It gets worse every time I watch it. I used to think it could have been a good movie if Lynch got final edit but it's painfully obvious that it's fundamentally flawed and had a terrible script.
I'm seeing contrarians praise it now that there's a new adaptation and I want to ask you all to please stop. I really like some aspects of it, I even prefer some of them over the Villeneuve version, but it is still a dogshit movie.

The only praise I see for Dune '84 I typically see is appreciation for the visuals and actors. You talk as though a league of contrarians have been spamming praise beyond that, but you and I both know that's bullshit.
>a league of contrarians
Also known as Cinemaphile
>The only praise I see for Dune '84 I typically see is appreciation for the visuals and actors.
That's the only thing I personally like about it, also I read the book first so I kinda filled in the gaps with the plot automatically so I don't really understand the plot errors
Kind of hard for me to understand the praise for the visuals either. This is supposed to be an ornithopter.
>bu bu but muh spice diver edit
frick off. it's even worse than the theatrical cut.
Wrong
Wronger
I was watching this today. I have no idea in what way it's supposed to be better. It is just longer, but it feels like it adds nothing.
>It is just longer
exactly.
Also many of the extended scenes are just fricked. the conversation between the Emperor and Navigator has extra expository dialogue added in for no reason. the theatrical cut has a nice flow to it.
>but it feels like it adds nothing
Absolute tard
What does it add then? Of value, I mean.
>token of respect scene
>Shadout Mapes' test
>Paul crying after killing Jamis
>creation of the water of life
>Chani's grief after Kynes' death
>Thuffir's death
>Paul taking Irulan as wife
>etc.
Nearly all of the deleted scenes contain important plot points from the book
>book book le book
What do they add to the movie?
>plot points
That's nice and all, anon, but there is one thing you're overlooking: Films get cut for a reason, and, no, it's not simply to avoid having their overlength scare audieences away. It's because cutting scenes out, or changing their order, or sometimes just shortening them, can change the flow and tension of the story, and sometimes direct focus onto or away from certain aspects.
When you just include all scenes you've filmed indiscriminantly, you'll most likely end up with something that does not flow well, does not manage tension, does not have a directed focus. The phrase "kill your darlings" exists for a reason: Sometimes you have to cut a great scene out for the good of the film as a whole. You have to make choices, because if you refuse to make choices, you hurt the project as a whole.
That's what people call the "Spicediver Edit" out for. It didn't make any choices. Like so many other fan edits, it just included everything, and ends up with the same narrative impact as a cut-scene-compilation in your DVD extras: Nice to have for curiosity's sake, but not particularly exciting as a filmwatching experience.
Granted, that neither of the official cuts is particularly great (espeically in the second half where most stuff was cut) does soften the blow. But a fan edit that actually put in the effort to establish some narrative flow, like those official cuts at least tried, would be preferable to the "just everything" approach from a film fan perspective.
>it just included everything
This is categorically false.
Oh, is it? What did it not include?
I sure hope you don't mean the ending, because the only reason it cut that out is because "muh book", not to improve the film.
A guy rises from the desert setting as messiah = Lawrence of Arabia.
Thurfir as political footbal = NOT in the David Lean movie
it's in the tv edit and spicediver too.
Do they have Thufir' arc?
thufir gets captured by the harkonnens and then they try to get him to kill paul at the end but instead he kills himself, yeah that's in the extended cuts.
patrick stewart is far closer to gurney than josh brolin. 84 baron is definitely the best representation, though 00 baron has the gay part nailed. stellan is a great actor and i think he played the baron fine, but being milk white and hairless just honestly ruins it for me.
I felt even josh was too clean and handsome for the part but he's definitely closer to what I imagined.
I also always imagined the baron as bald for some reason, but acting louder and more bombastic than the guy in the new movies. And even fatter, but that might have been too cartoonish for a movie I guess.
you should reread the book then since your imagination is so far off.
I'm in the middle of it
well then start over because you clearly missed something. i find it best to pair the 84 film with the book in terms of colors and details because they nailed it pretty damn well. frank herbert even visited the set and gave it his approval.
Barely anything is described visually in this book besides a few words. Like the only things mentioned about the baron is that he's morbidly obese, wears a dark robe and has those floating devices. That's it.
Ornithopters are something insect-like with wings.
etc.
You can interpret these in a lot of different ways it seems.
it's mentioned that the harkonnens are redheads so like i said, you missed something. there's a reason 2/3 adaptations have it that way.
>A guy rises from the desert setting as messiah = Lawrence of Arabia.
Also the bible. Old testament with Moses (and a few others later on), new testament with Jesus. And Muslims have yet another version of that tale.
You'd think they'd grow tired of retelling the same thing over and over with a different cast of characters and slight alterations. But I guess remakes always were a thing with the simple-minded sheep.
t. didn't read the book therefore is unable to properly enjoy it
>now that there's a new adaptation
i've always enjoyed it you gaslighting Blackdamus
reminder syfy did it in 4 hours
dunc 2 does paul's visions pretty well imo but then denis ignores the rest of the book and does his own moronic shit that's being saved for resolution in dunc 3
>his own moronic shit
Not even certain how much of it is "his own" and how much of it was Brian Herbert's ideas. Because Brian Herbert was involved in the DUNC scripts and production.
So if you thought you wouldn't see the day where self-proclaimed bookgays applaud and praise Brian Herbert for raping his father's legacy ... you're now living in that reality.
It's been so long since I read the book/have only watched the theatrical cut once, what scenes did Spicediver add? The only ones I recognized as being added were
>Fremen funeral water extraction
>Paul forgives Thufir
spicediver edit ends the film the way the book does, where jessica tells chani that history will remember them as wives despite only being mistresses
spicediver took the smithee edit and removed the unnecessary extra transition scenes, added in the book chapters and quotes approximate to their places
Dune should be adapted as a series tbh, it's hard to adapt in a movie format because there's too much shit to cover in two hours so the movie either has to be 5 hours long or you need to cut it in half, both options having their own problems. Lynch was given an impossible task trying to cram everything in two hours, everything besides the pacing is kino.
tons of miscast actors, weirding way being guns, bene gesserit look like shit even compared to the new ones, Baron is completely garbage and ill take the new feyd any day
It was already done in the 2000s as a miniseries, James McAvoy is Leto II in Children of Dune
Am I insane for thinking she was kinda cute
Handsome woman
Its a great movie, I read the books before watching it. It leaves out a lot of major scenes and rewrites some shit but as a movie experience it was kino.
Hey look colour!
When will Villeneuve start using colour? c**t is allergic to it.
>Doesnt say how it’s flawed
>Doesnt say why it’s a terrible script
Your post is shit OP, because you lack specificity.
Princess irulan staring at you and doing exposition for ten minutes is excellent screenwriting
t. Cinemaphile morons
>ten minutes
it's not even 2 minutes you fat moron
>Oh, yes, I forgot to tell you...
Sting was so cool in this
Omg Sting was in peak physical form
Is that natty 0% body fat. Im a big boned Scottish laddie, i could never look that good.
I now get the venture bros reference
The lynch version is flawed but interesting. It has some really fricking insane visuals + sets and scenes that really build atmosphere. The music is also top notch and helps build that eeire atmosphere. The music in the opening with princess irulan is amazing. Some individual scenes are amazing, but It also has some of the most moronic scenes put on to screen and too much lynch weirdness in there that ruins the film.
DUNC is the complete opposite. It is sterile and bland. Its like Villeneuve watched the lynch version and made the film over-restrained to compensate. There is barely ANY dune weirdness in there. I havent seen the 2nd film so i cant comment on that but the two best scenes in DUNC are the Sardaukar home planet scene and the baron's pet scene because of that otherworldly weirdness. They take up maybe 2 minutes of screen time total. The whole film should have been like that. The rest is bland exposition from mumbling characters on bland brutalist sets.
The navigator/emperor scene in the lynch version (which was a lynch creation not in the book) is better than anything in DUNC by a country mile and alone makes it a more worthwhile piece of art than DUNC, even with it's flaws. The lynch version is flawed but at least it isnt boring, which cant be said about DUNC.
you will like Dunc 2 a lot more than
>contrarians
Reddit buzzword thread.
Dunc 1 is barely better but Dunc 2 is a lot better than Lynch's. I say this as a Lynch fan and a reader of the book series up to god emperor
the first half is utter kino. the second half is rushed and poorly edited
Dune was always shit. The books too
This. First book was slow as frick and the 84 movie was just awful.
Will Lynch be the next one to bow before Villenueve and kiss his mother fricking ring? Only a matter of time. Lynchcels I dont feel so good...
>muh Spielberg
Kek. Imagine thinking Hollywood elites paising their own means anything.
lynch hasn't even watched dunc and doesn't intend to. conversely he's actually now considering giving us the lynch cut of dune since it's gotten better reception lately
nah brian didn't do any script changes like that, every book with his name on it was mostly written by kevin j anderson and brian just took credit for the paycheck. that's why some of the prequel novels are actually enjoyable. all totally useless but not the worst way to spend time. the new art style that's been used in the comics and partially in dunc was under brian's direction though, so that all had to meet his approval since he was a producer
>brian didn't do any script changes like that
https://www.wired.com/story/dune-brian-herbert-q-and-a/
>Brian Herbert is also, yes, involved with the upcoming Dune film from director Denis Villeneuve. He’s been advising on the script and believes it will be the definitive adaptation of his father’s book.
advising =/= writing. brian did not take on a writing role for the movie, he's an advisor and producer but beyond that cannot just take over writing duties as he pleases. i'm sure when denis came up with the idea to make chani a rebel he reassured brian that she would revert to her housewife status in dunc 3.
>advising =/= writing
We both know what it means in practice if you have the rights holder "advise" you on the script.
Not saying that Villanova is blameless. But two hacks can ruin more than one.
i'm aware that producers often love to depart their "influence" on the films they produce. however since brian is not an executive producer he can be vetoed, not sure by who other than the EP.
>since brian is not an executive producer
He's gotten WB to film one of his bullshit fanfiction thingies as a streaming series, anon. I don't know why, but they're eating right out of his palm.
>I don't know why, but they're eating right out of his palm.
i mean he's shat out like damn near 40 prequel books, it's a treasure trove for wb to milk in adapting
>it's a treasure trove for wb to milk in adapting
Treasure. Well, I guess they do say that one man's treasure is another man's fecal matter. Or soemthing along those lines, was it?
>however since brian is not an executive producer
He was, literally, an executive producer
https:/imdb.com/title/tt15239678/fullcredits/producer?ref_=m_ttfc_4
His name was in the credits in the theater, I remember because I immediately pointed straight at his name and said "A million deaths are not enough for Brian" to my friend who I watched the movie with
>kevin j anderson
Just about the last guy I'd give free reign over my father's legacy. Was Brian insane? Did he read anything from this guy? Probably would have done better job writing that shit himself even if he's not a real author. Since Anderson is actually an anti-author.
>Was Brian insane?
Have you ever listened to him talk, anon?
>It gets worse every time I watch it
Confirmed zoomer homosexual. I own the blu ray and have seen Dune 84' dozens of times. But I have not been able to completely finish a full second watch of DUNC after seeing it once in the theater. I just don't have the strength to make it through that boring ass third act.
The first half is good but holy shit the second is a complete mess and the ending made me laugh
>1984
>Rapist Paedophile is shown as a degenerate by being naked and saying he will frick Pauls kid sister
>DUNC version he's shown as a bald Albino but fully clothed and doesn't say anything sexual
DUNC IS SHIT!
don't forget they wouldn't even say jihad in dunc yet made sure that all the fremen and arrakis civilians were sandBlack folk and spoke in sandBlack person like dialect
This is why DUNC is so shit, visually stunning, yet so sterile and lacking any flavour. It's like an airport, impressive structures, clean, built for efficiency, but cultureless and completely devoid of SOVL. That's why people don't live in airports they leave to live in the real world and much like DUNC it's completely devoid of what makes a film, art and that is SOVL.
>visually stunning
Stunningly bland and uncreative, you mean?
sting was too old so was kyle
Just because there's no Zendaya for you to jerk your little zoomie wiener to doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
The first half was honestly pretty much 1:1 with the first movie. Nothing felt disgustingly bad besides some of the camera shots looked like a made for tv movie. The 2nd half is pretty shit though
To be quite honest Lynch's version is quite shit, esp how they handled the weirding way and ofc the cgi is dated. That being said it actually manages to stand as a standalone work and kinda explains most of the plot, which is utterly missing in DUNC.
Still it must be stated that ths objectively best version is the miniseries, from being true to the source materiel, not having a trash visual direction and down to the casting which is in all points superior to both Lynch's version and the new one.
Literally every single 1984 casting is better than every single 2000 casting
The best credit towards the SciFi series is that they did actually adapt Messiah and Children which is something nobody else has been able to pull off.
1984s casting is atrocious to anyone who read the books
>1984s casting is atrocious to anyone who read the books
Oh, well, if you say so. But apparently not to the guy who wrote them.
But what does Frank Herbert know about Dune, right?
ironic since everyone in 84 is the spitting image of their book counterpart (minus the emperor), especially picrel
Picard as Gurney was weird. Book described him as an ugly lump of a man.
Chani I imagined as something between Sean Young and Zenyatta.
Baron was lame. Sting as Feyd was a joke.
>ofc the cgi is dated
This is your brain on capeshit.
Care to point me to any "CGI" in Lynch's Dune, child?
Not him but the Holtzman shields are clearly CGI. Minecraft/Roblox personal shields, I forgot if they portrayed ship shields
>the Holtzman shields are clearly CGI
Nope. Rotoscoping.
You zoomers are all completely fricked by your tikitok and instagram filters. Technologically illiterate by choice.
you found out 40 years after, you fricking zoomer, get the frick outta here, you fricking homosexual.
Imagine pretending that Lynch wasn't the perfect match.
>I'm seeing contrarians praise it
it's just the usual lynch pseud trolls and u fell for it m80
