Hey Cinemaphile, for anyone who has tickets for or is interested in seeing The Thing on June 19th or 22nd, as presented by Fathom Events, you should know that they're going to be showing it via streaming by satellite, which I have confirmed with them by email. Based on comments made by people online, these satellite streams tend to be noticeably low quality, particularly when blown up to a large theater screen.
This company, Fathom Events, has a lot of showings like these of older movies among other things, and it seems that how they show them falls into 2 categories: streamed over their "Digital Broadcast Network" (DBN) or by the theater receiving a "Digital Cinema Package" (DCP) wherein they receive actual files to play, in which case the quality is much better than the DBN method of streaming over satellite.
There have been many reports about DBN screenings of films being visibly low quality and otherwise dissatisfying.
Check this thread for more info (especially page 17 onward): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=316302
I was excited to go see it next week but now I think I'm going to cancel my tickets. You guys do what you will, hopefully any anons that need to know this info read this post.

Wow, some actual media info on Cinemaphile
Thanks anon I'll just watch my 4k.
I made threads promoting this event and was thanked by some anons, so when I found this info I felt I owed it to them to pass on this info.
Pic related, I didn't know all this stuff then and just emailed them asking what the source for the showing was and if it was the 4K HDR release of the movie that came out last year. If you don't believe me or the people in that thread I linked, just email them yourself, they'll probably reply within a day (though it's the weekend now so maybe not).
I hope it turns out to be good. Are you seeing it on the 19th?
Thanks for the informative thread, some googling and reading the thread you linked confirms this is legit. Guess I'll stay home and just watch my bluray.
based responsible for his own actions chad
Of course it is you thick frick, why would they ship a film print of a movie they're gonna have two showings of. The point is it's on a big screen you sperg c**t.
Are you the same guy raging in this thread and the one before?
Anyway they don't need to ship a film print and the idea of shipping 800 of them out to all the theaters isn't realistic. But they could do what they do with some of their showings and send over a high quality digital file of the film on/onto a hard drive, instead of streaming it live for whatever reason.
>But they could do what they do with some of their showings and send over a high quality digital file of the film on/onto a hard drive, instead of streaming it live for whatever reason.
My guess is studio/theater fat cats found a way to keep the possibility of high quality files leaking out. They figured they could just lessen the viewing experience in order to stream it live and collect the same premium price for admission. Meanwhile who cares if you the consumer gets fricked over
I don't know, I can't imagine that being the thought process in regard to something like The Thing, and they're not doing streams for everything, so why be selective in this way?
But the last part is certainly true, who cares about the consumer indeed.
Prince Charles cinema in London does one-off screenings on film all the time.

Where did you guys find a 4k version? Is that the streaming version? I have a 1080p bluray version that has the audio track from another version which apparently had better audio quality
The better commentary is on the DVD special edition release from I believe Universal itself during the mid 2000's. It's very funny, but realistically are you going to listen to it? The one for Escape from New York is actually a lot better I think.
Does anyone know if it's on the Scream Factory 4k bluray? I own it, but it's currently at a friends house.
No, not a commentary track. It's literally the audio from one version with the video from a different version. Maybe I'm moronic, but you can check for yourself, it's this one
>The.Thing.1982.ARROW.REMASTER.1080p.BluRay.REMUX.AVC.DTS-HD.MA.5.1-FGT
Looking at this page: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Thing-Blu-ray/212083/#Review
>Both the 2K and 4K versions of The Thing come with three DTS-HD Master Audio tracks: a 4.1 audio mix created from the original 70mm six-track Dolby Stereo sound track, a 5.1 mix, and a generic 2.0. There are very small disparities between each track's audio bitrates on both transfers and they sound practically identical to my hears. I prefer listening to either the 5.1 or 4.1 mixes, each of which really bring out Ennio Morricone's rising-in-pitch synthesizer. Carpenter opted to employ the "Main Title" theme as an ostinato throughout the film.
Maybe it's one of those tracks?
Alright, I looked it up. Mine was the video from the ARROW release and the audio from the TURBINE release. Since then though I see there is a 4k version available so I'll have to get on that to upgrade my library/archive.
>The.Thing.1982.TURBINE.ARROW.REMASTERED.1080p.BluRay.REMUX.AVC.DTS-HD.MA.5.1-FGT
based informative OP
disappointing. Still gonna see it with my dad.
but everyone here pirates? what's your point
>i emailed them personally because picture quality is very important to me.
OR, you're just shitposting because your local showing is sold out and you're a pissy little b***h. Frick off.
>which I have confirmed with them by email
Prove it.
That's some bullshit.
My local indie theater shows the 35mm print almost every year.
Genuinely insightful information. Thanks, anon!
If they're showing The Thing near me on the big screen, I am going to go see it regardless, though.
>via satellite
For what purpose? Just plug your laptop into the projector and boot up the 1080p YIFY rip.
i think this is illegal somehow via distribution rights. not sure how fathom works but fun fact in a 2nd run theatre i managed we ran alot of movies we had 35mm prints for off dvds on laptops because it was easier
also a few times the laptops would minimize the windows movie player/vlc player and customers would come and b***h that theyre watching a dvd for $2
>on laptops because it was easier
Gif related.
Can you tell us more? What about the quality is bad? And does the sound suffer as well?
>DCI one a week after that
What's DCI, is that like the DCP thing? Digital but they have the files on-site? Which theater?
And do tell us here about it when you see it, I'll try and have a thread up on the 19th for people who see it then to share their experience.
Hah, that's awesome. Do people get warned about that on their way in/before the movie? I'd have to tell some of the people I see movies with to resist their phone checking urges if I go with them to this place.
>What's DCI, is that like the DCP thing?
Drum Corps International. It's the best marching bands performing. That one will be interesting because it will be broadcast live so I'll see how that goes
Ah, I'm dumb, I misinterpreted. So the Fathom showing of the DCI. Sounds interesting, I understand the audio comment. I wonder how much audio is affected by the whole streaming situation, maybe that other theater employee anon can enlighten us.
lazy homosexual
I've never seen The Thing. Should I go see it in theaters on the 19th or just watch it at home?
It's worth seeing in the theater at least the once.
Thanks for the info, I’ll make sure to check on this for any future Fathom events I’m interested in seeing.
Thanks pal. Was considering checking it out at my local theater but now I'll just rewatch at home
Would be great if they did a Criterion release while Carpenter is still alive
For future screenings- is there an easy way to find out if they’ll be streamed or DCP? Or will I need to email them?
some fan sites post ahead of time
i think wrath of khan in september is likely dcp
I saw the thing in theaters and it was a super old degraded print that It was almost black and white and like red. Very grindhouse, it was cool.
Awesome
This sounds amusing but it does raise an important point in the 35mm vs 4k digital options of seeing it in a theater. 35mm might be superior, but only if the reel is in good condition, so that's one more factor to keep in mind when looking for a showing.
I've never been to one, what makes it comfy?
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Thing-4K-Blu-ray/272403/
High resolution digital showings aren't always terrible, but visual quality aside, there's also the enjoyment of a large powerful sound system, and even more importantly: the crowd. Seeing this movie in particular with other people adds a lot of value to the experience on its own. People have posted some nice experiences seeing it with a crowd in previous threads. Even the people seeing the satellite stream might have a great time despite the lower visual quality, because they'll be seeing it with a crowd and experiencing all those great moments in the film collectively.

Wow, this is actually very sound advice. Thanks anon
>I've never been to one, what makes it comfy?
Reclining seats, good beer, full meal service, vintage trailers and news reels running before the feature, it's just a good fricking time. Went to one when I went to SXSW a thousand years ago - buds and I split a couple pitchers of beer and had some burgers and rings while watching Moon. Good time. Always wanted to go to one for one of their classic feature nights.
idk if this is real or some homosexualry hating on a decent thriller movie but have a bump anyway OP
Ill probably still go see it on the 22nd. I have nothing better to do so... I do hope the PQ is good, if not, oh well. It will be fun at least
>I've never seen it in theaters but it sounds like an amazing way to watch it,
for sure. Despite having seen it dozens of times, I want to see it in theater. It will be fun!
>look to see if any Cineplex near me is doing it
>literally only 1 Cineplex in the entire country and it's over 350 KM away
What the frick
>The Thing at an Alamo Drafthouse
sounds fricking comfykino
why would I go to a movie theatre to watch something that's already on Blu Ray anyway? to get shot?
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE CALLED IT OUT.
This happened to me once when I went to go see one of the classic movies a few years ago, and the movie actually shorted out because the connection to the internet was bad because of a storm outside. I couldn't believe they were just streaming the movie over cable. Fathom should be ashamed charging $15 a ticket for this shit.
Yeah I've read some people's accounts of having experiences like this with the satellite streams. Or also a situation where the theater doesn't start it properly or some kind of issue delays the start, and when they get it on it's already partway into the stream and the theater has no way of rewinding it. Sounds terrible. Is there anything else you can tell us about your experience?
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Thing-Blu-ray/212083/#Review
>Audio Commentary by Director John Carpenter and Actor Kurt Russell
Is that it you think? There are another 2 commentaries listed as well.
This Scream release with the Arrow scan, does it actually display in 4k? That page only lists playback at 2k. Would that mean the release from last year be the only true 4k release?
Nice digits, and you mean this?: https://www.fathomevents.com/events/taxi-driver-40th-anniversary?date=2016-10-19
Googled around but haven't found any info regarding that question.
It happened to me twice actually, the first experience they didn't know how to get the movie started, and so it was late to start. Then all of a sudden, the film is being fast forwarded to the end like they're playing a DVR recording of the film. I don't know if that utilized satellite or what, but the quality of the film wasn't the best. That's when I first learned this stuff is done using cable technology.
The second experience was during the storm, and the film stopped partway through because the connection was going out, and an ERROR screen came up with the DVR screen showing the file. It actually legit said something like "Pay-Per-View event," I was baffled.
That sucks man, and I agree, very despicable to be doing this when it's so simple to provide a better experience. When you had the interruptions due to the storm, when they got it back in had it skipped ahead or started where it left off at least?
Thanks bro, I do it for my fellows on Cinemaphile
It seems like their schtick is to have a higher degree of respect for films and the film viewing experience than the average theater, might have to go check them out. I like this bit in particular:
>Late Policy: You may not enter a movie after it has started. If you show up to your desired screening late, we will happily exchange your ticket for a different showtime or for a raincheck to a future show.
The Fifth Element I don't know about. On the press release it says:
>“The Fifth Element 25th Anniversary” will play in more than 800 movie theaters nationwide on Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network.
https://www.fathomevents.com/news/press-release/sci-fi-classic-the-fifth-element-returns-to-cinemas-this-summer-to-celebrate-its-25th-anniversary
But in the thread I linked in the OP, post #325 says it is DCP, not DBN. But I don't know on what authority they're making this claim.
In the same thread someone else says that the upcoming Transformers 15th anniversary showing will be DCP, and if you go to its press release (https://www.fathomevents.com/news/press-release/fathom-events-and-paramount-pictures-home-entertainment-celebrate-the-15th-anniversary-of-transformers-coming-to-theaters-nationwide-on-july-10th-and-14th) it just says this:
>The film will playin theaters nationwide through Fathom Events. Tickets can be purchased online atwww.fathomevents.com or at participating theater box offices.
No mention of "Fathom's Digital Broadcast Network" on the page. So that makes me lean toward Fifth Element likely being DBN.
>I like this bit in particular
They're also REALLY strict about phones. They've been known to ban people from the entire chain for texting during screenings.
Also, same anon as
I can understand when something for Fathom is a live event, like when Rifftrax does commentary stuff live in the theater, I saw their The Room and Godzilla (1998) showings and it was fun, went off without a hitch. But when you're showing a fricking 50 YEAR OLD MOVIE, there is no excuse to be using cable tech to show them. You have 4K blu-rays and 35mm to 70mm reels for these films. Don't be cheap when you're charging such a price, when I could just buy the blu-ray for cheaper.
film is meant to be watched in film. stop accepting anything less, morons. what else is the point on theaters? overpriced concessions and Black folk?
I saw Taxi Driver in theatres for its 40th
Do you think I got the shit quality one? I don’t really remember what it looked like because the movie was so kino
Look man if you're gonna pussy out on being the designated shooter just say so.
>Don't watch this movie because I said so.
This shit thread again.
have a nice day you moronic child.
>inb4 childish responce
Slit your throat.
OP, you appear to be a true gentleman.
>paying to see a movie that came out decades ago
wtf is this shit?
just torrent it, idiots.
Paying to see it in theaters, moron.
>a movie theater is more comfortable than your living room
What kind of Black person sty are you living in?
Stop making excuses being poor.
Watch it at home on your tv or laptop
don't be autistic
what about the fifth element?
I work at a kinoplex and can confirm the things you've said. A lot of these Fathom Events of older movies aren't very good quality
shit thread
ill use the showing on sunday to see if fathoms showings are any good. I plan on going to see the DCI one a week after that but I really just want good audio for that one
So, you're posting this again. Be honest, you got fired for cause and now you're on some weird quest for online revenge.
Alright seems like this thread is pretty dead. I'll give it another bump in case it helps anyone and then I'll let it die of natural causes.
the only way I watch these older films is if the theater projects them from an actual archival 35mm print. DCPs can't be avoided for modern flicks shot digitally but a DCP of a film from the 70ies or 80ies makes no sense. might as well watch the 4K UHD at home then.
H-how do I get unreasonably pissed off at a post like this? FRICK INFORMATION.
Man, that's shitty. Didn't know this was a thing.
I remember when they showed Char's Counterattack back in December 2019 for Gundam's 40th birthday in some theaters the movie was playing audio from a tv commercial because of a satellite feed mixup.
You witnessed this or read about it?
But that's awful, and kind of hilarious.
My screening went fine. It was only in a few theatres. I saw a few Twitter videos when it happened, but it seems those vids or accounts got deleted. It only happened for the first couple of minutes. But apparently other showings had problems.
Streaming in movie theaters? What the frick? They expect people to pay for that shit? If I'm buying a movie ticket, I want a fricking better-than-BluRay flawless digital print, or a goddamn 35mm film print. Not this shit.
What's next, movie theaters are going to stream camrips from some sketchy Indian site with online casino ads sprinkled in between?
>movie theaters are going to stream camrips from some sketchy Indian site with online casino ads sprinkled in between?
They're doing that in Russia.
The real reason not to watch it:
John Carpenter is now a israelite puppet
is he israeli?
>live in obscurity for decades playing video games
>announce on twitter that they live definitely isn't about israelites
>now is getting gigs again for music and probably lots of movie offers
He definitely stopped giving an iota of shit for a long time now. He did F.E.A.R. 3 video game gig as the writer and he did jack shit, pretty much in it just for the paycheck.
>According to associate producer Chris Julian, "John Carpenter did absolutely nothing. It was like we licensed his name and that was about it."
to be fair if you dig around a bit you'll realize carpenter is pretty much a hack and has had a great team with him from his first big movie aka halloween. most of these people were friends and they all did each other favors, the moment these people went off to be successful in their own endeavors john was churning on literal crap until he retired. he's had some decent work in regards to composing though.
This is unbelievable. OP, good on you for calling this shit out.
>*slurp*
>Mhhmmmm! Hmmm that's good J&B Rare Blended Scotch Whisky™! It truly is The Thing™ to have besides you on a cold Antarctican day like this!
Carpenter, you fricking hack...
