if he didn't understand his contract in 202x, that's on him

you don't get royalties by b***hing, and the reason those contracts are as tight as they are is because the Kirbys and Siegels and so on and their descendants already spent decades suing over every little thing; if he thinks he's got a case the first thing he should do is go see a lawyer, who'd tell him not to b***h in public because it could affect a settlement

      it is not 1937

you are not going to get a billion dollar royalty check because you did work for hire with a full contract

This, Cates isn't the first person to come up with a Symbiote outbreak there was at least two outbreaks WAY before he wrote King in Black as well as the Web of Shadows game

Even the PS1 game had that kind of outbreak

Yeah didn't that Web of Shadows pull the same shtick? I feel like a lot of these morons are really grasping at very broad straws. Super-hero fights super villain is not an overly complex plot thread.

comic artists get shit for adaptations, even if it is just one-to-one copies. Sucks big time, but it's nothing new.

I heard somewhere that EVS got like six figures since he was the artist who did the new 52 designs they used in the justice league movie. Seems like bullshit, but I've heard other cases of DC being very good about royalties and adaptations while Marvel is absolutely dogshit at it.

It's Marvel not DC, Marvel don't pay or credit for shit, ask Jim Starlin.

Didn't they only pay him like 10 grand for infinity war and endgame?

Starlin got paid more for a character in Batman v Superman sharing the same name as KGBeast than he did for any Marvel movie with Thanos in it.

I've also heard Todd MacFarlane has received more money from Yolanda Montez appearing in Stargirl than he has for venom. Truly mind blowing how bad marvel is. Like yeah you don't technically owe them anything but wouldn't make good pr?

it's unfortunate. with royalty money he might be able to afford enough drugs to od so we never have to see this homosexual again.

Because Marvel wasn't run by morons. They know that the writers and artists would bleed them dry if they retained their rights. They also know that individuals can't afford to fight Marvel in a legal battle.

DC did follow suit, and is currently doing the same to their new creators. But they can't revise old contracts.

They adapted his Venom event extremely poorly. They did him a favor of leaving him off the credits.

it's the fricking current year and stupid writers still don't get the fact that whatever they write for Marvel is owned by Marvel? You wan't royalties and ownership? Go make your own fricking comic book. I'm pretty sure Kirkman and Ennis will make maasive bank for the inclusion of their characters in MK

If they're going to pony up money for Cates, they better split it with David Michelinie and Bendis too.

Marvel has always given shit royalties i.e. Len Wein saying her earned more in royalties from Lucius Fox's appearances in Nolan's films than he did from all of Wolverine's appearances and merch. Of course DC's royalties became Marvel tier once Levitz was pushed out too. It's why the idea that people create OCs for royalties is laughable: nobody's getting shit from Marvel or DC.

Shouldn't they have paid the artist? It's visual likeness at best. They didn't reference Knull, and a symbiote invasion isn't even something Cates came up with. He ripped off Web of Shadows.

    So yeah, frick him

So we can just confirm Cates is a fricking parasite trying to get a paycheck from a successful game
