Jesus christ. I haven't seen the film in person, but every clip looks like when your embarrassing younger cousin wants to show off his karate moves at thanksgiving and demands everyone look at him.

M Night still makes the same errors he did 20 years ago, he's never grown. If anything he's regressed.

Shyamalan has NEVER done an action scene in his life.
This is what it looks like when he tries to do one.
Of course, as a famous movie director, he tried to come up with his own "style", instead of watching 30 of the best action movie of all times and seeing why it works.
It's the exact same thing with Scorsese and The Irishman. It's a director's first try on mocap and technology.
I just noticed something about this scene. I've watched it a few times over the years trying to analyze how something from a big budget film could come out looking this bad and I think I figured it out. M Night wanted a "oner" with no cuts for this scene as it was supposed to be a big call to action but was too incompetent to pull it off. The camera barley moves making it look static and slow. Everyone is waiting for their turn to do their moron overly long dance number making it even slower.
By the time this got to the editing bay there was no saving it as there was likely no coverage they could cut to so the pacing was fricked. Had he shot this normally with proper coverage, close ups, and moved the camera during the action more it would have came out way better. It's easy the pick on the poor acting from the kids or the bad effects but this is primary on the directors shoulders. He made terrible decisions and let his whole cast and crew down. I'm shocked he got to film another movie after this. Should have been a career killer.

Michael Bay would have done a better job. At least he knows how to film an action scene.
>does all that twirling >stops and just does a simple move >all that happens is a little gust of wind that barely knocks him back >he stands there waving a sword at nothing the whole time
That's some all time bad action there

Don't make fun of his idle animation.
Not his fault the player character gets so many frames for his attack.
>M Night's directing is regularly this bad
his directing is good, pacing and cinematography always on point
its his scriptwriting that always sucks ass
I know this has been said to death but M Night is so mysterious. I know Sense, Unbreakable and Signs aren't perfect, but they are at least very competent. He was never a great writer, you get a bit of shoddy and stilted writing at times in his first few movies, but he was able to make it work. Signs in particular iirc has some really suspenseful and well directed moments.
So how did he drop off SO hard?
He definetely became more self-indulgent. But, he started out really good. So it wasn't simply that he didn't grow - he got worse. It's like he had a stroke
I mean, come on, while Glass is horrible, Split is wonderful and a very good/funny movie.
I haven't seen his newer movies. I take people's word that Split is good. I'm more talking about the decade long slump that began with Village.
And predictably he shat the bed on the landing with Glass. He can't help himself. And now that he's funding his own films and being rewarded for it, it's just indulging his worst habits (repetitive camerawork, overuse of exposition, robotic dialogue and wooden acting).
>So how did he drop off SO hard?
have you seen old?
its complete dogshit but at the same time its one of the most entertaining and engaging movies made in a decade
he's the chosen one

The plot sadly is NOT engaging, Shyamalan strips all the potential mystery out of the premise by loading scenes with stiff exposition, and then of course completely overexplaining it at the end.

reminded me of Us in it presenting a legitimately engaging premise right at the start, but by the end of the film just explaining every little minutiae of the plot til there's zero intrigue left. Except with much worse acting than Us, naturally.
cringe kino is only kino because of how easy it is to mock it over multiple silly mistakes which never deserves respect, its like saying the local lowcow deserves respect
>Bloodbending would be useless at range he's not like his crazy dad
He's stronger than his dad you moron, literally a prodigy trained in bloodbending as soon as he was shown to be a waterbender. We see bloondbending pick up entire rooms. The frick is Zaheer going to do? Fly around and blow some fricking wind on him from far away?
a lot of people talk about how awful this film is but very few people point out how many awful "long takes" there are. Some scenes would be drastically improved if they just did some editing, but because Shamalayan decided to do so many scenes in "one take" there are a lot of awkward bits that don't work. Like Sokka reaching for his boomerang and realizing it isn't there. That would work if you cut to a shot of him reaching for his back but the way it's shot he looks like a dumbass.
This movie is proof Shamwow does not know how cameras work and cannot film action sequences. Every single "action" scene has the look of "Oh we'll make this look very CG and cool in post", and then they never did. So you just have wide flat shots of nothing.
>wtf is he talking about, why did he just quote a dickhead? >oh it's from avatar what does ang have a line on his forehead that makes it look like a d-

Has there ever been a more embarrassing movie made?

M Night's directing is regularly this bad, couple it with a big budget scale and you get this 150 million dollar student film level
Jesus christ. I haven't seen the film in person, but every clip looks like when your embarrassing younger cousin wants to show off his karate moves at thanksgiving and demands everyone look at him.
it's one of the funniest movies i've ever scene. strongly recommend it
Was he supposed to be moving fast here? Why did they stand and watch him not move for a good 4 seconds?
The entire movie is like that, just turgid. See how many people just stand around waiting for a cue
James Newton Howard trying valiantly yet vainly to prop up this terrible film with his score is a highlight
