What’s the appeal of X-Man? How did his solo run for so many issues? Who could possibly like this guy? Cable without the character and replaced by soulless quips and contrived soap opera angst.

She tried to frick him yeah, and a parallel universe version of her was trying to find a version of him who’d be her submissive partner

X-Men was still coasting on its 90s popularity, it's terrifying how aimless the whole book is.

I'm reasonably sure that in the many comes-and-goes between Nate and Madelyne, at one point they hook up in the Alps or whatever, they cut away and when we get back to them there's some clothing laid around and Nate is shirtless.

In part X-Men being so popular in the 90s meant any semi-competent spinoff book had a decent chance of selling well. Marvel have never really gotten away from that mindset, and keep on thinking they can sell a gorillion X-books a month just because they used to be able to.

For X-Man himself, it was your usual mutant teen angst mixed with him being a younger Cable unleashed at his full power potential, so it had something for the teen audience, and he was a guy for the power levels crowd. is right that he did eventually hook up with Madelyne, so that brought in the incest audience too. He seemed to be a husbando for a lot of gay fans too.

People loved angst and wallowing back then. Have you ever actually tried to read Spawn today? Most of the comic is just Al crying like an emo boy about his ex, over and over, to no resolution.

I thought Spawn ended in the 90s

wait X-man was basically just being some quipping psionic god? (I think if he's that or somehting?)

I thought as a personaility it would be something more tough and kind of badass, not something with spider-man.

oh yeah, that was when Bishop had a cyborg arm too. Him and Cable should have been cybros instead of trying to kill each other. Man, I didn't like that whole Hope storyline at the time, but it was waaay better than anything else from the last couple of years' worth of X-books

the point was to explore the mythos behind a child of scott and jean without all of the cable bullshit
cable as a character is bloated and stupid with ill-defined abilities and dumb time travel stuff and dumb legacy virus stuff and dumb cyborg stuff
nate was an attempt to simplify things, i think you could easily argue they failed and he wound up being just as convoluted and stupid as cable

When are they finally going to make an actual 616 child of Jean and Scott?

I enjoyed his part in AOA, but I know absolutely nothing about besides that.

Didn't Nate frick off to his own dimension since his loveless dimension blew in his face? You think they'll bs him into Krakoa?

They’ll bring him back eventually, don’t know if he’ll ever see Krakoa though, isn’t the Fall of X coming soon? They might just reset the status quo again.

Fall of X is happening, but could just be a downgrade from the current mutant centric story telling. I can still see them still keeping the ethnostate and all that since apparently writers are loving it, just not in the forefront of every damn storyline.
