you could definitely make everything work out.
A huge reason why the kits suck is because of plastic tolerances.
