I don't like capeshit but My Hero Academia is one of the single worst shonen I've ever seen and I have no idea how it ever got popular. Absolute trash, I'm glad people no longer give a shit about it.
I only watched as far as when Deku started getting handed even more free fricking superpowers, but just the fact that there are powers outside of super strength, flight and shooting lasers immediately makes it more interesting to watch than the MCU.
The formula of splitting the class up into groups for a [insert villain/training programme/school tournament/etc here] and watching them use their powers in a novel way worked for a few seasons at least.
Also the action was at the very least well animated for a while. Obviously it goes to shit eventually but that's true of all big anime, and the MCU never even looked good at the start.
It doesnt reinvent the wheel to the point where its unusable. It keeps it simple, likeable, and the best part is it ends. It doesnt have a reboot when numbers fail, it doesnt reset, it doesnt have multiple homosexual universes, it has a beginning, a middle and it ends.
THIS. The worst battle shonen anime franchise is Dragon Ball. Guess why? Because it uses the same formula as western capeshit, namely that it has no fricking end. It's guaranteed to have corporate mandated sequels till the cash cow stops giving milk.

shit like this is why i never understood the appeal of thor. how can you look at an ugly african ape and say "this guy's name is sigurd. you know, like the tale of sigurd and gudrun?". It's so dishonest.

it used to be, for the lack of a better word, a more 'honest' presentation of westernized mythology, remember this character was introduced in the early 60's. things like his bouts with heracles or zeus during the events of troy, as well as confronting the celestials, were cool on their own as far as entertainment for 10 year olds goes
