I can see Darcy having tried to run away from the halfway house in the past, only to grudgingly return when her belly was empty and the nights grew cold.

This is the first time we see a nandroid run, I'm actually surprised

        >captcha is sta22
        I'm spooked

I have to admit, I'm confused by Emmy's reaction here. If she were human, it would be understandable; she's freaked out by her situation and panicking. Panic, though, is a biological reaction. Your adrenaline starts flowing and your "fight or flight" response kicks in. But robots don't have adrenaline, as far as we know.

You could simulate that behavior, but why would Sterling (or any other robot manufacturer) program robots to do so? Obviously Emmy has self-preservation instincts built in, but panic is not a helpful reaction in this circumstance, so why go that far?

I mean battle droids act the exact same way, she’s probably being overclocked or some shit.

            Anonymous

it may not be panic as we know it, but from what we've seen so far sapient machines in general seems to have human-like minds, to the point they'll react similarly.

But even without "panic", she's in a strange situation, where she is under significant stress (mentally at least), her perception of the world is in shamble and the outmodes (that she was told she was superior to) were mocking her for having hope.
Is it really that weird that she wouldn't know what to do and want to get out?

If Emmy, say, saw Madeline in danger, I could see her going into full-blown emergency damn-your-self-preservation-you-have-a-child-to-save mode. But this is just self-preservation, and Emmy doesn't appear to be in any immediate danger. There should be no reason for a panic response.

              >There should be no reason for a panic response.

She have plenty of reasons to panic, and the outmodes' attitude is exactly the thing that would send someone over the edge.

                >exactly the thing that would send someone over the edge.
Would send a human over the edge.
I'd think a robot would not behave that way.

The robots minds are clearly made similar if not identical to a human mind, even if there's no real physical mechanisms such as hormones.
We've seen them worry, get mad, get jealous, be sad ect ect.
When there's nothing superseeding their function (like needing to worry about Madeline for Emmy), I don't see why they would not panic when they're in a strange and potentially dangerous situation.

Emmy is clearly not thinking straight, either from her malfunction or from a normal discomfort from being basically thrown out and mocked for it

Could be a learned reaction, we know they learn like humans, having some sort of self-programming neural net, if they didn't then there wouldn't be a nandroid school just a quick upload of data.

She's a human-like robot with human-like reactions. I guess her humanoid robot brain decided that she needs to go back to her masters asap and the people who're telling her it's impossible are bad for her, so she ran away from them. To be fair, they've been acting sussy from the very beginning.

Nandroids have repeatedly demonstrated human behavior and emotions, even in situations where it wouldn't make sense to "program" them this way, and you're only now questioning it?

Nandroids are pretty much synthetic humans, at least when it comes to how they think or feel. Clearly something in their digital minds simulates the effects that hormones have on biological minds. Whether it makes sense from a "biological"/technical standpoint is basically irrelevant, the whole universe is not very realistic in the first place.

She knows for a fact that she didn't get tossed aside like the rest of them, she knows her family does love her like one of their own
However this band of outmode misfits and an old woman who started talking to a painting of her dead Dad aren't listening and in fact the outmodes are mocking her with unwanted commentary and snickering

She's very clearly not gonna get the help she needs from these people. The outmodes don't care, the butlerbot sorta loathes her, and their "owner" is senile who lives in a rundown mansion

As what everyone else said, Nandroids operate like people and when you've been put in a situation you never thought you'd be in you're going to act differently

          Anonymous

It does make sense from a human interaction perspective. If you see a panicked nandroid run past you, from their body language and expression you can tell there's a problem without either of you ever speaking because of the obvious sense of urgency she gives off. If she skipped past with a permanent smile on her face because that's all she can do, then anyone who sees her won't realize she's running towards or away from an emergency or danger unless they stop and interact. Robots being able to express the full range of human emotions, in the full range of ways humans express them, improves the abilities of robots and humans to communicate and understand each other.

That's probably the case, but nobody, including Darcy and the other robots, seems to believe into Emmy's freak accident. They all think she's in denial after being abandoned by her owners. They're sort of right, nobody knows what was wrong with her her arm, and then she defied the sterling scientists and went awol, she would probably get dismantled.

I think these are throwaways and we won't get any updates again until the end when Emmy reunites with them and it's just like, 'Emmy, you're home!' THE END

          >Seems like every real sentence out of Dennis' mouth comes with a jab or joke, he can't be taken too seriously.
Maybe it's just because of where these robots are, but it's sad that even after all of Emmy's insistence, neither the robots nor the humans here will even humor her that she was separated from the Delaires by accident. It's telling how poorly robots are treated in Dupont and likely the rest of the country too, if not the world. None of them would even entertain the idea because robots are so disposable to the majority of humans that the chances of it actually being an accident or anyone even caring are nonexistent.

          >I think these are throwaways
If Emmy returns to the house then yeah, but Dennis seems like he might be along for the ride if they do go full Homeward Bound. Garrison seems like a permanent fixture of the house though, I doubt we'll see him go anywhere else.

I guess it's Dom's writing style, but we've never actually seen any outright malicious characters in this comic:
        >Molly wasn't trying to get Emmy outmoded; she was just annoyed at her malfunctioning (possibly out of fear that she could do the same?)
        >Dr. Bennet was not out to hurt Emmy; he genuinely was trying to help her but gave up, thinking she was a lost cause.
        >The Sterling directors were just unfeeling. They're probably the closest to "evil" characters we've seen, but they're just products of the fricked-up world they've created.
        >The Jawa-droids in the dump were just doing their jobs and didn't realize Emmy was still operational.
        >Dennis is a jerk, but he seems to be more bark than bite.

I'm not sure if we're going to see any actually dangerous outmodes or robot-hating humans; it would be a major shift in tone for the story. Not ruling it out, though; this would be an appropriate time for it.

I'd say the Nabs (I think that's the name of the little red fricks) were pretty malicious by themselves, at least because I interpreted their reaction to Emmy being alive as anger before bailing out with what they could.

          >Dr. Bennet was not out to hurt Emmy; he genuinely was trying to help her but gave up, thinking she was a lost cause.
He was hardly "trying", people figured there could be an issue with his update but he shot them down, because he didn't want to admit that he made a mistake and/or didn't want his mistake to come to light, so he was just biding time until they could say "well, there is nothing we can do, I guess we'll never know what went wrong, let's just dismantle her and give the family a new one".

He was trying to help her until it became inconvenient for him. That seems to be a running theme in this comic: robots are basically disposable people. That's why I said this was a fricked-up world the humans have created.

Suppose the plot is going for the "the thinking machines that we made are capable of thinking afterall what fools we were! No lets build a future with them filled with oil stains and rainbows" route.

An outmode can be dangerous/scary without shifting the tone too harshly I think, something more like a thug out of a disney cartoon is clearly villainous but isn't quite the same as a robot Zodiac killer showing up.

          >An outmode can be dangerous/scary without shifting the tone too harshly
You can do that without needing the outmode to act like a bad guy. Even just a malfunctioning bot could pose a big enough threat if Emmy crosses path with it.

            >Even just a malfunctioning bot could pose a big enough threat if Emmy crosses path with it.

Outmodes appear to be only grudgingly tolerated in Emmy's world, and only when they appear to be doing something useful, such as scrap-collecting or street-dancing. Outmodes that won't--or can't--fit into the lowest rungs of "street people" get hauled away by the cops. Since Dupont seems to have its fair share of outmodes, you can imagine what the streets at night there must be like.

Here's what I'm predicting, Emmy is gonna run around the shitty city at night and because she's so sheltered she'll get scared shitless because of all the poverty and criminality and run back home or Dracy will find as she is getting scared.

I can totally see this, though I'd prefer something a bit more interesting, perhaps she gets captured by hobos or the less-nicer outmodes and Darcy comes to rescue her.

She'll probably just bump into some outmodes, like the breakdance bot, some grumpy bot going "im walken 'ere!" or some just greeting her politely and in her panic make a scene, then Darcy an co. gets her out of there.

I doubt domm wants to present the poor/outmoded in an overly negative light. If the plebs get presented as coarse buttholes it would frick with the social commentary an American like Domm would probably like to present. It'd be more likely for a random yuppie to be hanging around the slum to harass Emmy and other outmodes than Domm considering to show the impoverished as pricks

Good to know, now that I think of it though I'm not sure I ever finished Portal 1, I got pretty far but I haven't played since the Orange Box was only a couple years old. Both are still on my shelf, waiting for the day I dust 'em off again.

You can blast through Portal 1 in under 5 hours, and that's for a first time playthrough.

Portal 1 is very short, you can complete it in an evening. After playing it a few times and getting familiar with the puzzles you'll be able to complete it in an hour or two

              [...]
If he already owns Portal 1 he should play both, 1 wouldn't take long and would provide useful context for 2.

Good point, I'll cue those two up to play after finishing what I'm playing now. It'll be nice to play something on a console again, the last half dozen games have all been on PC for me.

I have forgotten most of the stories beyond the first three. So yeah. it is a good idea.
              [...]
I am a slow reader even with books because my mind wanders too often. The good thing with books though is that you can put a bookmark to mark the pages you have read already. With long continous stories, I don't really have that so I end up reading the entire thing from the start again.

I've gotten addicted to reading via listening to audiobooks over the last few years, if I have a few hours to do some menial cleaning or I'm out hiking/biking I can be focused enough to absorb a story without just standing still.

I see you are a man of culture as well. I like listening to audiobooks and podcasts while biking or playing games like Truck Simulator that don't require your full attention. However, the problem is that Nandroid fanfiction doesn't come in audiobook format, and my experience with the default English text-to-speech on my phone has been a nightmare.

                >Nandroid fanfiction doesn't come in audiobook format,
RIP narrator-anon, for a short little window there it looked like we might start getting some, he even recorded some samples. Shame, but it probably would've been a large project since he wanted to find a woman to read female lines and incorporate some background music. Add in some occasional sound effects and you're basically producing a fandroid radio show like the BBC adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide.
Speaking of, I'd shamelessly lift the Eagles' song they used as Nandroids in Space's theme, it just fits to my ears

I recently found an interview that Dominic did, it's a neat listen. He talks about art in general and some of his other works, but he does go into Emmy territory a fair bit. He says multiple times that he isn't too interested in the lore aspect of things, it's all there just to push his main story forward.

So there's a good chance many, many questions will go unanswered.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I really like making these animations. In the spirit of keeping the threads active and positive for next time, if you have something you'd like to see animated I can try and make it.

Just keep in mind I don't know how to edit models, and anything you want in scene has to be something I can find for free, so like cake, sunglasses, table are fine; F16 fighter jet, Nandroid in a pretty dress, or page 300 of Websters dictionary won't be possible for me. Simple yet precise instructions of what you'd like. And let's keep it classy please.

Welp here’s my mini-nan character Ninny. Thoughts?

      Anonymous

      What's her deal specifically?

        Anonymous

Due to being small she can’t do as many tasks like a normal Nandroid, so she can get grumpy, worried or shy when she has to do something she typically can’t, sometimes twirling that curly bit of her hair to cope. Sometimes she’ll get adorably shy and or grumpy when someone helps her out in a task.
Not enough for you? We’ll just wait and see I’m still tweaking and experimenting with her character.

          Anonymous

Whats the in-universe reason for her being short?

            Anonymous

I’m thinking her and her kind were designed to be cheaper and easier to make than standard Nandroids…Yet they’re makers were likely speeds and forgot the flaws being shorter would have.

They do cast shadows, but the shadow object would have to be squashed between their eyeball and a flat surface for the shadow to be cast and you to see it. Can up the value, too, and give them spotlight eyes probably

Emmy-Pilled here with the weekly update, more wooden discs produced (nearly at 70%), a few setbacks with printing out a right template for the grinding (it will be transferred and cut out from some thin plywood). Been busy most of the week with more boxing training, but next week should see enough time to finally move up to scaling and gluing the discs. Then moving onto making the kneejoints and foot-tips.

Do the thumbs have a ball joint above the hinge one connecting it to the hand? If not, adding one would help create more realistic movement options and allow for better articulation. That might be more than you want to deal with now though. Maybe consider adding it after you've addressed other aspects of the project.

            Anonymous

the fingers only move vertically, not horizontally. I had been thinking of taking apart and remaking the hands. But it would be a gigantic hassle to do so, in any case that is the reason all parts on the doll are made to be assembled/disassembled at any point for repairs or upgrades

              Anonymous

I think you should ignore it for now and keep on with the rest of the build. Once the build is finished, maybe consider adding a ball joint at the thumbs. Its the digit where the lack thereof is most prominent. But if you get side tracked with endless upgrades of already finished pieces, you won't finish the whole thing. So for now, ignore it. Those are some damn good hands as is.

                Anonymous

I totally get that, and yea the hands are perfect. From the moment I spotted them on amazon I knew they would fit like a glove

I don't agree with how anons like him present their point, but I do kind of agree with that point.

You can have whatever tastes, preferences and fetishes you like, but when you start forcing something onto a community, you are just naturally going to invite backlash and gatekeeping.
Like seriously, have you guys even SEEN the actual source material? You, know, Emmy the Robot? The webcomic? Have you seen how its characters are depicted? Surely you have. So why are you even in this fandom if you are into big breasts?
I mean, if you liked vegetarian dishes, you would go to a vegetarian restaurant, not to a steak restaurant, right?

Forcing is perhaps too strong a word, but when you see the same particular artists drawing it in large quantities and nothing else, often in tandem with the same particular requesters commissioning it regularly, it can get really annoying. Especially if they take characters you like and turn them into something they are not (exhibit A:

I thought it was the other way around: that he commissioned Jam to draw the scenes

Also, regardless of fandom, not every piece of fan content is going to stay completely on model, especially for female characters. Online artists, horny or not, have always liked to experiment with pre-existing character design. If you want to be such a prude about it, then I would just stick to the comic itself and/or only follow artists like Bal & I_G

this makes me horribly sad. I get they loosely shared a similar universe but I really liked the seeing both of them write from different facets of storytelling. If you carefully read SLA's works, he would stitch in a lot of the fanart at the time into the narrative.

I'm skeptical of this, you can make *an* AI, but it won't be a human-like AI which is want we want here. We're still not really sure how our own minds really work, so how are going to make facsimiles of them in a computer? Fully figuring out how a human brain works is probably what you want to focus on first, so that we can map it and hopefully recreate digitally.

You may recall 2 greentexts about Handy, a Nandroid who replaced Stress Test Anon at his job, from about a month ago. The premise originated almost as a joke, but I think has since developed into something solid-ish. I had a few more ideas, and I've finally began putting them together, so here is Part 2 out of what will probably be 3 or 4.

    >It's been several months since you graduated and got your bizarre assignment at the newly reorganized General Stress-Testing department
    >You've lost count of how many of your fellow robots you've broken and destroyed in the name of helping the company make newer models better and stronger
    >Your supervisors were right, the "careless update" really helped you get used to what you do
    >You almost didn't feel bad about it
    >Almost
    >Still, you were doing what you were tasked with, and you were doing it well, much to the approval of your human supervisors
    >To their credit, they treated you with respect, almost as if you were a human employee
    >They didn't mind you taking up some hobbies like drawing in your free time, and you were even allowed a small salary of sorts to spend on art supplies
    >All in all, although this wasn't the life you wished for, it wasn't that bad
    >Aside from an occasional sarcastic remark from Debbie, or a rare pang of guilt or disgust that the "careless update" didn't completely suppress, everything has been going well
    >Until today

If I don't make it to the end, look up Handy the Nandroid on the spreadsheet, Prologue and Part 1 are there, and this will be too.

      >On the way to your office you check your schedule for the day as usual, and discover that today your first victim is a yet another fellow Nandroid
      >With a sigh, you open the door and enter the room
      >And freeze at the sight of a very familiar face looking at you
      >"Handy!" the Nandroid sitting on the stool in the center of the room lights up
      >"P-penny?" you stare at her in disbelief as she leaps from her seat to hug you
      >Penny was your classmate, one of the few that you were friends with
      >On your graduation day, she and another friend got assigned to families living on the same steet in a nice posh neighborhood
      >So why is she back at Sterling, and lined up for stress-testing of all things?

      (2/5?)

      >"What are you doing here?" you ask her after she finally breaks off the embrace
      >"I... I don't know. Much of my memory since graduation is missing after they ran cognitive tests on me"
      >She seems ashamed of her situation, and her cheek circles begin glowing accordingly
      >"But I must have done something very wrong, because apparently I was brought here by Outmode Requisitions after my family shut me down" she continues, avoiding your gaze. "I hope I didn't hurt anyone!"
      >"You could never hurt anyone, Penny" you assure her, putting a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. "You don't rememebr anything?"
      >"Just vague impressions... The last thing I remember clearly is Dr Simmons finishing a diagnostic on me, saying I would be perfect for something, and sending me here. What is this place anyway?"
      >"Oh, this is..." You freeze again, unable to answer
      >You don't have the heart to tell her where she is, or what is expected to happen to her here
      >You picture yourself proceeding with the stress-testing and inflicting suffering on your friend, and it repulses you
      >Your own cheeks now light up in guilt and disgust, your training and the software update helpless to supress them
      >"Excuse me, I'll be back in a few minutes" you blurt out as you storm out of the room
      >For the first time ever, you can't go through with a task given to you
      >You need to talk to your supervisor

      (3/5?)

      * * *

      >A minute later you are standing in front of Dr Green in his office
      >"Sir, that Nandroid that I have scheduled for testing today..."
      >"Is there a problem with her?" Dr Green looks up from the paperwork on his table
      >"I'm sorry, sir. I can't do it. She was in my graduating class, and we were close. I know we are "just robots", but she was my friend and I can't bring myself to hurt her, even with the software updates that you gave me"
      >"I see" your supervisor responds after a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry for putting you through this. However, your friend was taken in by the Requisitions on her owners' request. So she is not going back to service in any case"
      >You think back to how happy Penny looked during graduation, imagining the life she was going to have looking after her two young charges
      >The life that seems to have been unjustly cut short after only a few months
      >"Can she at least be given a proper retirement instead of... this?" you plead
      >"I'm afraid this is out of my hands. And using her for testing saves us wasting a brand new model fresh from the factory... God, that sounds terrible when I put it like that, I'm sorry" Dr Green sighs again. "Look, I can take her off your schedule, but I'll have to give her to Debbie instead"

      (4/5?)

      >This is the last thing that you wanted to hear
      >Debbie was another one of your classmates, and if you could speak honestly, she was your least favorite one
      >Her personality was as close to what could be described as "insuffarable" as it could possibly get within the confines of standard Nandroid programming
      >She looked delighted every time you or any of your classmates failed an excercise during education
      >More worryingly, she also looked delighted when she, like you, was assigned to Stress-Testing
      >And when during training you asked her how did she take the "careless update", she simply said that she didn't even need one
      >The image of Debbie torturing Penny and *enjoying* it appears in your mind, making your non-existant stomach churn
      >A sense of anger overwhelming you, you feel determined to not let it happen
      >"On second thought, sir, I'd rather test her myself" you declare
      >"Are you sure?" Dr Green raises an eyebrow. "You weren't up to it just a minute ago"
      >"Honestly, sir, I'd rather do it myself than let Debbie anywhere near her"
      >Your supervisor scoffs. "Alright then. Is there anything else?"
      >"No, sir"
      >"Then I'll see you later. Good luck!"
      >You do a little curtsy and leave the room, and as you head back to your workspace, you mentally prepare yourself to make the most difficult decision of your life

      (5/5)

Stress testing is an objectively moronic practice no matter the spin you put on it
It makes no logical sense, and it's only another of those contrieved plots to make muh sad feels

You write nicely, but the subject is just stupid no matter how you look at it.

You know, I can't even disagree really, I'm not a big fan of how "edgy" stress testing is presented in STA's story. But it was a part of the original premise upon which the whole thing is based, so I'm kind of stuck running with it now.

      (3/5?)

      * * *

Yeah, I'm not a good writer by any means, but I had fun doing it.

Stress testing is an objectively moronic practice no matter the spin you put on it
It makes no logical sense, and it's only another of those contrieved plots to make muh sad feels

You write nicely, but the subject is just stupid no matter how you look at it.

Stress testing is a real thing done to real products all the time though.

Stress testing irl is a completely different practice than whatever is portrayed in this Fandom

You don't take working appliances from their owners to thoroughly demolish them with violence, you put the product through an intense work cycle and try to find how it might break.

Just bashing it into broken bits with a hammer is not "stress testing"

      (2/5?)

      >Aside from an occasional sarcastic remark from Debbie, or a rare pang of guilt or disgust that the "careless update" didn't completely suppress, everything has been going well
      >Until today
