Anime is a popular as it was in the 2000s. People still only know of the big named shows and everything else is still pretty obscure. It only got bigger in 2005 because of broadband internet and bitorrent. It's pretty much hasn't grown since then.
Even in the 90s sci-fi had Saturday morning anime where you had to wake up super early to see it. Then in the 2000s you had toonami and adult swim. And everyone still watches all the Miyazaki films. Anime isn't nearly as popular as you think. One piece is the only adaptation that's succeeded while all the others fail miserably.
