It doesn't do much on its own. Comics never sell well if its only appeal is coomer art. Stuff like Battle Chasers is well known for Red Monika but the style and action is what got people invested in the series before Joe Mad dropped the whole thing. Even though it's cheesecake, it's more like the cherry on top.

This. Nerds on the internet will complain for a decade straight any time they get a comic that isn't full of sexy costumes, but including such designs in the first place does not directly translate into better sales. The most obvious evidence of this is that the comics with sexier designs do not dramatically outsell their peers that lack this quality, therefore it cannot be the deciding factor in sales.

Nor does it make sense that such designs ever *could* be the make or break point when the internet exists. For anyone so obsessive over these designs that it is their driving motivation as a consumer, they can get a nearly unlimited amount of art of these designs online *for free*, why would they ever pay for a comic of it when their alternative that caters to their desires is so easily available without the cost?

I think comics (of all countries and genres, not just capeshit) if they find it fitting can make do with a healthy mix of sexy and substance. Substance trumps with sexy being the cherry on top but if sexy is as much as part of the identity of the property as it is it's substance, it becomes jarring to suddenly denounce it, alienating even.

Likewise, you can have gorgeous sexy art but if the substance fails, things fall apart as well, harder and faster even.
Why can't we have a healthy dose of both?

Additionally Batlle Chasers sold because it was styled as a battle manga when actual translations of battle manga were still nascent in the west. One of the reasons the revival is falling short is because now far more people can look at it and go "Wait Garrison is just Guts" when back in the day a lot of us were ignorant.

It’s a multiplier. Hard to carry everything on its own, but it maximizes appeal of what you have. Right now stuff that appeals to heterosexual men is in decline, so it’s a good way to stand out to an active/excited base. It’s good for longevity too if you have a popular character.

something I never understood is why Naruto is more influential when One Piece is more popular. MHA, KnYm JJK and Black Clover all feel inspired by Naruto in one way or another but you don't really see much One Piece influence in most modern shounen.

                Anonymous

One Piece is harder to imitate since the story branches wildly with events happening simultaneusly on diferent world parts, powerups aren't completely linear since they have both unique abilitys (like hxh and jojos) and Haki (regualr "ki/energiy" shonen shit) but also weapons, technology and just wacky cahracters

so people just use regular shonen formula from dbz/naruto/etc. easy power levels scales and magical asspulls, you ever asked why jiraiya had like 100 jutsus and naruto only ever learn like 5, cuz jiraiya shows in less than 5% of all the manga

SJ actively discourages series that are "too much like" other series they are currently running from getting printed. One Piece is an adventure manga. Ergo they don't fricking accept submissions of other adventure manga.

Of course "battle" doesn't register for them So all these groups that ultimately fall into cliches that define static action series got their foot in the door by promising different things.

You think the israeli owners of these companies ASKED white people what they wanted to see? Do you think they give a shit that sales tank? The beatings will continue until morale improves.

                Anonymous

Sure, that's part of it, but even on the indie side where said companies have no say, a lot of what white people have been putting out in recent years has been really really gay.
Eventually it stops just being a israeli issue and becomes a multitude of issues.

You're gonna have to prove those are made by white people, and prove the "indies" are not in fact controlled by the same companies. Your claims are dubious at best, so your conclusions are pure speculation on your part.

I blame people like Linkara (even if he turn out to be a degen) for the death of cheesecake in mainstream comics because he talk all the time about being a feminist and all this shit talking about shit being objectifying before people even thought about that shit with comics. I remember watching that video in my teens and when he got to that part even I knew how stupid he seemed.

The problem is the inherent prudishness of american culture which prevents people from just accepting something as being sexy and that being okay.

In America, if someone accuses you of framing a specific panel of putting a character in a position that highlights their cleavage, the obvious and objectively correct answer is "Yes, that was intentional." But you're not allowed to say that, because that admits that humans are capable of sexual arousal in this sinful christian world, so they have to instead either backpeddle furiously and promise not to do it again or make up some garbage excuse for how, yes, it might LOOK like this character's outfit is a sling bikini with a couple of accessories, but ACTUALLY that makes sense because X Y Z.

If people could just admit that they drew the sexy person, man or woman, that way because its sexy without getting eaten alive on social media? We would be in a much healthier place.

Linkara was only able to have such extremist prude views because he probably had an angsty crippling porn addiction that he was trying to overcompensate for, his webcomic literally had a "rape city". A strange premise for a superhero setting with no real sense but to be pure voyeurism for the sake of it, so you can understand why he has a harsher view of comics' own minor disturbing voyeurisms.

Choosing beauty over ugliness is usually a safe bet for working in a visual medium. Making sexually appealing work is one way to do that. Desexualized work is sterile, alien, anti-human.

Incorrect, it's actually a lot harder artistically and more visually impressive to make something intentionally ugly
That shouldn't be confused with ugly art that is bad fundamentally.

Clash of genres, it's trying to appeal to the wrong audiences while trying to be taken seriously at once, if I want to read a comic with real stakes, "x" girl boobies "y" guys ass is going to alienate or just feel like pandering. If I want coombait, I read coombait comics that know what they are and don't pretend to be anything else.

Though there's nothing wrong with a little fanservice as long as it's used for plot reasons.

It's the opposite these days. They take themselves too lightly so anytime something significant is supposed to happen it's in between self aware and meta humor
In manga you can have totally ridiculous characters with weird or sexy outfits talk about life-or-death stakes

Its called the Halo Effect. Essentially, we are predisposed to liking people we consider attractive, regardless of other qualities, and will mistrust an ugly person in the same situation.

This is an argument for making your characters pleasing to look at, but that doesn't have to mean sexy. A character with an attractive or cute face in a pleasing art style is all you need, you don't need to have the character dressed in a bikini with watermelons on her chest for audiences to like them.

The town I grew up in had a comic/card/ttrpg/wargaming hobby shop and no space to play in it. It STRONGLY reminded me of a video rental outlet. 3 shelve rows going from 40-50 feet back from the counter, the counter block access to the door, and an 8ish foot gap between the counter and the shelves and a waiting area at the cash register.

Even if they'd ripped half the shelving out it would still be pretty tight to fit lounge space. The place had stagnate air and I don't know if I'd have wanted to hang out there. I as a child wouldn't have spent $30 on snacks going there afterschool... so... where is their revenue stream in just collecting nerds?

In any consumer product, you need a hook and you need staying power. If you don't have staying power then your product is a flash in the pan without sustainable revenues. If you don't have a hook then you don't draw consumers in to begin with. Sexy art (good art in general) is a hook. You need a good hook, but it's not staying power. But ugly art and ugly characters aren't a hook, and can drive consumers away.

having ugly characters is more viable nowadays because then Larry Fink gives you free money through ESG scores so the publishers will always make a profit even if literally nobody reads their crap they have to sell

You don't need huge breasts to sell copies. The issue is how dogshit american comics these days. No amount of ass or breasts gonna fix it.

Bro, have you ever watched School Days?
School Days isn't moe, it literally ends with a double-murder-suicide beheading.

chris chan being free but thad still being in jail is the most evident proof of systemic racism I have ever seen

I heard he did 6 years and got out in 2018 but vaguely remember something about him getting locked up again. Can't find anything about it though, so IDK.

morons cost the state 5 times or more what a regular prisioner (doctors, nurses, facilities meds), its cheaper to release it and just send him his autist paycheck (so he pays his med bills himself) and wait for him to an hero

also he´s probably just a menace for himself or family, not the entire society like a true criminal

No. If people are interested in the design they'll just save it and commission someone to art with it. If you want an example, there's the Metroid series. Samus is at least the top 5 female game characters that everyone has cunmed too but the sales of the games would tell you other wise.

I think if they go too sexy then people are too embarrassed to actually buy the comics. Now some sexy panels here and there? people probably like that.

    >Does sexy art increase or decrease sales?
There are dollars dedicated to sexy art that cannot be accessed otherwise. However, sexy is very specific, so what is sexy to one is a turnoff to others. So when you say "increase or decrease sales", it's in compared to what?

Also, don't forget the childrens market.

Also, at certain levels of sexy, you get goverment and systemic intervention. Eg Payment processors. Cinemaphile is HEAVILY affected by this shit.

The "anti sex" left still frequently wants sex, but sex that's unpalatable to heterosexual cis males.

    >Any conrete proof?
You have dedicated comics, issues, art books that are sexy specific. You can compare them to both less sexy and non sexy. Consider the relative market sizes of both sexy and non sexy digital art. It is easily a THOUSAND TIMES fricking harder to be viable doing non sexy art.

YA works for example don't max out sexy. But something like Heavy Metal was crippled when the government forced it to tone down sexy.
