Echo MCU Miniseries Discussion

Now that the dust has settled, what did Cinemaphile think of this show?

Imho it wast that bad especially compared to other Disney+ MCU shows. Weird that Disney did not market it better to help it succeed more. I mean its not perfect especially at the end when it shit the bed with the deus ex machina magic mental fight at the end. However it wasnt as bad as I expected it to be, like Hawkeye was worse than this.

Hey, you dropped your mystic bullshit in my grounded crime show.
It's all the more inexcusable when it's all completely made up, none of it derived from the original character at all.
I don't regret watching it for more Kingpin, at least. If they hadn't chopped down the runtime the way they did, I probably would've just skimmed to his scenes plus the Daredevil fight.

By market it better I meant not turn it into a spotlight feature and try to get over with it as soon as possible so that they dont have to deal with it later. They didnt promote it much before its release to garner interest and hype. They did bare minimum marketring before its release and just spent the budget all at once around the release.

It showed lack of confidence in the product and it wasnt even as bad as their other shows that they did bette job marketing and packaging it on their platform

My main issue is that the tone is all over the place.
One moment and it's dark and grounded Daredevil-esque crime show, the other it's typical goofy MCU shit with the generic quirky loser cousin or the marginally less goofy (but still very goofy) Welsh gangster, then it's full on MCU Moon Knight with lame magic shit.

Eh, even the cousin sidekick was relatively grounded for a MCU. It wasn't like he was constantly making wisecracking jokes or lampshading Daredevil was similar, it was serious overall but it did have levity and jokes (one of which happens when Matt and Foggy first met a traumatized Karen who had just been assaulted).

Or having villains who are an actual threat and not a group of woman-hating redditors. (aka terminally online writers who don't care about comics ruining Intelligencia with their seething at people criticizing them)
Or, as bad as they may be, having actual fight scenes.
Or having a semblance of an arc for the main character, going from a ruthless criminal to a more empathetic person (how it's done is another story)
Or when they brought a cool villain from an old MCU property he wasn't used as a hippie joke Yes, I'm asspained about Blonsky. Yes I'm one of the ten and a half people who liked The Incredible Hulk. Bite me.

That story beat was so awful it managed to piss off both sides.

          >MoM finale fans who wanted to see Wanda be a hero again after healing
          >Mom Finale haters who had to watch Strange brush off the actual kidnapping/mindrape and instead have the story blame everything on a book she just picked up instead of any character development

*Rumor* has it Disney itself tried in vain to cancel the show and write it off (like Batgirl) but couldn't for one reason or another. So it was unceremoniously dumped on Disney+ and pretty much only the diehards and the (is there a difference?) youtube critics gang cared.

Loki was great, WandaVision and Moon Knight were decent. The special presentations were solid too and it's a shame they're discontinuing them because they apparently didn't do too well on Disney+.

        Anonymous

        >Loki was great
I disagree mainly on the grounds that it overwanked Sylvie by a metric frickton, and the TVA made no fricking sense for being simultaneously these reality warpers that can nuke timelines and disarm infinity gauntlets but also get beaten up by a girl

It ended really well, though. And I'm saying that even overlooking my distaste at the fact that Sylvie was allowed to remain on her moral highground to the very end

        >WandaVision
I had the exact opposite experience with it. It started really, really well. And then it completely fricked up on multiple levels between IT WAS AGATHA, Wanda being given a pass for everything she did, and NuVision just kind of flying away with no resolution

        >Moon Knight
Nah, didn't really get into it.

Agree with all of this, though I've not watched Season 2 of Loki (people say it's good, somehow)
It's kind of crazy that there are currently 10 separate MCU shows and counting on disney+, and not a single one has been fully, undeniably good.

            Anonymous

            >(people say it's good, somehow)
Bombastic self-sacrifice and taking a third option in a nutshell. And yeah, when people say Loki is good what they are really doing is begging you to stop thinking about why Sylvie is better at literally everything than the Loki who was actually trained at the Asgardian court and was established in the first movie to be as much of a fighter as the Warriors 3 (and Lady Sif) since him going on their adventures is apparently a common thing.

But no, fricking Sylvie the cosmic bum is somehow way better at everything for no good reason, other than the one that exists out of universe in the writers' heads.

            >better at literally everything
            And
            AND, this is important
Is never assigned any personal responsibility by the events of the show for screwing up literally everything for everyone, and somehow remains presented as a moral authority to the end simply because the regular Loki is pathetically in love with her.

Up until very recently, Marvel Studios was operating under the assumption that everything they did was basically good and that the general audience would always watch it and the fans would always love it.

            >These are the people who thought Quantumania would be a surefire hit.
I, with shame, have to admit I don't think Quantumania is as bad as people say. I think it's not great, and it's completely reasonable that people didn't like it, but I feel it got a lot of residual flak from the disaster that was Love and Thunder.
Which, in turn, got a lot of shit but in my opinion NOT ENOUGH, because people still had some good will towards Marvel. But L&T depleted that good will, broke that seal, and Quantumania got caught in the whiplash.

Again, not saying it was good, just that it's considered worse than it is because it came out when people were fully fed up with Marvel.

The thing is Marvel had been mediocre at best since Avengers 1. But a comic book live action universe in theatres was a novelty and people ate up whatever shot that was thrown at them. Hype carried them till Endgame after which the hype started to die drastically. As MCU became mainstream the novelty died off and mediocrity no longer became acceptable. So even though the quality did not dip much in comparison to before the tolerance for lower quality was lost by the audience

Kingpin was the highlight of the show, was faithful to how he was portrayed in Netflix Daredevil. He actually brutally killed people in this show, had double agents in other rival criminal groups, got to see him flying into autistic rage, and tied his origin from Daredevil into the main story of the Echo.

But it does kind of make his depiction in Hawkeye incongrous with the rest of the MCU now, in that show he was hiding out in warehouses, could withstand explosions, rip off car doors with his bare hands, and had to run away from the cops.

I really couldn't get behind him being so hung up on a woman not named Vanessa is the main problem.

      >Wanda being given a pass for everything she did
Yet people still complain when she returned in MoM as a villain

To be fair, HOW she returned in MoM as a villain is part of the problem. They really dance around her being corrupted by the book by having the focus be on two random boys she saw in a dream rather than, you know, fricking Vision being dead. Just ignore Vision for the sake of these random children.

        >I really couldn't get behind him being so hung up on a woman not named Vanessa is the main problem.
In DD, the guy was a recluse whose only personal connections were his assistant, his mom, and then Vanessa. He went to great lengths not to be seen and to not be associated with the criminals under him. He put in the effort to learn Chinese to deal with Gao.

The MCU will tell you that the same guy, at the around same time, had friends, ran a goofy gang of mobsters, hung out in public with the friend's daughter, was a loan shark who met with people in person, beat people up in the street, adopted the friend's daughter as a protégé, "could not remember a time when he did not loved her like a daughter", but also couldn't be bothered to learn ASL.

It's not the same character. Played by the same actor with the same mannerisms and the same gravitas, but any way you slice it, it's just not the same character. He's incompatible with his old characterization and history, whatever bullshit they may pull out to justify it.

Just out of curiosity I decided to check the full context of the Daredevil fight to see if I missed anything or they touched it up or something, or it ended on a better note.

I expected it to be stupid but even in my expectations I didn't account for "He just up an fricking leaves after he knocks her down for no raisen". He just leaves! They literally just had him there to look awful trying to slow down his fighting just so they could come in and say "Wow, special lady, none of my MEN have ever been able to keep up with him like that!" and then he just leaves her behind, despite what he just watched her do because he'd been "Staking them out".

I gave it a chance and somehow it went dumber than imagined.
