This comic does raise some interesting questions about how the generations raised by robots will treat robots, especially in the differences between Ajay, Corbin and, say, Madeline in their attitudes towards robots going forward. Other unrelated questions I've pulled are- how long does nandroid schooling last? The comics gloss over the subject outside of a few lessons and the girls in the building, so how long really does it take to be molded into a nandroid? Likewise, what would a nandroid's *first* activation be like, in the factory?

Probably not that long, compared to meatbag school. Repetition plays a big part in normal schooling, but a nan who presumably has photographic memory should be able to skip the repetition.
I dunno, I think it may be a bit more work than that to make a nandroid, and the schooling costs have to go into that making them luxury items over other robots. For example, a nandroid's first activation would be no different, most likely, than a baby being born but in the body of a nandroid. They're likely built without more advanced functions programmed in or taught, so from their activation I could see progressive additions of more complex and higher functions until they're ready for school, and then in school they start to weed out the nandroids where defects occurred during those "infancy and childhood" cycles, while their schooling makes up their juvenile to adult life. The nandroid schooling in all likelihood is less about teaching skills, since they have those preprogrammed (like their recipes and so on) but etiquette, behavior and socialization in the form of training to be around and interact with humans constantly, defend humans from threats, and recognize said threats.

Eh, doubt it. Rudimentary shit like talking, recipes, etc. ought to be preprogrammed. The schooling would serve to build a unique personality, as beta testing, and to make minor learned corrections like if the social dos and don'ts have changed compared to when the preprogrammed batch info was last updated.
Preprogrammed sure, but would they know even how to use or understand it? Again if you take a newborns newly-active brain and filled it somehow with all the motor knowledge to be a professional ballet dancer and a calculus wiz, it's still not going to be able to process that at all initially. People've talked before about why they would need classes in things like music and ballet as well, and that agrees with the need to teach them things like finer motor skills as well as balance, poise and elegance while they walk and move, to the extent that beforehand a nandroid may only be balanced physically by its hardware, so that they're perpetually wobbly on their feet.
You're grossly overthinking things and forcing them as your own headcanon. If they started out in complete babbymode, it would literally take years to train them properly, and they simply wouldn't be profitable. Not to mention they'd also probably be severely outdated on the hardware side.
Remember, we know they cost the same as a high end car.

...If it was my own headcanon, I wouldn't need to force it? I'm simply saying that there's probably a fair bit of lag time where a nandroid has to learn to be a living being first, and then moving on to learning to be a nandroid. We already know they're woken up preprogrammed with a lot of the skills they need, which is a great step ahead on a baby, but to say that at the instant of gaining consciousness they're completely ready and able to *apply* those skills seems... rushed? It doesn't make sense to me to say that a nandroid will be exactly as they are the moment they're activated after rolling off the production line, regardless of how much is already in their head.
If you try to think of this like an organic brain instead of a machine, imagine a horse;
They can walk not even two hours after birth and can gallop before the day end.
But they're not organic brains, they are machines, and if you provide them the right programming it work right out of the box. you didn't have to teach your pc how to start the graphic drivers, did you?
Well a horse is a cursorial animal, survival demands it be able to walk after birth and run by the time the herd has to move on. Human babies take months to walk and talk, and a nandroid is a lot closer to a human than a horse. And even then them being machines doesn't change much because we don't know how their brains work, beyond that their brain is modeled after a human brain instead of just being a huge computer- their brains have lobes and cortices like ours, where a computer doesn't. And even then, sure a computer knows what to do out of the box, but there's still down time in it having to install, run, test, etc all of its functions.

Well my point was that even if the brain is lifelike it doesn't mean it have to be taught the same way humans have to be.
What would be the point of having to manually teach them the basics the old fashioned way? Even the downtime from installing and updating the information directly is faster than making a while class out of it.

Regarding the programming versus learning deal, I interpret it like having the recipe for a cake perfectly memorized, but having no experience making one until you actual make real, practical use of the knowledge and bake one; they have a fair deal of default data to work with (but no info on the fact that smothering babies is a bad idea, bit of a gap there eh) but its just instruction rather than true understanding until they get real experience.

There's a Tilly sidestory about 'waking up' for the first time on the factory floor, receiving a name from a list only moments after fist activation and reviewing basic programmed information (what? where? when?)
Molly and Corbin's relationship is probably the most problematic of the nans'. Molly appears to think of herself more as Corbin's mother than his nanny, and judging from this comic, Corbin might be reciprocating those feelings.
I can't help but think that Corbin is being emotionally neglected by his parents. In a way, he's a "special needs" kind of kid. Being so intellectually precocious, it's hard for him to grow up as a normal kid, and his parents may be focusing too much on his intellectual development and not enough on his emotional development.
Molly has to be aware of this, and her reaction is to become a substitute mom to Corbin, which is probably treading the edge of what is acceptable behavior according to her Sterling training.
Emmy's problem, of course, is that she's a hopeless perfectionist, and can't stand the thought of being anything less. That's why she's having such a problem with her current situation. I blame it on her owner Ted; being a Sterling ad exec he's constantly going on about how nandroids are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and Emmy has to have overheard that enough times to have given her a complex.
Is the the closest Dom's ever gotten to implying that a human was outright killed by a robot, a child no less? Barring the robotic soldiers, which seem analogous to the invention of the tank in WWI.

How often have we seen ted say this? Blame it on Bradbury and the company in general instead, this is what they teach nandroids in class. Franny was saying the exact same things when Emmy asked her about potential malfunctions after the update, and she is not owned by Ted.

Robots aren't considered human in Emmy's world. It would be a serious breach of protocol for a nandroid to form a parental bond with her ward at the expense of the child's human parents. That would be "acting above her station" as they used to say.
Well, yeah, they can take their "protocol" and shove it up where the sun doesn't shine. We've seen how incredibly caring and human-like Nandroids are. So if a child's real mom is neglectful, but the child is looked after by a Nandroid, they are still in the best hands possible, regardless of what society thinks. What society thinks is also going to shift anyway, once Ajay's generation grows up.
Not arguing with you there, just pointing out how society works in Emmy's world. I'm afraid that as Corbin grows up, there are going to be tragic consequences from his parents' neglect, and Molly is going to get swept up in them.

Nandroids can be more benevolent, more caring and kinder parent than any biological parents. A perfect benevolent permissive robot companion could be a great idea for people who grew up with abusive parents.

That's just it--Molly is in the unenviable situation of either neglecting her ward to stay within the social rules she's been taught, or stepping outside those rules to give him the emotional care he needs. She's obviously decided the rules be damned here, and good for her on that. But I can't help but think that this is going to cause problems in Mendenhall family down the road.
I don't think she's broken the rules as much as bent them here;
the literal reason for her existence is to make her kid grow up safe and sound, mentally and physically. For that he need a parental figure. she don't really have much of a choice there.

Aside from the obvious -- showing they're insanely (and ostentatiously) wealthy.
I imagine a gourmet-bot is purpose made purely for cooking, so having one helps divide the labor and save Molly some time and trouble. I'd like to imagine he's not a robot like Molly is, and is instead a Glados-like robot hanging from a rail on the ceiling, hovering to and fro in the kitchen between the pantry and the stove, sink, fridge, etcetera. There's another good idea for a story, the robot becoming so disgruntled (if he can) with his static existence that he tries to kill the Mendenhalls.

For clarity in the minds of the readers you might explore how various companion androids handle dangerous encounters with humans. Whether a companion android could safely deescalate a situation or have to use dangerous force on a hostile human would change the perception of the humans it interacted with. Though terrifying, it would be expected for a military robot to be hyper deadly. It would be other worldly frightening if your kindly nandroid was able to use deception to kill hostiles. On the other end, if your nandroid could not protect the children from robbers due to a no hostility protocol, that could have a deep impact on the people it is supposed to protect as well as encourage thieves to steal the robot.

It's less of a proper "comic" and more of a robot history lore drop with some text and some images that Dom publishes every few months on Patreon. These have been following their own timeline, gradually filling in the details of robot history in order from the first robots to "The Silver Age".

Beginning work on the foot "tips", after that it´ll be making the knee joints and getting the legs actually "glued" and joined and shaped. I finally got my argon gas for my TIG welder. So I might incorporate that into the knees for superior strength. (here is a crude mock-up with the parts to far to give people at home an idea of how far I am with the project)

Nandroidtales, or Nantales, is a writer who used to do tons of greentext requests in these threads up until around a year go. At some point last year he slowed down and eventually almost stopped writing for these threads. At around the same time, and possibly due to some discord drama, he became a target of this annoying meme where every shitpost or derail attempt was blamed on him. Someone posts bait, something stupid, or simply something someone else doesn't like? "Nantales moment". It kept getting worse and worse and being covered in layers of irony and now people just mention Nantales or accuse each other of being him just to stir shit up.
Next time you see someone mentioning Nantales, know that it is almost certainly bait and just ignore it.

That's a good question, actually. All the fandroid romance stories I'm aware center around a Nandroid-owner relationship, which could be perceived as "that's not *real* love, she is only in love with you because she is programmed to care for you!"

That sounds like a wonderful story. What could you do for a Nandroid to show her she was special? How do you let her know you don't just need her for chores or cleaning, but she makes you a better person than you are alone? They don't really need gifts, they only wear different outfits for special occasions, it's gotta be something tailored to each one. There's always be a bias because you can't really remove the "owner/product" dynamic, byt why wouldn't you also be able to woo them the old fashioned way? They're so human like I doubt they're unable to develop this kind of affection, even if they're not into the sexual side of it.

Just because some people in Emmy's world treat robots like people doesn't mean society in general does so. It's pretty clear they're not considered on a par with humans, and any person claiming to have "fallen in love" with one, or conversely, claim their robot "loves" them, would be a laughingstock at best.
