It really is funny how the "before" picture is pretty much this. Just a fundamentally shallow, surface level reading of the character they're trying to "corrupt". Imagine this applied to every single Warner IP they wanted to use, this show would be insufferable.

          >No, Velma and CW Powerpuff Girls were the Antichrist
It's so funny how the only people who ever talk about these anymore are the same people who beat High Guardian Spice to the ground with their hyperbole.
Also, nah, Pibby already leaks all over to other fanbases whether people want it or not and much more against their will than a bad, isolated spinoff would. Officially sanctioned crossover autism would be Hell for discussion anywhere. It's already Hell as is.

This is the main problem. Yosemite Sam wasn't harmless because he was friendly and happy, but because Bugs Bunny was a godlike reality warper and characters survived any level of violence so they could keep making jokes because the point was to be funny not have "drama and stakes." Sometimes they died and came back though if only in a later short.

To make Yosemite Sam dangerous, you don't have to change Yosemite Sam, who is a homicidal gun wielding psychopath who runs around shooting people for no reason. You can keep him exactly the same and just change the rules of the world. And then Marvin the Martian kills everyone on Earth and destroys the planet a few minutes later. I mean frick, have Bugs Bunny take out a saw, but now when he cuts up countries or states everyone is screaming as they're sucked out to sea to drown or suffer some stranger fate as the surface of the planet rearranges itself at top speeds. They mostly weren't happy and friendly characters.

Essentially, do what The Mask did in the comics where he acted like a Looney Tune, but his actions were lethal to everyone around him.

          Anonymous

Yeah I think The Mask is a great example of this, like Toon Form Judge Doom is a good example. Once "normal" "Toon Rules" don't apply for whatever reason, either to certain characters or to all or most of the world besides the violent Toon, they just naturally become horrifying nightmare beings with a massive body count by doing what they always do.

no I'm pretty sure he wasn't harmless because Bugs was smarter then him and tricked the guy constantly

This. Sam is actually brutal, but Bugs outsmarts him so much that he seems harmless. That’s the entire joke. He kills people, marries widows and plans to kill them for their money, robs banks, and is a tyrant in a few timelines. He’s already intense.

Yes Imvasion of the Bunny Snatchers was like Pibby but made by people who actually watched Looney Tunes and that was in what in 1992?

People hate Pibby because it reminds them of their cringy edgy teenager phase.

I think mostly it feels really worn out and unoriginal though you could still make something good out of overused cliches because people do it all the time.

I think what would make it annoying would be if it's just "my Mary Sue OC girlboss kicks all of your favorite characters in the nutz" like shut the frick up. Every goddamn reboot or new installment seems to have one. That is fine in fanfiction where it belongs though.

I want to say that some of the other monster designs posted looked okay with a big beard or something.

If that picture getting spammed even is concept art, it's too bad though also not fair at all to nitpick one doodle into the ground. The first picture looks way too happy and nice to be Yosemite Sam while the second one just has I guess different kinds of guns than Sam uses but otherwise looks like him? I think a cool Yosemite Sam monster might have hands or even fingers that turn into rifles, maybe his beard would, too (maybe the other model has that?) and maybe because Yosemite Sam loses his temper a lot, his face would be red and flames would be shooting out of his head. He could look zany and scary.

I couldn't even sit through more than a few minutes because it wasn't even so bad it's good, it was horrendous. It wasn't funny. Even the worst hobbyist "horror" take of a teenager playing with a camera had more chills.
I'm actually having a really hard time remembering the last time a "childhood thing but edgy" was good? They're hardly ever funny and they've been done to death to the point it's the least original thing you can pull. Wait, maybe the Venture Brothers parody of Scooby-Doo? Making them parodies of real serial killers and criminals was actually funny, by contrast, Velma was utter shit. Meanwhile I actually don't think the other Venture Brothers parodies are anything to write home about on their own but they make the characters stand on their own or the show would have become insufferable after a few episodes, "what if old cartoon but edgy" usually lasts the 1-3 minutes it takes to do a Robot Chicken sketch and that it it. And that's if it's good.

Actually that's the main problem with this idea, isn't it? Seeing a fake trailer or April Fool's jokes with Fred Flinstone and Yogi Bear as zombies really is funny. But after that, that's it, the joke is all used up after five minutes, and even if there was a "creepiness" factor (I don't think so) that would be too. You can't do a full series with multiple seasons around this. The best case would be it's strong enough to stand on its own and these are cameo Easter Eggs in the background.

Honestly yes just people remembering that 1930s etc. cartoons had ultraviolence, booze, suicide, etc. in them without (and this is the most important part!) them even making a big deal out of it! would be great. Back then a cartoon character might shoot someone or themselves in the head as easily as breathing and no one in or out of universe even batted a fricking eye.

Remember Eddie Valiant vs. Judge Doom in Roger Rabbit? Judge Doom was really a more opportunistic, but not that unusual, Toon vs. a normal guy. A sanitized modern kids character vs. the original versions of these characters would be a fight. The old cartoons are very edgy by modern standards.

All of these things seem to be made by people who have never seen those old cartoons, just sanitized kids' T-shirts merch versions of the characters.

someone on twit-for-twat had a pretty good idea goin’ on here, like what good is corruption of WB IP if there aren’t any survivors (i think this is most obvious with that “beta kid” character that’s basically bootleg robin)

(also of all the characters to pick he picks the character who’s already considered dark and twisted to begin with)

I see the logic. But I think maybe the idea is just a bit flawed, past kids want to see stuff they know turn corrupt. A sort of gateway horror that has a familiar core. The characters they want to work with just aren't that interesting to corrupt so a parody would have the same issue. Both Bugs Bunny and Rugs Rabbit having static bleeding eyes is equally dumb. You see people have success with rubber hose styled characters. I think there is inherently something weirder and more unsettling there. Or maybe it is just to do with age. However Finn and Jake or Penn and Blake but they are corrupted by evil internet juice is always gonna be eyerolling.

They will break records if they make horse show expy character

This. They even made a knock off Care Bear Pibby uses as a weapon in the short. It's likely that they would have done it to imitate shows not owned by Warner, but the idea is actually there.

It would also make more sense to use cutesy licenced character as main hero vs other licened character - that would allow for grater impact. Imagine if they really changed Pibby for like Bluey or even character from Paw patrol.

        >that would allow for grater impact.
For many it doesn't. The concept gets called edgy and cringy a lot cause it feels like a kid mashing their toys together but wanting it to be grown up. Original characters give a space to fully shape an original narrative. Letting you build in some darker element to exploit rather than reaching for an out of place anime reference. Leaning on its the character you know but dark can take some out of the scene.

I kind of like the idea that like Bunny Snatchers it's some kind of corporate nihilism as they lose everything that makes them themselves. Like a "soul vs. soulless" and they're like The Nothing from The Neverending Story.

I don't remember if they ever explained what The Nothing was but I always thought "and people with no dreams are easy to control" was something like that with the death of imagination. Sometimes IPs start to feel hollow once they've moved from something that was mainly money but also brought their artists and fans some joy into something that feels more like a joyless obligation for everyone that loses everything that made it what it was. I guess something nihilistic.

And a constant stream of a few thousand posts doesn't mean shit, especially on a platform as autistic as Twitter.

You have no core point, MY core point is that your personal Twitter trends don't mean shit, you seeing a hashtag that says "trending in US" doesn't mean it's popular because YOU are only seeing that hashtag because it's something you personally are interested in.
Again, twitter trends, online "impressions," and any other fake bullshit are meaningless when it comes to a show's actual popularity and ability to pull in a *paying* audience.

        Anonymous

Clearly it needed refinement, but it was in the initial pilot stage when we even first saw it. It's a little unfair to judge if it would've been good or not based only on what we saw so far. Things can change so dramatically from pilot to finished product.

But pretty much everybody but a handful of tryhards agrees there's a lot of potential there for something really good. A premise as simple as "a horror story with a meta-plotline about cartoons, with a Dora the Explorer type character who has to go through an 'Ash from Evil Dead' arc" is pretty solid.

Damn shame we can't have a decent thread about it because that same autisticly obsessed group of Internet Tough Guys stalk every thread and flood it with schzio shit, almost like Dodge Greenley strangled their mothers to death with his bare hands, and they're on a desperate crusade to stop him at any cost.

That entirely misses the point. The premise of having a preschool show MC going through these events is supposed to set up for a loss of innocence storyline for her to grow from - this is obvious from the trailer, and ties in with the corruption of characters from known childhood cartoons. What would the character arc even be if it was a grown person who was already acquainted with violence and loss?
            >inb4 they just kill the cartoon characters and focus on corruption lore

OP is a sentence that I'm supposed to read and then gather the meaning from. I can assume OP is making fun of the "dark and edgy" sentence when showing a picture of Sam, and then a very slightly more edgy picture of Sam that's honestly more in character for him, but that'd just be an assumption.

Why be so esoteric about it? When I'm talking about a cartoon I don't like, I just say "The steven universe characters are all shit heads and it makes watching the show difficult.

It likely would end up having comedy in the final product. You need something to pad it out. It's how Don't Hug Me I'm Scared was able to be stretched into proper episode runtimes when it became a show.

      1. "Old cartoon characters but edgy" has been way overdone for decades. I don't think that makes this bad, but it does mean it would need to put in work to stand out. For both comedy and drama, people have mentioned Epic Mickey, Kingdom Hearts, Drawn Together, Robot Chicken, Family Guy cutaway gags, Velma, Loonatics Unleashed, Bendy and the Ink Machine, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, etc., etc. Some have been good, some bad.

      2. Old Looney Tunes cartoons were so violent and edgy they are now censored because violence and guns and shit bad etc. So I think that's why "edgy Yosemite Sam" is making the rounds as a little weird, his "uncorrupted" version is the OOC one.

      3. Pibby as an OC/new character and the show is about her killing everyone's favorite cartoon characters does feel a bit goofy. I feel like we all wrote a Mary Sue fanfiction with this plot but noticed that reading other people's Mary Sue fanfictions were less fun.

Otherwise sure it could be good.

I think both Pibby's appeal + cringe is that as soon as you turn, I don't know, 8-12 years old and learn to use photos hope, you write a creepypasta with Squidward committing suicide, play with a pic to make his eyes look black and pixellated, and then laugh for 5 hours because LOL CARTOON BUT EDGY.

Then you go to post it and...5 million other kids have ALREADY posted a story about Squidward Commits Suicide with a pixelated thumbnail of Squidward with black eyes.

Then you go rewatch some old episodes of SpongBob Squarepants and oh yeah the show itself already had ultragore in episodes huh.

So it's nostalgia for a simpler time because sure, everyone did this as a kid, and so did the cartoon shows that we watched as kids.

But also. EVERYONE did this. As a KID.

Is it? The entire premise is "The evils of the internet and meme culture ruin and corrupt the innocent, iconic and recognizable corporately sanctioned depictions of IPs, and Pibby must fight it to save the cartoons." I cannot imagine anything more globohomosexual than finger wagging about meme culture, especially using characters that should have long been in the public domain.

Probably people trying to be on the "right side" of a backlash so they don't get made fun of for liking something "cringe." But it's getting to a point where it's so absurd and dramatic that Pibby-hate might become the new "cringe." and the merry-go-round of internet bullshit will keep spitting us all up and shitting us out, making us dumb and gay.

Also notorious baitposters like guy jumped in on it. So I imagine part of it is literally just bait.

There could be a million Pibby fans, and I would still say it sucks.

People compare it to Kingdom Hearts often, and for good reason. The only thing I'd change about Pibby is that despite getting an eyepatch and chainsaws or whatever, she'd still be a goofy little kid when everything's done. Maybe I'd even make the show more of a comedy.

Looking around, outside of Cinemaphile, by far the most common complaint seems to be that if you were online in the 2000s and 2010s, you saw little kids everywhere making exactly this sorta stuff so it feels "creatively bankrupt" to try to make it a real show instead of a joke trailer or something.

I'm not saying that I agree, but what's your response to this popular criticism? I think the point critics elsewhere are making is that this is too much of a cliche, and something amateurs, and children, tended to do, so they think it's either tired or maybe also that it feels kind of dumb.

        >I'm not saying that I agree, but what's your response to this popular criticism?
Naturally, my response is that nothing's new, and instead its up to the people using something common to make something unique. Look at Street Fighter and Tekken for example. If you let your creative ideas start with "I'm going to be BRAND NEW"; you'll never make anything since you really can't be "brand new" anymore.

          >Look at Street Fighter and Tekken for example
That seems like a really bad example and if anything shows the issue with Pibby. SF transformed the fighting game genre, it set standards and although seems stereotypical now really set what those were. Ryu is a stereotype but has become the cornerstone of the stereotype. Tekken wasn't so much a response to SF as it was Virtua Fighter. Along with it they set standards for a sub genre, and you can see the designs evolving into more modern tropes.

Pibby fails at all of these. Its late to the party in concept, isn't evolving the idea and doesn't even seem to have that deep an interest in the shows it wants to mess with. The most it seems to be offering is a straight forward zombie apocalypse normal person has to become a badass survivor. I notice most seem to jump back to this and the story could've been so cool. But 99% of fan discussion is what if cartoon character had a fricked up face. When it isn't even doing it that well. Constant let them be unoriginal they'll get to the good part soon probably didn't help the show's pitch.

The difference is that those things lacked any real fricking story. Pibby has a real protagonist with a plot and conflict to go with it. What can you tell me about the protagonists of Sonic exe or Dead Bart? What compeling conflict or character trait did they have? Nothing. They don't really exist and those things consisted of a basic narration about spooky imagery. Pibby is leagues more creative for at least trying to form a coherent story with actual characters like Pubby herself and her two companions.

I think these are fair responses.

Pibby would have been held rightly to a higher standard than anything made by kids, hobbyists, fans as a professional production. Maybe it would have met and far surpassed them.

I think skepticism is fair since as mentioned some people think if you have an actor put on a Winnie the Pooh costume and stab someone while shouting "Frick!" that's hilarious and you're done, but it's really only enough for a joke trailer or clip. Maybe we'll never know if they could have fleshed this out into a whole story.

What the frick is compelling about Pibby?
          >uhh, preschool character has to kill DXDX
DHMIS already did this ten times better, the idea of an innocent character being thrust into mature situations isn't anything new, see The Long Long Holiday (Historical Fiction Drama), Vermin (Black Comedy), and Steven Universe (adventure show), even if I don't care for it. These are all better examples because they wrote characters who happened to be innocent, rather than a flat character who's only characteristic is "innocent", and thus the growth would be inorganic because the character has absolutely no other interests than
          >le learning hurr durr, I'm a dora knockoff
Nothing about Pibby as a character is compelling unless you've never consumed any media in your life.

            >unless you've never consumed any media in your life.
In all fairness it is fine to have a gateway show. It is obvious a lot of people who get very excited about the concept and defend it are fairly young. However I do absolutely see something like this gaining a very obnoxious adult fan base. Who would become very demanding about everything.

            >What the frick is compelling about Pibby?
You're missing the point that Pibby has an actual character. By compelling, I mean there is something that is actually there to know and potentially get attached to. People who keep comparing Pibby to old creepypasta fail to realize that the ones based on cartoons all sucked for being the same boring narrations of shocking content. There is no character arcs or plot to them. This what makes Pibby more unique in comparison, which is the whole point of my argument. Whether or not you personally find Pibby herself compelling is subjective. After all, the show does not actually exist yet. From what we can see in the pitch bible they did have an arc for her. Just because DHMIS did a similar concept doesn't mean others can't do it. It's not like originality exists that much. Puppets in messed up situations have been done since Meet the Feebles. Candle Cove is also a thing that exists concerning puppets and horror.

              >You're missing the point that Pibby has an actual character
Don't pretend that most of the fan's focus isn't but what if this show's characters got all fricked up. Seeing as it doesn't actually exist Pibby doesn't actually have the characters or arcs you're hyping up. It has a few fairly generic ideas and some pretty awful ones like the black stuff is internet culture. Could be great or awful. Nothing inherently mind blowing. Having story doesn't make it unique. If this story is oh so great it shouldn't need to lean on the crossover elements. But every single thing used to hype it up has been the crossover.

I feel like you're just proving his point. Falling back on well nothing is original. Sorry but no you can take a unique approach to old ideas.

The usual reason for that format is immersion which is supposed to add to the creepiness. The ultimate issue with this is trying to marry the standard format with the creepypasta format, in one you lose some of the immersion the conceit that "this is really happening" and the other you're not really doing character well. I think that's anon's point, Pibby having a character doesn't matter if she seems to be a pretty weak cliche.

      Anonymous

I don't necessarily hate Pibby, I just find the concept really dull. It's been done a million times before at the most fundamental level (Cute character faces evil) and even at the more specific level (Cute character faces evil versions of established cartoon characters). People bring up Deviantart a lot in these threads and they're right, it sincerely feels like the kind of thing you'd see on Deviantart with Sigmario and the like. It's like the very first thing your brain jumps to when you think "What if I wanted to take a character, but make it edgy for adults?" There's nothing to actually make the concept work beyond a special, it'd get boring really fast. Additionally if the Yosemite Sam sketches are anything to go by the creator doesn't seem to fundamentally understand some of the characters he's working with, Yosemite Sam was always a gun-shooting butthole and his uncorrupted version ironically looks like some other character wearing Yosemite Sam's skin.

Now the people that bend over backwards to defend the concept, those people I find extremely annoying because it seems like they're either insanely young, media illiterate, or are willingly ignoring how many people are telling them this is just an old concept that doesn't have any legs.

        Anonymous

Yeah I definitely wouldn't watch this TO see Looney Tunes or Yosemite Sam or any of these cartoon characters. Yosemite Sam does look out of character before he's corrupted.

If it's just Pibby fighting generic alien glitch zombie monsters that look like Zim, Johnny Bravo, Samurai Jack, Finn & Jake, etc. that's a funny detail I guess but it doesn't provide enough to tune in past maybe a special. Kingdom Hearts was less superficial about the mea crossover, it wasn't just the new characters grinding generic Heartless that happened to look like some Disney characters which is what this looks like.

I don't think that hypothetical Kingdom Hearts would be bad necessarily but the idea that it's a tie in is almost false advertising.

          Anonymous

Sorry wasn't trying to say they got the IP permission for IZ, AT, etc. and can't even remember what they would try for except "wouldn't bother with Disney presumably" just the "watch this OC kill things that look like all your favorite cartoon characters." I mean, okay.

I remember how Villainous had little bits of Black Hat dunking on various cartoon villains. That was funny, but some people wanted to see him actually go from show to show beating up all the cartoon villains, and that'd probably make me hate the character as an OC power fantasy Mary Sue thing.

So say Pibby beats the shit out of Bugs Bunny and kills him the way any zombie movie protagonist would kill any zombie. That's just Michonne from The Walking Dead killing some Walkers but it has a funny cartoon skin/mod on it.

That's because it was animated to really feel like a classic Looney Tunes short and understood how the characters acted, so the weird replacement characters stood out even more. It feels right in line with Chuck Jones era Looney Tunes outside of their designs so it makes them feel especially out of place. Frick they even got the orchestral music down to a T.

"Cartoon... but dark!" is the most normalgay thing possible. It's like how at the end of Dora the Explorer when she asked kids what their favorite part of the episode was, how they'd always come up with depraved shit in response. That's the whole premise of this show. Kids saying "I liked it when Swiper pulled out a gun and shot Boots!" to Dora at the end of an episode.

Like instead of Sam is a crazy monster, and sort of real looking guns means everyone dies with blood and guts. It instead still work on cartoon logic. The conflict has escalated to an actual war but a very silly one with maybe a hint things are going to get distorted if this keeps up. Maybe play into the idea of a cartoon being used for some other purpose like propaganda. They need help solving it so the episode can end.

I feel like Pibby's fanbase online is, and I'm not trying to make a mocking joke here, but the sort of 8-13 year old kid set that is unironically into creepypastas and sees them as deep and moody instead of the sort of goofy ironic enjoyment that older people looking back fondly on that kid phase get from them.

I just don't think that phase lasts beyond the preteen years for the vast majority of people, and even then, I wonder how big of a crowd that is, especially these days? Decades ago, it seemed like people who had a "goth or emo" preteen phase liked that unironically, but that wasn't everyone. But I don't know. I just wonder how much a target audience for a serious take on this really is.

I think we will most likely never know now but it's kind of like, that's what was getting Pibby all of the attention. Does that make it the carrot that pulls people in to a good series? Or is there nothing there and this is one of those things where a small handful of related clips get millions of views on YouTube, but nobody watches the show or makes it otherwise...monetization friendly? It's really not worth the money to get all of these characters and make a full series if all you get is five clips that get as many views as Amanda's soap cutting videos or someone's dog vomiting

I mean worst of all it IS actually a great show but all people care about is "lOlOL CrEepYpAsTa" for one whole fricking week as a crazy popular meme that makes absolutely NO fricking money and is then utterly forgotten reminding people that western animation is a lost cause and so is the internet beyond linking everything to an Amazon product order page

If your creation, be it a comic, animated series, novel or any other medium in the entertainment industry, requires or borrows famous foreign characters or IPs, then your project is doomed to failure before it even born.
It happened several times with pokemon comics that brats use to put their OCs on just to have Daddy Nintendo CAD their sorry buttholes.
damn, it's already a pain in the ass to even "borrow" and use other people's ocs from other artists if the project administration is shit, more than likely it's hell trying to do that with different companies, just to later have your project falling apart or is canceled mid-life since the other parties chose not to continue with the plot

my advice? Create your own fricking OCs, you can do plagiarism disguised as satire and call it a day

Hey, moron, they were never going to use properties outside of Warner.
      >Inb4 SpongeBob and Rocko were in it.
Just their environmental aesthetic. They were definitely going to use parodies because they created a bootleg Care Bear for the short instead of actually using one for parody. Even the villain cat lady is a stand in for Disney villains like Cruella. They clearly intended to blend OCs and established characters like Disney did with Wreck It Ralph. Don't get me wrong the usage of Warner characters is likely to be hassle. Companies can be bureaucratic as frick in them. Does anyone have the screen cap of Maxwell Atoms explaining how ridiculous it was to use Fred Flintstone in Billy and Mandy despite both properties owned by Warner?

I hated the generic zombie-like trope but this is like the complete polar opposite of that and I hate even it more because it starts to feel like it came from vizziepop's overdesigned hell and demolishes the characters even more

Fan art galleries are gonna get flooded even more with this nonsense.

      Anonymous

I don't know, I don't HATE this. At least it incorporates the character design a bit, like being a centipede with multiple backpacks and two swords on the back like insect parts. There's a kind of concept.

I feel like if this was just fan art of someone making a fun thing this would be fine. Or if this was from an episode of Adventure Time and Finn had a dream about insect versions of all of them. That would be fine.

I'm not sure what's bothering me. I think this all just feels too much like Kingdom Hearts or Epic Mickey but without any interest in or knowledge of the IPs or the characters at all. I mean it's just "Finn but creepy" and could have been made by someone who has only seen his design. It's not like it's Ice Finn or something that reflects Finn's fears or AT lore.

I understand that would require a few lines of exposition, but maybe that's the thing. The known characters look like just cannon fodder to the point that actually why bother even using them.

I actually watched some of that shitty Winnie the Pooh horror movie. There was absolutely nothing about it that the people making the movie couldn't have gotten from a one paragraph vague description of Winnie the Pooh. I doubt they'd ever seen a part of any Winnie the Pooh cartoon much less read anything. Slapping the brand name on a generic horror film was all they did. It wasn't even as much fun as fanfiction or other organic fan projects.

      This looks the same.

At least creepypastas often felt like there were written by actual fans.

Of course Blood and Honey was a slapdash cashgrab meant to beat everyone to the punch of gory Pooh since any edgy writer with common sense would wait for Tigger to lapse in 2024.

      Anonymous

The design itself isn't bad but it has nothing to do with the character on any metaphorical level. Even noodle arms criticisms don't gel with this because noodles are serpents or eels, not centipedes. Calling it a worm doesn't make it a worm when its obviously a centipede

      Anonymous

In mere effort alone, it's fine, better even.
But on every other front this is even more terrible than going basic, in this form you have to get more creative and think through and then you realize that unless it makes sense to the character's world to take this different form it begins to show that you are butchering them from what makes them special and unique in the first place.
You have to work smarter not harder, specially with characters people love with their whole hearts.

Some of it is just the juxtaposition of Finn and Jake being supposedly dead, their visages distorted. They're something to hide from.

It might seem infantile but its the love of these characters that makes it strange, unnerving at least. Finn is the homie, and now his corpse is hunting another character.

here's some more interesting ones, the idea of 'Flintstones walk their cars = Flintstones become the car' is at least a little bit interesting and it's something with actual relevance to the character. The Jake design is cool too
