This bad boi turns 40 this year
How has it aged? Frankly I know we all love to dunk on dunc for various reasons, but my personal belief in lynch supremacy lies solely in the casting. The og cast actually felt like they were acting and not just reading lines in costume. The biggest notable examples of this are Gurney and Thufir.
I don't think it's a good movie, and neither does David Lynch
The both of you happen to be wrong. Creators incorrectly evaluate their own works all the time, as they're too close to them.
ACKtually
Dino de Laurentis took Lynch's material, locked Lynch out of the editing suite and edited it together to make the film you see today.
there are rumors of Lynch's 5 hour cut that made Dino panic as he wanted a shorter movie that everyone would love like they did star wars.
Dune is not really lynch's film at all. final cut means a lot
>Dino de Laurentis took Lynch's material, locked Lynch out of the editing suite and edited it together to make the film you see today.
>(muffled through door) WHO THE FRICK GIVES A SHIT HOW LONG A MOVIE IS
>rumors of Lynch's 5 hour cut
There never was a "Lynch cut", much less a five hour one.
The five hour thing, when it gets brought up, refers to the alledged five hours of (unique) footage that Lynch supposedly filmed. It is true though that Lynch would probably have kept more material and thus produced a longer film - but all of that is hypothetical.
It's really not hypothetical since there's a 4 hour fan cut pieced together from footage used in different official cuts and it's not like it's bloated with useless footage. Lynch's own cut would have been as long or longer.
>it's not like it's bloated with useless footage
It is.
>Lynch's own cut would have been as long or longer.
Lynch's cut would have been way more focused than the ridiculous fanedit, which literally cut out NOTHING of what was available to it.
If you want to know how Lynch works (in terms of how much he films vs. what makes it in the final film), look up the cut scenes that have been released for Fire Walk With Me. And those aren't even all of them (for example, a few unreleased ones ended up being used for Twin Peaks: The Return).
Lynch's intended cut was 3 hours, the studio told him to frick off when he didn't feel it was possible to deliver a 2 hour cut
so the studio got
LYNCHED?
Sounds more like Lynch got Lynched by the studio
You're not making any sense.
Lynch's best movie
Nah. I'd personally say it's not his worst, but it's also far from his best.
Either way, it's leagues better than anything Villeneuve ever shat out.
>it's leagues better than anything Villeneuve ever shat out.
Well we can at least agree on that
i think it's a great movie and don't care what Lynch thinks of it, rewatched it many times and it's a comfy acid trip every time
Not a good movie but still much more memorable and visually appealing than Villanova’s version. It’s proof that Lynch is an actual artist in comparison to Denis who is a soulless studio hack with awful taste.
>visually appealing
No way. DV movie has a striking aesthetic but the aesthetic itself is going for a dull minimalistic type of thing.
It feels more real where lynch version feels fantastical.
>lynch version feels fantastical
Ironic as lynch had the vision of making things more practical
But then again dune is meant to be a mix of science fiction and fantasy
No, it's just science fiction. No fantasy involved.
>No fantasy involved.
>Paul ingests spice and gains psychic powers
>sci-fi
Ok anon
>It feels more real
Oh, look, someone fell for the "bad lighting and low constrast == realist" meme.
I am thinking more of the cold war russian industrial minimalistic architecture, the lack of color in the movie and entire feeling of oppression.
It might actually be something he does in the next movie and increase the color in the movie when the fremens sieches are introduced..
All the rooms in the movie are large rooms, doesnt feel cozy at all, everything is grand but empty.
You're severely overestimating Dennis Vileneuf and his sense of visual style. He reason DUNC looks bland and unimaginative is because he is bland and unimaginative. Case in point: Burkas and bagpipes.
The reason stuff is badly lit and the colour grading is completely desaturated is simply that he's a complete hack who doesn't know shit about the technicalities of filmmaking. That's also why DUNC has some of the worst cinematograhy I've seen in recent film (including direct-to-streaming B-movie trash).
>All the rooms in the movie are large rooms, doesnt feel cozy at all, everything is grand but empty
Villeneuve is a one trick pony
This was what i was trying to get at with the aesthetics and how it might change in the second movie as paul becomes the muahadib and in the fremens seeches.
As a comparison there may be more enclosed smaller areas and color to the movie. We will see.
If there is, it was clearly the directors vision.
>how it might change in the second movie
>We will see.
Trailers are out. Even a whole scene has been released as a teaser. You can already see that nothing has changed and things still look like shit.
Everything looks like a government building from the 80s
>Everything looks like a government building from the 80s
see
>I am thinking more of the cold war russian industrial minimalistic architecture
Then you are moron
>one trick pony
What's his pony's name?
>What's his pony's name?
"Incompetence".
Except Dune is supposed to be a neo-feudalist world and everything belonging to the ruling class should be a piece of art worth more than a commoner could ever make in ten lifetimes, everything should be tacky and covered in gold and israeliteels and ivory and on Arrakis, lacquered wood.
But We've seen House Atreides and their lavish interiors and comfy rooms. It's only when they got to Arrakis that everything became opressive and souless, because The Harkonnens were the previous tennents and pilfered everything of value as a trap.
>House Atreides and their lavish interiors and comfy rooms
Did you watch the same DUNC as everybody else, anon?
Please, someone who has the film ready (and not on an external drive not plugged in right now, like me) do that anon a favour and post a screencap.
Exactly. Thank you, anon.
I think the point was to show that an epic palace had everything stripped away and was only decorated with whatever they had on hand.
Sure it looks bleak but I like it. I like both Lynch and Denis'.
A fricking royal house living in a cement bunker? Give me a break homosexual.
Are you moronic. It was a fricking mining colony owned by a slave empire. No shit it's a bare ass cement bunker. And they explained how traveling through space is tit twisting expensive, so All they had were a few rugs and a bed for the Duke's son. Did you actually pay attention or are you just stirring shit
>Did you actually pay attention or are you just stirring shit
Doyouknowhereyouare.gif
Why the frick does the CG background look so fricking fake and what is Villeneuve's excuse for the greenscreened foreground characters standing out like a sore thumb?
because they hired pajeet studios to do that work
Because i took a screenshot of a russian stream of a scene that only shows up for 3 seconds.
And you're defending fricking Lynch's dune you contrarian Black person, why are you talking shit about "bad cgi" while defending Lynch's vomit
I dont have to defend it, the set design is self evidently superior.
>of a russian stream
Since when does poor compression quality make edges around greenscreen shit sharper? If anything, shouldn't poor quality of the source blur things out and make such stuff appear less eggregious?
Could it be that you're just fishing for excuses for it looking like shit? You know, like back when the first camrips came out and you Villeneuvebabies all claimed that "you cannot judge it by camrips", and then, when people saw it on stream and posted screencaps and webms from that source, apparently "it looks much better on the big screen". And when people who actually saw it in cinemas and confirmed it looked just as bad, you said that "it was made for IMAX though, so you have to spend 50 dollars to be able to criticize it".
>Caladan: Sterile, vaguely ethnic dark grey
>Arakis: Sterile, vaguely ethnic sand colored
Dennis blows dude, the Artredis palace shots on Dune 1984 are so objectively better both cinematography and set design wise.
Fun fact: frank visited the set when they were making the palace in Arrakeen and said it was exactly how he imagined it when he wrote it
>said it was exactly how he imagined it when he wrote it
Didn't he say that it was different, but that he thorougly enjoyed seeing Lynch's interpretation and was impressed with how authentic it felt?
I believe that was his attitude towards the film overall
Can you not have nuance? I like both, but Lynch is more of a comedy that I laugh at, it's camp and very goofy.
DUNC is very sleek and stylish like a Balenciaga Fashion runway.
>it's camp and very goofy.
Feels like you missed the whole point of Lynch's Dune.
>DUNC is very sleek and stylish like a Balenciaga Fashion runway.
Sleek and stylish? Come on now.
Cannot comment on the Cinemaphile comparison.
You suck at this go back to your discord and attempt something there gay.
You should be punched in the face. Its the palace of the second most important function in the empire, behind only to the Emperor of the Known Universe. Its supposed to be a bustling capital, rich from the spice and shielded from the harsher climate of Arakis due to the natural shield wall rock formation.
You are a pajeet Black person shill.
> Its the palace of the second most important function in the empire,
no, it was a shipping outpost of a brutal slave empire and it was stripped down and sabotaged to be a trap set for their rival. no shit it looks bare bones
Maybe he shouldn’t have striped the plot and dialog into barebones at the same time.
Dunc simply isn’t enjoyable, it feels like a chore to watch.
It is also extremely disjointed feeling.
ok zoom zoom
If I was a zoomer wouldn’t I prefer dunc to lynch 80s cheese?
Your insults don’t even make sense, you are just parroting buzz words.
The guy you're arguing with is most probably gen alpha. So when he calls you a "zoomer" he's implying that you're way older than he can even imagine.
The other maid was better than the bluehaired one.
>but the aesthetic itself is going for a dull minimalistic type of thing
you could say it's an anaesthetic
Correct.
Considering the fraught production and not final cut from Lynch, endearingly decent.
It would be fanservicy, but pugs are freaks and belong in space. Just one scene in the new one would suffice.
It's the interiors that were deflating. Futurist Art Deco the fricking drab interiors for the love of frick. The lack of the vivarium on Arrakis was conspicuous as Kynes' early death/sex swap.
>pugs are freaks and belong in space. Just one scene in the new one would suffice.
Good news for you then: They did cast a Pugh in DUNC, and she really is a freak.
Wonderfully Lynchean/spiritual interpretation of the Frank Herbert myth, visually impressive, well directed, and with both utmost respect for the source material and a great understanding for the medium it was adapting it to. But got out of the editing room in a butchered state that almost destroyed all of the aforementioned achievement. Almost.
Still, I do wonder what could have been.
>Still, I do wonder what could have been.
Hot take: minus the unnecessary ship traveling sequences and rewrite of the intro that Herbert himself narrated, the Smithee edit is a solid film and helped give us the spicediver edit
Both official cuts really lack the necessary focus in the second half of the story. There needed to be more of a thematic red thread guiding the hand of the editor, which is why it was such a massive mistake to not let the writer and director do it himself.
As for the fanedit: That just makes everything worse. Becuase it, like so many fanedits, thinks that including more stuff makes the whole better, when that's the very opposite of what editing is for. The fanedit has even less focus than either official cut, and doesn't even try to understand Lynch's approach, instead opting for "how it is in the book".
The casting and art direction (costumes, sets) are fantastic. Almost every change Lynch made was a clear improvement. These aspects are so good that they, for some audiencemembers, carry the weak parts like the uneven storytelling. I am not interested in the complaints about having to learn words, etc, because a human can encompass any vocabulary.
>yooo lynch's casting is fire!!!
>casts fricking Sir Patrick Stewert to play a grizzled soldier
>tries to make a point why lynch is inferior
>instead proves why lynch is superior
It's still patrician
>patrician
Just looked at the 12 top-left picks, and they literally include
>3x edgy Tarrantino shit
>3x Adam Sandler "comdies"
>2x capeshit
>1x muh Star Wars
>1x fricking Transformers
I guess Full Metal Jacket is alright.
Abysmal list though, not worth looking at the rest.
>choosing Jobs (Kutcher) instead of Steve Jobs (Fassbender)
deeply embarrassing
i love this movie even with its obvious flaws. casting, costumes, and set design are all god-tier.
the new version is fricking garbage all around.
dont forget the soundtack.
10/10 again for that
and the girls
Amen!
you have to be legitimately moronic to think this is even a good movie, let alone better than dunc.
?si=hrzSDaV-cjYhMllu
>tfw you will never charge into combat with patrick stewart and an Atreides battle pug
why even live bros
its great until they get into the desert, then they just skip or cut everything that made the second half of the book interesting
The one guy half-assedly cleaning up the navigator's piss trail with a shop vac always cracks me up
And yet it's actually perfect and logical -- that stuff is like pure coke, you would vaccuum every spilled drop.
Lynch's Navigator was straight up kino design, it moggs all versions including the book and pre-moggs the incoming DUNC version. I am sure Dennis is not showing his take because he knows it can't compare despite Navigators being the most iconic Dune element after worms.
>I am sure Dennis is not showing his take because he knows it can't compare
My suspicion is that he doesn't show his navigators because there won't be any navigators in DUNC.
I said the same about Alia, and apparently it's now all but confirmed that she indeed won't be in DUNC2.
Vileneuf is a hack.
He is running out of stuff to not show.
can someone post the navigator pepe
I love that smug son of a b***h
This one?
lmao yes i love it
this ones is pure kino
>GET RID OF THE BENE GESSERIT WITCH
For me it's the Lego version
it's a fricking cow fetus again, isn't it?
lynch spent his childhood in montana poking things with a stick
This one set design mogs the entire Dunc film without breaking a sweat.
The two things that really work for the film are its music score and its art direction & costuming. Both give the film a distinct and rememberable vibe. The aesthetic of the film should especially be praised: it avoids both copying (as many did) the look that Star Wars brought about nor does it revert to continuing that common 1970s pre Star Wars aesthetic, instead it seeks something unique that successfully creates the sense you are watching some culture that is both familiar and yet also alien.
Casting is the worse part of lynch dune. Hate chalamet all you want he's what I pictured when I thought of young paul
Paul being Luke Skywalker-lite was stupid but everyone else's casting blows DUNC out of the water
>Paul being Luke Skywalker-lite
What the frick are you even trying to say?
The Lynch version set up Paul as a generic hero's journey young adult guy ala Luke Skywalker. Are you slow?
3/10 bait
>he Lynch version set up Paul as a generic hero's journey young adult guy
Nope. Not even close.
>Patrick Stewart as gurney
>Literally who as Duncan idaho
To be fair it might be better than mamoa but
Josh Brolin isn't some literal who but he was definitely poorly directed
>he's what I pictured when I thought of young paul
Good thing you are not in charge of casting any films. Bad thing that Villeneuve is.
Who should've been cast instead in your opinion?
Someone who looks like a young man rather than a prepubescent child. Someone who doesn't look less masculine than his love interest (Zendaya). Someone who isn't a lanklet, or at least willing to gain some muscle mass for the role. Someone who's also a significantly better actor.
Paul is almost a hermaphrodite in the books, plus he's only 15. Do you even know what you're talking about or just want to complain?
>Paul is almost a hermaphrodite in the books
Bullshit.
>he's only 15.
15-year-olds don't look like little boys, anon. Puberty is a thing.
Oh, and before you start spouting shit about Kyle MacLachlan being too old: He was about the same age (+- one year) during shooting as Timochi Chalalalalala was during Part 1. It's just that one of them actually looked like a young man and the other like he took puberty-blockers.
>Bullshit
The Kwisatz Haderach is supposed to be a bridge between male and female. The concept is based on the genderless messiahs in Islamic and other cultures Dune was inspired by. Paul is also described in the books as somewhat androgynous and with a femininity he got from his mother.
It isn't until book five that Jorf Sandeu heals the divide between the genders.
great movie wish lynch wasn't such a baby and would talk about it and even do a director's cut
I like the spicediver edit.
this movie is a treat, a picture of humans a thousand years into the future.
Its strange and interesting, even if it is not a great movie overall.
my favorite special effect is this; the camera and a fleet of model ships are high in the air, with a hole cut out to show the actors on a set way below.
it matches up and looks fricking perfect.
By no means do I think Lynch Dune is a masterpiece however, compared to Villeneuve Dune there is no better example of soul vs soulless.
Gurney felt like he was overacting, theater-style. But the rest of the cast were impeccably cast and their acting was superb. The casting for DUNC is laughably bad in EVERY SINGLE ROLE.
>Gurney felt like he was overacting, theater-style.
You are aware of who played him, yes?
I can't believe people are rewatching Dune part 1 now that it's been re-released in theaters, it was boring as frick the first time.
I'm only going to see it because I didn't see it in theaters the first time around
Lynch actually "got" DUNE despite having zero personal interest in the book or scifi in general. Something like the film's (original, not in the book remember) opening scene is what an actually intelligent director can do with source material. Consider the unfathomable cosmic gap of artistic ability between that and what went into creating DUNC, by people who are supposedly "nerds" who "like nerd culture" and want to "make a movie for nerds" but can't interpet the actual book aesthetically, on even a basic level.
Lynch also had a way with words that allowed him to take what Herbert had written across multiple pages and compact it into very short dialogues.
The famous line "The slow blade penetrates the shield" wasn't in the book, but it succinctly conveys what the book said about melee fights, and nowadays everyone knows and quotes it. Even fricking Villeneuve (who wants to distance himself from Lynch's Dune as much as possible and doesn't seem to respect it) adopted that very line - and went on to have capeshit tier melee fights where quick stabs and slashes completely bypassed the shield and killed.
>Villeneuve (who wants to distance himself from Lynch's Dune as much as possible and doesn't seem to respect it)
That can't be true since DUNC was almost an exact remake. So many scenes from the Lynch movie are remade almost shot for shot.
You can't use exact remake when the casting and the art direction, which are the strongest parts of the Lynch version and which are very strong there indeed, are so different, and it appears that that's exactly what people are complaining about.
The script and direction are certainly similar, it's only differs stylistically. I think specifically of the scene with Paul and the Reverend Mother, both are executed almost the same way.
>both are executed almost the same way.
I mean ... one is executed as a shallow copy of the other, by a moron who quite obviously didn't understand what he was doing, and also thought that he needed to make everything look as dry and sterile as possible because that's "realistic". You could argue that messing up this blatantly does require some sort of "creative input" from a director.
>That can't be true
I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with him where he stated something along the lines that Lynch's Dune wasn't faithful to the book or some shit like that and that he'd rather do his own things.
That he nonetheless took so much from Lynch's version that wasn't in the book is a testament to both Lynch being a great writer and director, and to Villeneuve being a complete hack.
Why people don't talk about how Dennis made shields flash red when they are about to fail? That's a straight up frick you to the audience, an admission he thinks everybody watching are mouth breathers that need videogame logic to understand a concept.
>The famous line "The slow blade penetrates the shield" wasn't in the book, but it succinctly conveys what the book said about melee fights, and nowadays everyone knows and quotes it.
that's not some brilliant masterstroke of writing; anyone told to render what was actually written in the book into short, plain English would have come up with either exactly that or something substantially similar. From the book:
>The shield turns the fast blow, admits the slow kindjal!
>that's not some brilliant masterstroke of writing;
Right. That's why literally everyone quotes it and Villeneuve couldn't come up with his own version of it. Because it's completely trivial and not a great summary at all.
Or maybe you're just a moron.
>didn't address the content of what I said and injects a claim that was not made "not a great summary at all"
dishonest homosexual detected, you lose, good day
timmy chardonnay looks like he came out of the factory where they make all the other twinks they market to white girls nowadays, kyle will always mog him ez
blows dunc so far out the water it's kind of pathetic
Alia is unfilmable
>Alia is unfilmable
How come Lynch managed to do it?
How come Alicia Witt (still a great actress, who also worked with Lynch on Twin Peaks) delivered one of the best child-acting performances ever witnessed on screen?
second half is laughably bad. First half is kino.
They're releasing a restored version for the anniversary so I';m looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.
its a tragedy really. if it wasn't for the producer fricking it up it could have been one of the greatest movies ever made.
This was SOVL and perfection. The new one is an abomination.
Father the sleeper has awakened, with that soundtrack is arguably one of if not the best cinematic scene in all of film. I think only “No, I am your father” in esb can contend.
Agree. And the scene at the end when he breaks Sting in half with his voice.
>and how can this be?
>For he is the Kwisatz Haderach!
My mom was a fan of the book and went to see this movie when it came out, the way she described it to me this meme was basically her reaction. She liked DUNC way more.
>She liked DUNC way more.
Congrats, you're mother is fricking moronic.
That's because your mother is functionally moronic, since toasters are made that way.
Your mom is moronic which explains why the genes passed onto you
Let's not have this thread end on the note of that anon's moronic mother, please. Let's talk about Frank Herbert's moronic son instead!
It's well known that Brian Herbert publicly praised DUNC when it came out. What do you expect him to say about DUNC2? I doubt he'll keep his moth shut.
Who gives a frick about Brian
He can't write for shit and his books soil Frank's legacy
(Sidenote: I enjoyed House Atreides)
>Who gives a frick about Brian
I don't read his bullshit, but I do find his ramblings in interviews entertaining from time to time.
If you asked him to rate Black person dick I'm sure he'd give it a 10/10 too
Don't give him any ideas.
it's moronic they green'd dune at the end but i genuinely enjoy watching Dune the way I enjoy watching Wrath of Kahn. Which means not all the time, but if i saw it on tv, id watch through it. Haven't seen Dunc purely because Timothee doesn't take acting seriously. He has only served to weigh down any film he's involved with no matter how small.
I love it and nobody can stop me from loving it
nipple flaps
Kyle MacLachlan was a primo twink in his youth
The only thing I really liked was the dream sequence in the desert
It's necessary for the plot that Paul be about 15 and Jessica 35.
Chalamet and McLaughlin were about the same age (25) when they played Paul, but Chalamet was much better at playing a 15-year-old than McLaughlin was.
tim plays a street kid whereas paul plays the son of a noble duke
>paul
kyle*
Chalamet's paul was atrocious. Far worse than McLaughlin'a
>Chalamet was much better at playing a 15-year-old than McLaughlin was.
Chachacha played a 12-year-old at most. And autistic one at that.
And the only reason you thought MacLachlan wasn't believable is because you're a zoomer who grew up with tiktok and thinks that teenagers need to behave like complete morons all the time.
He should have just taken George's offer and made RotJ than getting involved in this.
But then we wouldn't have a single decent adaption of Dune. It's the only watchable one ever made
what if lynch's film never got made and the first adaptation was the miniseries?
