You could argue it's a bit more nuanced than that. He often does things for himself, just uses the law as a backing. In a way the law is what gives him his humanity.

When? I can't really think of any time that's happened over the course of all the comics. The only one that comes to mind is when he wound up not agreeing with the anti-mutie laws in the Meg, but even then he still enforced them until he was able to help get the laws overturned.

No need to imagine, that's pretty much how it is. The vast majority of Judges (in the North Atlantic Mega-Cities, anyway) are obvious hardasses but even they regularly have Judges get in trouble for being too lenient, or being crooked, or not giving out enough Applied Violence. No one is as autistic and single-minded about the Law™ as Dredd is- except maybe one Sidney De'ath, of course.

they explain the case to you and ask if you might have any trouble being impartial. just give a reason why you won't be able to find one side accountable.

for example, a malpractice case -> "well my uncle's a doctor and works really hard, i don't think i'd be able to really find a doctor at fault as long as he did his best" or "a doctor fricked up and now it hurts every time I move my shoulder, i don't really have much sympathy for doctors"

police brutality case -> "my dad's a cop and he almost got in trouble once because someone who was obviously guilty tried to claim he was too rough during the arrest"

don't listen to the moronic advice of children who have never actually been to jury duty just parroting what others have said, or saying meme shit they think is funny like "say you're racist" or "bring a copy of mein kampf" or "i believe in jury nullification"

      t. someone who literally just got done with jury duty.

What is it with right wingers thinking we either have to have a complete authoritarian locked down police state with commando cops running around lynching jaywalkers or else it's complete and total anarchy. Like damn we're not asking for the fricking police to not do anything just stop being buttholes and help people instead of being unofficial brown shirts.

my friend all of this is because of the way our political parties have finally realized they can weaponize identity politics

it used to be pre-2000 we could all agree as americans on certain things. there was no need to look at fellow americans hatefully, people argued about things in good faith and liked their neighbors. we even had a commonly held belief of "don't talk politics and religion" specifically because we knew these things are just going to lead to fights over nothing.

unfortunately the human beings are extremely susceptible to tribal behaviors and therefore stand no chance against our cynical politicians using identity politics against us like this.

we can't just agree that things like a police officer going into the wrong apartment and murdering a young female EMT in her sleep is wrong, or that police standing between a school shooter and parents as children are murdered inside a school in Uvalde is wrong, because people have now made politics their whole identity and just can not bear to think that they might have "lost" on a single issue in a specific instance.

everyone has to go balls to the wall all the fricking time, if someone is on the right they automatically have to defend every moronic thing the right does, even if it's heinous. likewise the people on the left have to defend every moronic thing the left does.

for example I don't care about gay people, go do whatever you want. but I obviously have a problem with shit like allowing 4 year olds to transition and taking away kids from parents who wont let toddlers transition. but i'm the exception, people feel like if they say that they're somehow betraying themselves or something

i really don't know how this country is going to come back from this, i think we're just doomed to keep deteriorating because the politicians are not going to stop doing it for their own benefit

The "Dredd loving right winger" is a strawman. The chaos loving lefties are the truth. Literally just respect basic law and order you fricking homosexual.

Technically Dredd isn't a cop. Cops claim they are not a defence force. If Dredd is hunting down criminals hes not fulfilling the role of a cop, which is to do nothing until they commit a crime. He more like a state bounty hunter and committing extra judicial sentence.

well thats the premise that crime is so out of control they have done away with courts and just grant the power to pass sentences to the "cops"
But the Judges aren't cols at all, they are actually Mega cities ruling party and their form of government.

          Anonymous

The setting actually does still have courts, mostly used for civil matters, people already in the 'cubes making appeals, etc. There's an older comic I can't find at the moment where Dredd is reassigned to work there for a day and absolutely can't deal with it since all he knows is being out on the streets cracking heads.
          >they are actually Mega cities ruling party and their form of government.
You're correct here, though. The Justice Department controls Mega City One, and it has all sorts of people other than street Judges like Dredd- accountants, undercovers, paper-pushers, vehicle repairmen, medical personnel, civilian auxiliaries for things like meat wagons, etc. Some of the other Mega-Cities like the one in Britain still have regular plain-clothes detectives and such, even. It's just that "Judge Marvin files the paperwork for the new 23-cred Munceburger tax two days before deadline" is hardly interesting reading material for most people.

The whole point of police state satire as embodied in Judge Dredd is that EVERYONE is guilty of SOMETHING and that when you push that to a ludicrous "nothing matters but the law" degree the entire world ends up in prison.

Then midwits got ahold of it and it just became "h-he's a cool badass he shoots bad guys..."

Judge Dredd was originally not supposed to be satire at all, funny maybe but not political satire.
The assistant writer pushed that because he was a colossal leftwing dickhead.
The main writer fired him and came back and said ok if its going to be satirical, i'll do it the way it was intended. So he wrote the Democracy story arc, which is hilarious because it just proves that the Judges are right.

        Anonymous

Turning Dredd into a full satire was the best thing that happened to the character. Had they not done that, the character would have been forgotten long ago.

          Anonymous

but thats the point it was never meant to be that so the main writer corrected it.
Which produced the best Dredd writing. Far more nuanced than simply cops are fash maaan tier writing.
Democracy arc has the democrat terrorists nuke part of the city. upsetting the entire population and causing everyone to vote for the Judges to rule them, it explains why they came into power in the first place.

He tries to just walk away multiple times in the film. He lets that bum sitting in the doorframe off with a warning, only deciding to arrest him when he comes back half an hour later and he's still sitting in the same spot, and is immediately proven to have been right to have told the guy to move as he's crushed by the door. And more importantly he was totally content to just bust a few drug dealers and leave, Mama was the one who locked him in the building and demanded everyone in the building try to kill him. And then the most civilian deaths were when the judges were just trying to find a way outside the building and Mama starts mowing down the whole floor with miniguns like an autist. If Dredd hadn't decided to take her down then, it was only a matter of time before she would've dragged everyone into a massive gang war as she tried to expand her Slo-Mo distribution, probably ending with the entire building being blown to shit by her dead-man's switch bombs once someone or something got lucky and wasted her.
If anything, despite being fine with killing perps that did something worth it, Urban Dredd is otherwise pretty lenient compared to other Dredds.

This movie was so fricking good.
Why don't movie writers take notes on how to do a sci-fi movie in an already established piece of intellectual property.

Small scale adventure that doesn't hold the universe in the balance, and might as well be episodic. That's what we want. At the end of the day Dredd goes back to being the same Dredd he was at the beginning of the movie, because he has an entire anthology of other episodic adventures to complete.

You've got to remember that there are nowhere near enough Judges to properly police the Mega Cities. 99% of the time people get away with crimes. The idea is that the Judges are so harsh as a deterrent to would-be criminals.

Whether that system actually works is questionable and is the main theme of the story.

      Anonymous

The theme was honestly really interesting to me because it kind of parallels IRL history. Back in ancient times you could get away with literally 99% of crimes by just not being there when the law showed up, but they were super quick to brutally murder anyone they did catch. I guess the punishment has be severe enough that the average person wouldn’t want to commit the crime, but the more likely they can get away with no punishment at all, the more the ones who do get caught need to be made examples of.

It would be really cool if real life cops actually just cared about the law rather than swinging their authority around just because. I imagine cops get off on normal people having to lick their boots or the cop will make up a reason to take your ass to jail and mess your day up. Not even like straight up disrespect sets them off, but just exercising basic rights by not answering every single question about who you are and where you live when you're not even doing anything.

Dredd is kind of comforting in the fact that he doesn't give a frick about your demeanor as long as it's not illegal. Though I bet the Dredd universe has lots of laws that criminalize trivial things. My only interaction with the comics was that one where other Judges bust into his apartment to search it, basically destroy and ransack it, and he sits there quietly reading a law book.
