I'm reading Chuck Klosterman's book about The Nineties (which is more about the cultural memory of the Nineties in retrospect and the psychology of the time) and he talks about how the apex of the VCR and video rental store led to a new way for how movies were consumed and how it affected filmmaking. Essentially, someone like Tarantino or Kevin Smith could and did watch so much stuff that they essentially constructed a reality based on how they absorbed movies and then transmitted that through their films.
Dumbing of Age is like a much more moronic version of that. It's a blend of 80s cartoons and Willis' childhood issues with a healthy sprinkling of The Mary Sue presented to people whose own worldview is colored solely by mass media nerd culture.
The kind of people that unironically think Willis' writing is good must have terrible standards even for fiction.
