They where trying to recontextualize the story in a way American children could understand.Choral music in America is associated with black gospel so they made the muses gospel singers, Hero cults were translated to professional sports super stars, a wealthy opulent polis was made in to Vegas etc...
This, Hunchback, and Tarzan are the only good Disney movies because they're about cool dudes. Everything is waifubait garbage or specifically just for girls.
