And to think people wrote this film off as a failure simply because of its poor opening

We just can't stop winning Wade chads

It still is a flop, but I guess compared to every other Disney animation recently almost breaking even instead of losing hundreds of millions of dollars is a win.

it made more internationally (AKA total minus US) than spiderverse
but spiderverse made significantly more in the US, where it actually matters
there was some shitty clickbait article that gave people the wrong impression

homie, this broke even, but Milesverse is still more profitable. The shilll articles saying that Elemental surpassed Milesverse hid the fact that it only outgrossed it slightly in the international box office. Even without disregarding Elemental's production budget, Milesverse still grossed more box office than Elemental when domestic and international are combined.

    Bullshit.
Its box office right now is $470M.
The theaters keep around half of that so the studio gets back $235M.
The movie's budget was $200M before marketing costs.
It may squeeze a tiny profit but not one Disney would get excited for.

Disney is a little desperate right now in lieu of financial struggles, so they might be willing to squeeze any fruit that will give them juice.

Disney not losing money is enough for them to get excited at this point

      >The theaters keep around half of that
      lol, not even fricking close

Standard distribution contracts work on a sliding scale, the theater keeps very little of the opening weekend or first few weeks and only really starts to keep a moderate amount of the box office for films that stay in the theaters for a few months. standard contract for *most* distributors are the theater keeps 10% of the opening week, 20% of the second, and so on, which means a movie needs to run for five weeks before the theater is keeping half the box office profits, and most theatrical runs are only about 4-6 weeks tops these days and the box drops exponentially after release so the theaters keep very very little of the ticket sales.

I said the contract for *most* distributors because Disney does its own distribution and is notoriously stricter on its contracts. Opening weekend is usually a hard 0, first week 5%, second 10%, third 15% and so on. Disney films are usually fairly profitable and if they’re very successful the theatrical runs can go a few months and eventually the theater can turn a profit on the ticket sales, but if it flops and/or has a short theatrical run Disney is the only one seeing any box office profits.

Theaters rely almost entirely on concession and subscription sales to stay in business.

Elemental was a flop, it barely cleared $150M domestic and it’s only broken even from the international box office.

Frick you, call me when there’s real news. Also, Pixar sequels rarely happen and ever rarer for them to be good. I can’t say I’m hopeful that they’d male one for this one instead of a more successful one.

You can change your IP, OP, but you can't generate any genuine hype.

In terms of structure and overarching storytelling this movie was clunky as frick but on a character level it worked well enough, and since by this point there's zero expectations attached to Pixar films there's no real framework to really call it a bad movie. Idk if thematically there's a point in a sequel, but I guess they'll want to explore the Steam Baby thing that they originally intended to put in the movie.

That's why you can't blame marketing for its initial failure. The movie is fine with three mediocre but highly intertwined subplots, and none of them are interesting on their own that a trailer can be cut from them.

So what does marketing have to work with? The Clod scene which is like the only interesting dialogue in the movie, and the romcom scenes where they dick about. The scene with Ember changing colors as she touches the minerals is not brought up again, so it's literally a waste of time, but it's also one of the "interesting" scene that marketing has.

Lol so where are those anons who come here to say Pixar are masters and don't just end up making sequels out of their IPs again?
No more creativity. Just rehash and add on.

      I want to know too ;_;

On paper, it's "doing something out of the ordinary with someone you're interested in, to get a feeling of how much chemistry and compatibility you have with the other person".
In reality, if you're insecure, it's going to feel like a theatrical performance where you're constantly gauging the other person's reactions to what you're saying and doing, hoping that you can come off as a catch. Don't be like that. It's supposed to be fun and easy (and if it's not, that's evidence that (s)he's not the best match for you).

That's why you can't blame marketing for its initial failure. The movie is fine with three mediocre but highly intertwined subplots, and none of them are interesting on their own that a trailer can be cut from them.
