Watched a lot of older cartoons from the 90's and even the early 2000's recently, they got a lot more use of silence and build-up. Nowadays humor doesn't include the anticipation of a joke, it just states the joke as if throwing it onto us is a comic act itself.

All the new cartoons nowadays dont understand the use of silence or pauses, its like they are trying to fill every second with noise.

That's so accurate, that's one of the reasons why I call modern SpongeBob unwatchable, literally every single second at least one character is making some sort of vocal sound and it's so damn grating.

Its not just cartoons, its all media. Older movies too used to have a lot of slow panning shots of cities or environments or anything and generally just felt slower. There would be a lot of this showmanship, like they were trying to show off all these various things like objects, gadgets, or scenery, or effects, or emotions, etc. to the audience that'll make you actually want to own those things or go to those places.

Now everything feels like a Bay movie, always moving fast and having a lot of effects just for the sake of it. As if they're trying to hide the obviously bad CGI if they just make everything move fast. Also pic related isn't what I entirely mean, I just like posting Beetlejuice.

Kids literally cannot focus otherwise. Thanks to the punchy short form video format. Even YouTube gaming videos which used to have long 30-40 minute formats have switched to chopped up and HEAVILY edited 10 minute formats. The rest is cute animals, pop culture, silly dances and the newest memes. Content gets made literal minutes after big news drops or a new trend hits the scene.
You can't compete with that kind of output it doesn't matter how much money you have. A billion people are trendmaxxing and algorithmmaxxing all at once hoping to make a few bucks from daddy youtube theyre technically content slaves

I was thinking about this, and for some reason 'The Dover Boys' came to mind. Whilst it's frenetic in a classic Chuck Jones style there's still a lot of pauses and beats that really sell the humour. The bit where Dan Backslide steals the car in particular is a good example:

      >Dan exits the bar, slight buildup of music as he looks offscreen.
      >Camera follows Dan as he goes up to a car, takes a second to look at it.
      >"A runabout"
      >Beat
      >"I'LL STEAL IT, NO-ONE WILL EVER KNOW!"

Even though it's only 10 seconds long most of it is build-up to the gag, it works in the same manner as dramatic tension where the audience has an idea of what the outcome will be but they don't know how it will land. That beat in particular is crucial for selling the humour, there's no joke per say; it's just Mel Blanc doing a funny voice, BUT that little pause just sells the delivery and releases the little bit of tension that was built up.

cause APC will probably end up being worse than this still. this will be poorly animated and boring. APC was aggressively unfunny and just too tryhard for the most part. ren seeks help is the only decent episode.

I had the exact same experience, didn't watch any more episodes after watching the first time it aired until recently. It was even worse because because my whole family loved old R&S and gathered around to watch. Uncomfortable and disappointing experience. The episode they started with (Onward and Upward) seems like the worst choice possible. Other episodes seem like a big step up so far.

Eh Fire Dogs 2 was the only one I liked mostly for the fact Ralph Bakshi was in it. NBF was basically more softcore porn than comedy with the comedy just being Ren getting fricked and fricked up by the hairy ape of a lifeguard.

What? At this point why would he even bother? Billy has gone on to have a lifelong successful career. John...hasn't done dick since he got fired from Ren and Stimpy. I don't know how to break it to you but you're just revealing how worldly your concerns are. I care about other people, that's the whole reason why I care about the Ren and Stimpy show because it is such a good portion of friendship. If you care about working on cartoons instead of people, that is why you don't like John.

      Anonymous

He took over for Ren's voice when John was kicked out the 1st time. He's a better Ren then John is as Stimpy. John's Stimpy sucks, and his voice got too low to do Ren's voice well. Equally, West did all the screams the show is known for. You can hear John struggle to do half the shit West was good at.

"getting back at John" isn't the end goal, so much as just doing a good job with characters he likes to play as. The Ren we heard sounds like West because he's done both characters before. John's Ren is still better than West's Ren in the 1st season. Only problem is John's voice got lower.

        Anonymous

Gonna reply to myself because West's main problem in most of his OTHER work, is because John pushed/abused him to give some great performances. With John gone, you can hear a lot of Stimpy's voice just get commercial and mid range sounding.

West does great stuff, but thinking about some of his performances, if he doesn't have to, he won't push it. He sticks to a comfortable range because the voice director will love his first take. John's strict control over West's voice made great work, but hypocritical when you listen to the voice work in APC. It's pretty piss poor in that series.

It's not a unique story and they're not adding any unique twist to it and the original series never dated itself so hard in the decade it aired in. Plus it seems every reboot is trying to remind you its modern (even Futurama had a le apps are bad episode when it was first revived), why bring back a show if you have nothing new to add to the table?

The animation that we've seen is extremely inconsistent. The scene where Ren is in the dark swatting away cables looked extremely good. The log commercial clip was noticeably worse but still somewhat decent, kinda like the later episodes of Looney Tunes Cartoons. But then you have that one scene where Stimpy is like standing up or something and it looks fricking horrible, very obvious tweening and it looks like shit. I'm hoping (coping) that the shittier animation is just unfinished or something. I have hopes for this thing, it has potential.

History repeats, The New Adventures of Beany and Cecil part 2
      >They didn’t let the artists write the stories this time around. Instead they had this total hack Chuck Lorre who didn’t care about cartoons, didn’t understand cartoons, couldn’t write, wasn’t funny, just a mean guy. They put him in charge of the stories. He wrote scripts instead of putting them on storyboards and he just was a nightmare to work with. He hated the cartoonists. He was just there for political reasons. Really all he wanted to do was score the music on his Cassio. Because they pay you a lot more to do the music than any other job because you get royalties and stuff.

      >He made a deal with the network saying, “The only way I’m going to be in charge of the stories is if you give me the music contract.” And the music was completely awful. The whole thing turned into a political nightmare. There was too many people at the top and the network executives hated us. They hated the artists, they hated the Clampett family and the only person they liked was Chuck Lorre, who was making life miserable for everybody.

This sounds the exact same as the Animaniacs reboot from what I heard about it in terms of being:
      1. Animaniacs 2020 was all about the writers and they kept shooting storyboard additions down
      2. That reboot’s writers also hadn’t watched the original show though the other people working on the reboot had but their contributions didn’t matter

Adult Party Cartoon had problems but it was still somewhat good although not on the level like Season 1-2 Ren and Stimpy. Either way, it's still more iconic than Games Animations Ren and Stimpy.

because they hate cartoons, thats why.

      >Why do millenials butcher the things they grew up with?
Because they hate white men and almost all of the people who created those cartoons were that demographic. Brownoids/Femoids can’t create art, they can only destroy it. That’s why all of the older R&S staff left the reboot, because they were treated like shit by the new diverse writing staff that will cram as many “Member’ Berries” and shitty celebrity cameos as possible.

Best part is, Twitter will praise it because they hate John with a passion. Even though despite being a horrible person, he was correct on a lot of his sentiment. Like many other industries, DEI damaged animation significantly and it will probably never recover.

It will crash like every other industry hit by DIE and be replaced by people willing to supply the demand for good products.

Twitter will pretend to like it, eventually stop watching because they'll get bored on dunking on spumgays and they don't actually like it and it will be forgotten and cancelled after 2 seasons.

There's also a small chance that it actually will be so bad that everyone will hate it, animation politics aside. But I doubt it.
