I watched few episodes and honestly, it was pretty mediocre

It's one of the best anime of the 70s and the main villain is one of the best in anime history. Easily in Tomino's top 3.

The 'legacy' is mostly in it being the first Sunrise robot anime, and being worked on by a load of people who would soon go on to big success like Tomino, Nagahama, Yasuhiko, Yoshitake Suzuki, Moriyasu Taniguchi, etc.

      >It's one of the best anime of the 70s
lmao no way, it's got very strong designs (both Raideen and the MotWs) and frequently nice animation, but the actual episode-to-episode storytelling is pretty fricking weak and Sharkin is the only one of the villains who remotely stands out (and even he was better executed in Nagahama's subsequent shows)

Not all of Tomino's works were noteworthy. It's not as if stuff like Xabungle or King Gainer spawned huge franchises
Raideen had a few sequels and was a SRW mainstay for a long time, however, so someone evidently saw something in it

Not everything "noteworthy" turns into a franchise.

is it special in any way, or does it have something that makes it distinguishable from others?
Ideon didn't make a franchise, but it's famous for its ending
Zambot 3 is famous for its brutality
Dunbine is famous for being one of first isekai shows

I haven't watched it at all, but as far as I can tell, it's the first robot show to feature a robot that is more supernatural than it is scientific

Was god mazinger inspired by this show?
    >statue-like robot like god mazinger
    >is also a god that telepathically speaks with the mc like god mazinger
    >originated from Mu Island, like god mazinger
    >MC has psychic powers like god mazinger's mc

It’s the first super robot of mystical origin and not of science like its predecessors, it’s like if daimajin was actually a good guy and was made of steel than stone

It was the first mecha show with a toy that could transform even if it wasn't fully show accurate. Getter Robo was too unpossible.

It got two remakes/sequels/reboots? so yeah.

Sure it does. Don't listen to the people comparing this to a certain other anime.

It's considered the first ever transforming mech that wasn't also a combiner like Getter

While RahXephon's design and abilities are inspired by Raideen, everyyhing else about it is clearly more similar to Eva

it showed in Hawaii on TV in the 70's. I wish Generation Kikaida would release some of the animated series that showed back then like they did with Kikaider/Kikaider 01/Kamen Rider V3/Inazuman

Generation Kikaida are dead, aren't they? I think they've still got their socials, but they've stopped distributing anything

It was one of the first mecha shows to have a majority-female fanbase for it. They loved Yasuhiko’s character designs cause they thought the characters he drew were sexy. Yasuhiko talks about this in My Back Pages.
