The point of a media server is to be a media server. What good would be an email server you can only reach from your desktop? Or a cloud provider that charges you extra if you want to access it from another IP?

The point is that you're able to use your media library from anywhere. That might be your tablet on the home network or your phone in a hotel room from somewhere else.

It's just shilling, trolling, and/or contratianism. The only time this meme is true is if you're pulling out the HDMI cable to plug your piece of shit chrome book in so that you can watch a streaming site that you found on Yandex and every 20 minutes you have to switch the server because it stopped loading.
If you're a chad with an airgapped home media server and an extensive library of torrented kino (aka everything you can possibly find a torrent of since you have the disk space and you might as well go nuts) she will probably make you cum in her multiple times before the film is over

1080p or you can convert to lower or higher if you want to. They also usually have 4k sections if that's what you want.

cheers that answers it a bit better. like the other anon said 1080p can look like ass still. 4k movies are tough, it can either be an upload speed bottleneck, download speed bottleneck, CPU bottleneck on server, CPU bottleneck on device you are trying to play it on, you trying to play it over wifi and so on, you have to have a better than average setup for it

      Transcoding could help

      Anonymous

4k is a bit of a nightmare. 9/10 it's a problem with the player not supporting something in the 4k source file. The Plex windows client is most reliable and native TV apps are second best. Apple TV app also pretty good. Browser or androidor old TV, forget it. Truehd audio seems to be one common format in 4k content that screws up players all the time. Use the dashboard now playing screen to diagnose if anything is being transcoded, and understand the difference between direct play and direct stream.
I have it working most of the time across my home network but I've given up sharing out 4k content to friends because the amount of support they need to get it working is a nightmare.

I like Plex but anything above 720p stutters when i stream from my PC to my TV over my local WiFi network, pretty sure it's not my PC or TV that is the bottleneck since CPU/GPU usage while streaming is pitiful, and my TV never had problems streaming Netflix in 4k

          Anonymous

It really depends on the quality of the wiring in your house, what you have them plugged into, and if they're on the same circuit phase.
They work great in my house and while they're not as fast as my home wifi, they're definitely more stable. OTOH, they're a mixed bag when used at my parents' house and perform like shit when they have certain lights on.

I use plex to stream stuff I downloaded from the bay or whatnot to my TV because it's more convenient and faster than copying to USB HDD, and if there is some compatibility issue (because Samsung is moronic) it will also reencode it on the fly.
And since I'm not a native speaker I like having english subtitles, Plex handles that as well.

          jellyfin is a server
you install it on your NAS (or, wherever your media is actually stored)
you only need a client on your firestick
and it doesn't need to be jellyfin itself
kodi can be pointed at a jellyfin server
or even at a plain fileshare on your LAN

              a) no jellyfin app for your device (or, more likely, a buggy jellyfin app for your device)
              b) you prefer kodi, because of familiarity or features lacking in the jellyfin app (eg im quite fond of using the kore app on my phone, lets me use it as a remote to control the kodi instance on my TV)

Hm. I just use the upnp feature on kodi to stream my shit and it works well enough. Would I have any benefit switching to jellyfin through kodi?

I did use the official jellyfin app for a while, but yeah, it was buggy as frick and I couldn't take it.

                probably not
jellyfin would allow you to transcode your shit
or to access it through the internet
for purely local media consumption, no need for it

Use what suits your needs mate. The only benefit of jellyfin is a pretty interface to catalogue your movies and share it with other people. If you can happily stream stuff using things like DLNA or just accessing a file share, leave it at that. I use it mainly out of autism to mess around with my server and to let my dad use it so he doesn't have to pay for shitty streaming platforms.

Not tried it with a firestick so can't advise pal.

You can run it on Windows too anon, it's easier to setup on there than on a Linux virtual machine, I only did it that way to I can provision it in an autistic way.

I actually fricked the hottest girl I've ever fricked right after watching a movie on my Plex back in college. I mean she had no clue wtf it was or even cared but I still had it.

Can anyone explain the difference between plex and kodi with add-ons, when kodi is free and downloads boxcovers, plot, and cast information for all your films?

No wonder you homosexuals have problems with women.

Except the interface is actually way better than any streaming service when you look at all the features it has compared to them

      >he fell for the QLED meme
      shoulda bought oled, homosexual

      joking aside, setup an HTPC
a raspi 4 with libreELEC will do for cheap
nvidia shield would be an intermediate solution (but has ads on the interface...)
ideally you should get a proper PC.
one of those used corporate mini PCs will do, as long as the intel cpu is relatively modern (say, 8th gen or newer)
and if you go all out and use something with a discrete gpu, you can use mpv shaders to get state of the art upscaling for your non-4k content.

Or just use the Plex app and let stuff reencode on the fly if your CPU is good enough, I assume your files aren't working because there is no DTS on Samsung TVs

Samsung makes the worst tv os, next to LG. I bought a stolen roku ultra for 20 bucks and it's better than any built in os

i use plex + channels DVR

the latter (pic related) allows me to control an HDhomerun to record shows as well as import my regular media library. The main perk, and the only reason I pay $8 a month for this shit is because it lets me make comfy "virtual channels" that show up as if it was a real channel, so I have it set up with rules to just work automatically. For instance the Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy channels play all episodes I have recorded in order but the DVR only keeps hte last 20 episodes so there's no little maintenance

I then record Hallmark movies and stuff for my sister and mom, plus random kids shows for my niece who came to Canada once and liked some kids show that isn't available in Australia. They watch it on my plex.

some of my movie channels, I made like 100 of them, most are just completely random but some are themed

my only real complaint is that it's not as slick as recognizing files as Plex is, for instance plex will get it with shit filenames like "potccotbc-1080p" is the first Pirates of the Carribean movie but Channels DVR needs the filename to be more literal as well as include the year, probably for the best to eliminate those shitty filenames from my collection though

just a PSA for all those who have issues with plex/jellyfin/whatever recognising their collections

use radarr/sonarr to download new stuff
and use the manual import feature for what you already have
they will autorename stuff (is configurable, but default should be easy for plex/jellyfin to recognize)

what is that one pirate streaming service that emulates regular tv (like random episodes of shows and whatnot)? That's all you need
