Dragonar

Man, this show is fricking great.
I'm glad it finally got a full sub.

It might feel 'lighter' than most Real Robot shows, almost American at times. But I think that's actually a pretty refreshing thing about it. I just love the dynamic Kaine, Tapp and Light have going with all the little jabs and compliments.
Also goddamn THAT OP is GOOD holy shit

Currently at ep8, hope it will keep entertaining until the end.
What did you guys think of the show?

Dragonar is like a remake of Gundam ZZ.
it's not bad but not mindblowing their.

the Mad Max arc was garbage, and some enemies surviving certain-death several times made the show cheap at times and super ridiculous.
Another annoying thing is that the show spend entire episodes upgrading Dragonar, but the upgrades turn up to be only useful for 1 battle or 2 and Dragonars go again struggling against everything.

It's a good watch overall, It could be better but i wouldn't watch it again

        >/m/subs YouTube upload NEVER

Still think putting them on a burner YouTube could be worth the effort, it seems like old /m/ is beneath the notice of copyright strikes

Eh, I think it might not be worth the risk. Unlike Dougram, which another bro has put on Youtube ([...]), Dragonar has actually been licensed in a Western country, namely Italy--I got the DVDs we originally used from Yamato Video; thats why we have to retime everything for the BDs (because the Italian DVDs were slightly sped up due to being PAL). So there's probably more risk of Youtube getting on our asses than you might expect.

Hey I am the guy uploaded all of Dougram in lossless quality to YouTube and I just uploaded the first episode of Dragonar to my burner account and it is up and marked as "Partially blocked" however it is only blocked in Japan.

I am gonna use this account to upload Layzner but once I am done with that a proper torrent / release of Dragonar with the /m/ subs timed up comes out then I will make another burner account and upload it all.

(The subs are from garlock but retimed a bit for DVD and they sort of match up but not great, this is just a test video)

          Gunlord

Nice, thank you! That said we at /m/subs are actually going through and redoing GAR-LOCK's subs, correcting some of the small mistakes and generally making it look nicer (I was as most folks know hesitant to make changes to GAR-LOCK's work, but since the Blu-Rays look so nice I figured it was to pretty up the subs to match), so you could wait until then, especially since we're making sure the timing matches the new BDs too.

Hey Gunlord, yeah I can wait until then, once you do have all the subs timed to the BD and have a release ready, could you leave a comment reminding me on my Fatcatofalltime 2 account and then I will go download them and upload them to a burner account.

No, the ones at Tokyotosho are still the only ones around. Like I said though it's no big deal, because timing the .ass files for these BDs should mean that they'll work just fine for any better rips that come around in the future.

OK OP the show is like this (according to me)

Totally average but very competently executed except for one or two terribly written episodes

THEN youll reach the halfway point and there will be a very noticeably change. But get this, the writing improves noticeably during this stretch.

Then it ends and the final arc begins and get this, the shoe maintains that level of quality until the very end.

This show started off as a 5 and ended as a 7 or 8.

Stick with it, its worth it.

About to start watching this. Did some very brief skimming of a later episode, are the M-subs sped up? I noticed the opening theme seemed a lot faster and higher pitched than usual. Shame the title card is replaced with some euro custom jank too.

iirc they source from the Ita/Jp rips which run at a slightly faster speed probably because of loleurope
but yeah it's a thing but you can stop noticing, like how you stop noticing having to breath, deal with saliva in your mouth, or the fact that your tongue is just sitting there in your mouth 24/7

so are the actual episodes themselves sped up or just the openings. That kind of shit triggers my autism, like I don’t want to watch this show if it’s slightly off and now what it’s meant to sound like

tbtbh now that you mention it I never checked if it's eps or only op/ed
I can imagine both possible, like the old dub was recorded normal but then they realized they had to speed it up to match voltage issues or something, but then that only applied to the op/ed in later dvd, or no frick all that sped up is what you get
I def understand your concerns and applied tactical vodka to ignore those concerns as I went through Dragonar

    >>It might feel 'lighter' than most Real Robot shows

Majority of "real robot" shows are light toned. I have no idea why there is such a huge missunderstanding about this genre's storytelling style. Real Robots is like genre where the mecha are flawed, limited with a sense of realism. It is not a genre that focuses on tragedy.

The inner frame of that thing, at first glance, reminds me of an LBX Frame, ironically enough. My Little Panzers (in turn, really small robots like LBX or Medabots) never count as /m/ due to everyone's standards, but I wanna pass that message regardless. Too bad this is the only time we'll ever build a Dragonar inner frame, since there will be no way Bandai Spirits will pick that up again for a D-1 Custom or D-2 Custom unless there's actual demand for these things.

I think overall the show is stronger in the first half when the three boys feel like they have equal screen time to do dumb teenager things to the bad guys. Like when they humiliate the Practice squad with cunning tricks and pro wrestling moves.

That said, the show is a fascinating glimpse into the early days of the otaku obsession with the movie Commando.

You’d be hard pressed to watch an action anime or manga that didn’t sneak in a few references to Schwar-chan. Like City Hunter having a guy who looks just like him do a joke about people seeing him as John Matrix. Dragonar also lifts the entire opening dogfight from Top Gun when the boys are sent to train with navy planes so you know the staff was into American action.

Obari tweeted today since the new Top Gun movie came out that he was very inspired by seeing the original Top Gun when making Dragonar, and that without it, it probably would have been very different.

Kaine, Light, and Tapp are honestly closer to the 'daredevil pilot' archetype than most other mecha heroes from the time period I can think of. Max Jenius from Macross is of course a consummate ace, but he's also very professional and doesn't usually take unnecessary risks. In Dragonar, however, half the fun of the show is Kaine, Light, and Tapp pissing off Douglas and Rooney by doing something crazy and/or stupid, but managing to pull it off anyways, every episode.

Seems the Garlock subs from the current release work fine, but the subs from episodes 10 and onward need some retiming (probably due to different video source for those). Still it's not like you can't adjust it yourself, but I don't blame anyone for just waiting for a subbed release of this.

        Gunlord

Okay, so since this Dragonar thread is already up I'll ask here. I downloaded that torrent and took a look at it, the image definitely seems a lot nicer--I made this comparison of episode 10 of the italian DVDs and the same episode from the Tokyotosho torrent, and the BD is much much better in terms of image quality. So I'll start trying to move over all the subs my friends and I have done to the BDs, but just to make sure, these are the best ones we have, right? I'm 99.9% sure they are because I haven't seen any other BD torrents floating around but it couldnt hurt to ask, haha.

Aside from that, it should be pretty easy to move GAR-LOCK's subs over. I've said before I don't want to change too much of his work since it's a relic of old-school /m/, but for the BD release I'm going to change the fonts to the /m/subs standard so they're more readable and also add GAR-LOCK's name to the opening credits so everyone knows he did the first 9 eps, and maybe correct little spelling errors I found on close inspection. After that though I need to re-time the subs because the Italian DVDs were about 4% faster than the Japanese ones. That might be a little harder but I might be able to automate it, plus some guys have offered to help. I am a little busy this summer tho so while this will definitely go a lot faster than the original project did (lol) it might take me a couple of weeks depending on how busy my /m/subs friends are.

            Gunlord

Haha, it's not too hard, especially since like I said some friends have offered to help, though I want to make sure they're not too busy over the summer too. The only tough part like I said is retiming episode 10 onwards since those are the Italian (i.e PAL, which is 4% faster) ones, but if I can automate some of it it shouldn't be impossible.

I think they're the only BD ones around. Do you want the .ass files for all our eps alone? I've already moved the gar-lock eps over to the bds, it's episodes 10 onwards that used the PAL (European) ones and thus need to be synced. I can seed the tokyotosho torrent if you need.

Yeah I know about the 720p rip, I actually grabbed it last week from a private tracker before it made its way to public places but frankly the quality is potato even for 720p, the encode is just bad.
        That's why I'm waiting for a proper 1080p rip with non-garbage encode.
I was also squatting on almost finished Daitarn 3 ITA BD subs resync but someone beat me to it on Nyaa.
If you're already doing this by the way then I don't want to get in your way, especially since I'd rather wait for 1080p anyway.

          Gunlord

Argh, that's what I was worried about, I feared this rip wasn't very good (I only ever ripped the italian dvds waaaaay back in 2013 and I don't know much about encoding). Well as I mentioned in

I am a little busy this summer tho so while this will definitely go a lot faster than the original project did (lol) it might take me a couple of weeks depending on how busy my /m/subs friends are.

the quality of the tokyo torrent is still much much better than the Italian dvds. And the times should be the same for better rips we might get eventually, right? So it couldn't hurt to get the work done now. But in any case I can do it, it'll just take me a bit cause I'm busy IRL, but I can get a steady pace down.

            >And the times should be the same for better rips we might get eventually, right?
Assuming encoder didn't do any trimming, yes.
            >But in any case I can do it, it'll just take me a bit cause I'm busy IRL, but I can get a steady pace down.
I can help and just do preliminary sync if you want help and post my progress here.
            Have you started yet?

              Gunlord

Like I said, I already did GAR-LOCK's eps (1-9), cause those used Japanese raws to start with haha. But 10 onwards are where we started using the PAL stuff, and I haven't started on those yet. Is there any automated way to adjust for those speed differences (I forgot the exact number but IIRC the Italian is 4% faster than the Japanese or something)? If there is that would make things much easier for me, whether Aegissub has an in-built functionality that can do it or some other program.

                Oh, fantastic! That would automatically change the times for all the sub lines, right? Would you happen to know how to do that? Pardon my ignorance, I've never had to before and I wanna make sure I do it correctly ;_;

File -> Export Subs -> Transform Framerate
Anyway if you want I can start going from Ep10 onwards then while you work your way backwards from the last ep until we meet somewhere in the proverbial middle?

                Gunlord

Oh, fantastic! So I followed what you said, the 25 framerate would be the PAL and I set the output .ass file to the framerate of the Japanese BDs (which I think would be around 30), right? In that case it seems pretty easy, I think I might be able to handle this myself then. But thank you for the offer and the help!

This is how it looks like on my end. So the input framerate would be 25 because that's the PAL framerate, and the output framerate would be...now that I look at it, I think it's 23.976, right? Thats what I get when I opened up the corresponding BD in Aegisub. Does that sound right?

Those old mSubs eps10+ are exactly 25FPS yes.
As for these, no 30 is not the right number. You need to use exact decimal or you will just introduce a desync. Just open the episode in MPC (or MPV, whichever you use), right click in player and select Properties, it will show you the framerate.

                [...]

Input is the current framerate of subs, so 25.
Output is what you want, if the encode is in VBR then you select variable, if it's in CBR then you select Constant, then you just give it proper framerate down to the last decimal.

And mind you, this is not instant fix, you will most likely still need to adjust times manually after that, but it will give you a better starting point.

Thanks. Setting the output file to 23.976024 helped a bit, but it seems there's still a significant amount of manual retiming to do. I think what an anon mentioned above, if there are Japanese subs already properly timed to the BDs, that would very much help; I can't speak much Japanese but I understand just enough to know which lines would go where, and that would make this a loooot easier. Hmm...maybe I can ask Sky if she ever had some. Let me see...

I actually have some fantastic news. I asked Starseeker and she said she actually had Japanese .ass files for Dragonar! I put them onto the the BD raws and it seems they're nearly perfectly synced, that should make it a LOT easier. Out of curiosity, are you

i would be willing to be retime them for the current release, but it would be a lot easier (and a lot quicker) if i could just find some japanese subs that match up with the current blu-ray release.

? These japanese sub files seem to be exactly what you were looking for. That said I already have the BDs downloaded, the translations me and /m/subs already did, etc. etc. etc. so it might be easier for me to do this. I am a little busy IRL but I don't think anyone's in a huge hurry; using these Japanese sub files I'll probably be able to get one or two episodes done every weekday (I'm working on weekends), so if you're very busy you don't have to worry about it.

Great news then, more power to you.
                >Out of curiosity, are you
Nope, not that guy but the JP subs would be useful just the same, my offer to help still stands if you'd like, also any chance you could upload those JP subs?
                >so if you're very busy you don't have to worry about it
It's less about being busy and not wanting to step on your toes if you have it handled, I only offered originally since I kinda jumped the gun and assumed nobody did yet and then I scrolled down in the thread and noticed I did an oopsie.

Also I actually have a somewhat unrelated question, you wouldn't happen to know anyone interested in translating Space Battleship Yamato 3 would you? The only subs we have are garbo bootleg taiwanese-english or something. I have the JP DVD remasters I could supply and encode but I can't be arsed to bother with noone to translate.

Ah, thank you. In this case I should be fine to handle it, like I said I'm a little busy with a new internship but resetting the subs should be much easier with the Japanese .ass files, so I should be able to work on it pretty steadily during weekdays when I don't have work.

Noo, I'm sorry ;_; Star's busy with other stuff; I guess I could ask around but it'd be an extremely long shot, since most of all the other translators I know (I'm not one myself, I'm just a timer) are also busy.

I'd be grateful still if you could and post ITT or another Dragonar thread later, Yamato is such a classic and it drives me nuts we don't have any good subs for the third reason, or "Be Forever Yamato" movie for that matter.

Yeah, that would explain it. Like, I had to shift a few lines around repeatedly. But even so it's much much easier because even with the edits due to the original ad breaks and stuff all the lines are the proper length, so that helps quite a lot.

              [...]

), Dragonar has actually been licensed in a Western country, namely Italy--I got the DVDs we originally used from Yamato Video; thats why we have to retime everything for the BDs (because the Italian DVDs were slightly sped up due to being PAL). So there's probably more risk of Youtube getting on our asses than you might expect.

Dang, I should have thought of that. Yeah I've been retiming and replacing. That said the Jap subs match the BDs almost perfectly, just every episode I have to shift all the start times back by around 200 frames and that's enough, with some minor changes throughout the rest of the episode (largely my own personal timing preferences). As long as you do that the JP subs should be nearly perfect.

      Gunlord

Torrents of the BDs are above at Tokyotosho. It's been a while since I've posted but I have been busily working on moving the subs from the Italian PAL raws to the excellent Japanese BDs. I'm actually almost done (about 80% of the way through the eps), it's just taking me a little longer than I'd hoped. I'm even busier than I thought I'd be IRL, and aside from that, going through the old subs I found plenty of small errors and typos I'm fixing--small spelling errors in the earlier eps, minor timing fixes, that sort of thing. Nothing too significant, but IMO its worth the extra time and effort to make sure the subs for the BDs are as nice as possible.

It is a bit of a cliché that Lee Sue Min survived cuz she's a hot chick but it kinda works because she's such a hardass compared to Plato and his crew. Plus she's still the muscle of the group on account of being over six feet tall.

/m/ isn't that fast of a board, and most of the speed that does appear goes into the generals and Gundam threads.
Also people are genuinely excited at every Sunrise show that gets subs, simple as. Dragonar was one of the last golden age Sunrise real robot shows that didn't have subs IIRC, so that makes the news even more important.

      Gunlord

We're working on it. It's going a little slowly because...well...it's embarrassing to say this but I got Sekiro on Steam a few weeks ago and promptly dropped off the face of the earth lol. In my own defense I got the platinum last week (and annoying Starstar and everyone else in the /m/subs chat by pinging everyone about it).

It's a work in progress, the subs for the first 9 episodes have a lot of major issues we have to deal with, then bunch of smaller issues for rest of it.

Is there a zip for the .ass files. I only have the first 9 since they came in the old torrent. I know they arent timed and have errors well but I'd still like to have them.

We are making progress, though in general the QCing is taking more time than I'd like for the reasons mentioned above. We have to give the timing for the lines a close look because when moving subs from PAL to Japanese (NTSC), you can't just use aegissub to shift all the lines back a certain amount automatically, since PAL is slightly sped up the line lengths are different. It's easier with Japanese subs we have, but even those are iffy because they're from the TV broadcasts, so the timings are a little off because the BDs obviously don't have commercial breaks and whatnot. So it is taking a bit of time, both due to me being consumed by Sekiro but also some technical hurdles I didn't think of at first.
