I didn't make it through the Buu saga as a kid. It was just too shit. The main villain being a cutesy childlike buffoon with god-like strength got old real quick. It was almost as tedious as those episodes where they travelled that road through heaven or whatever for like 6 hours straight. Never made it past that sequence during the Cartoon Network DBZ marathons.

Yes IT CAN BE ADAPTED. Anything can be adapted well, literally anything. But the problem youll run into is anime fans do not want an adaptation they want to literally see the same story remade into a new medium. I will elaborate, for anime fans quality = accuracy but no one stops to think for a second if that aspect of the source material is even good or will function the same way in another medium. But anime fans dont care. If the original is good then copying it will be good too, right? No. They always make some 3 hour abomination that is more like a "greatest hits" than an actual story or film, critics pan it, anime fans pan it, the hardcore fans praise its "accuracy" and its forgotten in time because ultimately it appeases no one. So if you want to adapt Dragonball remove the idea from your BRAIN that 1 story arc = 1 movie. To adapt it to film you have to combine and mash together story arcs and villains, and your favorite character isnt gonna be highlighted the focus has to be 100% on goku and everyone else is there to serve a story function not recreate their badass attack/joke/gimmick from the anime.

The only way to adapt DBZ well is to give to say frick it to the powerscaling gays and have it be a classic Jackie Chan-style martial arts movie set in actual locations rather than the empty cliffsides that the manga and anime overuse.

That rule goes double for anime, because on top of literally always looking worse than its source material, people acting like anime characters in live action is always cringe and terrible. I'd do 30mins establishing kid Goku, montages Red Ribbon, & have him defeat Piccolo. Then do the tournament & Junior for the rest if the run time. After he wins, we get narration about how he's just begining his journey, & how he has much more ahead of him. While this is going I'd show a scene of him going Super Saiyan & a shadow/teaser shot of Frieza for an instant, maybe even just a scene of him doing the kiao ken, then Super Saiyan, ssj2, ssj3, red, then blue, with the background changing to reflect namek & shit as he powers up through the eras.
