Does he have any successor?

I didn't know whether to ask this here or in / ic /...

I mean, there's someone... Any close friends or co-workers who arguably learned or "inherited" Derrick J Wyatt's drawing style?

Obviously his art is irreplaceable, but I'm curious if there was anyone close to him who learned Wyatt's drawing style for future works related to animation and character design

Well his style was basically Glenn Murakami's so make of that what you will.

You mean that Wyatt's style was inherited from Glen Murakami?

It took me a long time to cope after he took over as the main artist for Omniverse. I never gave 00s Transformers a chance, so I was rightfully passed. Then I remembered that I loved Teen Titans and the hope started coming through.

You should legitimately give Transformers Animated a shot. It's a wonderful show.

Ironically the animation is one of the worst things about it, there are numerous episodes when you can tell the budget for animating things is not very good. But the art is great, the character designs are great, the voice acting is great, and you will love the plotting and the characters. It has my favorite version of many Transformers characters, including Prowl, Starscream, and even Megatron.

This, his character designs are strong. In animation tho, his designs shined in Omniverse the most.

    RIP Derrick.

Brianne Drouhard and Glen Murakami are the next best.

It also comes to mind Radford Sechrist, creator of Kipo. She gives me Sari vibes.

Then... Do you consider them as the "successors" of Derrick J Wyatt's style?

        "Spiritual ones" if you will.

The first two aren't since they were his peers. I think Murikami is semi-retired anyways.

I saw the drawing style you mentioned... And the style of Radford Sechrist is the closest to Wyatt's style,

Only Sechrist's style is like a more polished and stylized version of it

There are no successors. The old guard behind the stuff you love from the 60s-00s have no proteges and everything they've learned to do in order to make their distinctive art-styles will die with them. This is because, through either incompetence or shortsighted trend-chasing and cost-cutting, art schools have let classical art completely slip out of their curriculum and totally rely on computer animation as a crutch. The current degeneration of the western drawing industry is one consequence of this (such as CalArts/Beanmouth).

    Pic related.

No, twitter is gonna delete accounts after 30 days of inactivity, so unless somebody logged into his account, time is running out.

This is going to sound implausible but I used to be friends with DJW. We're still friends on instagram and facebook. THIS is how I found out he died. This thread. What the frick.

I feel terrible, I had no idea he had passed, but that explains his sudden silence.. I've been too busy with own life falling apart, so this has been a real shock for me.

Don't be like me and make sure you check on your friends and family anons, make sure you let them know they're important to you.

Rest in peace Derrick, wish we had spoken more before you passed. I'm sorry I didn't know sooner.

          >I can't believe it's been two years.
The last 3 years in particular have been... exceptionally extraordinary in how easy it has been to lose track of others, no matter how close the relation.
          (especially on Meta platforms...)

Like an apprentice? Did he mentor anyone? Run a studio filled with animation hopefuls? Kinda like the time spent in the John K. camp?
Sometimes artists die and can't be replaced, anon.

If DJW had an heir, they'd suck and we'd hate them.
Perhaps it's best not to think too hard about it.

I suppose. I was also going through some of the worst years of my life, by far. But I'm completely crushed.

I hope his legacy lives on at the very least. He was a good man.

I mean, by design, there's a bunch of artists who can mimic his style since he was lead designer for a few shows. Their art is designed to be imitated.

              >by design, there's a bunch of artists who can mimic his style since he was lead designer for a few shows.
Those artists are there to follow the lead of the Lead Designer. One of the things a lead designer does (not always, of course) is leave extensive design notes for artists to follow. These notes guide artists toward understanding the design rules and philosophy during a shows life. These rules can change from season to season. Maybe every episode. Maybe every shot.

For example, both Glen Murakami and Rob Renzetti worked on Batman TAS. Would either of them be suited to take the lead of THAT show's style had Timm and Glines stepped down? Can that art be imitated?

CAN art be imitated? What does that even mean?

But... There will be some artist (currently or may appear in the future, who knows) who looks at his drawing style and says "this guy is the true successor to Derrick J Wyatt"
