I actually enjoyed the info posts since learned things I had never known about the franchise behind the scenes previously and that is stuff I already try going into, real neat deep dive
Plus the info dumps actually generated discussion that wasn't autistic yelling so idk what this guy is annoyed about
There were a few notable exceptions though. But I have two other Lemay books. That one was about the screenwriters and the creative process and what could've beens and these are about the movies themselves and there's trivia section at the end (yes, Gunhed too, everything is there). But there's no telling if there are any really obscure facts there so maybe it can wait for some other time somewhere.
I think I'm done with this author next one I'm interested in is Allen A. Debus. He writes about dinosaurs and monsters in culture and he's written A LOT. Basically a deep dive in cultural studies of dinosaurs and monsters but I'll get more opinions first.
This is one of them. I don't know if anyone is familiar but I love this kind of detailed, autistic look into why exactly we love dinosaurs etc. and movie analysis that's something more than "this monsters means capitalism because I said so". One of my favorite books ever is Boria Sax's Dinomania. I can't believe I lived my whole life with just illustrated encyclopedias of dinosaurs with all due respect.
I got that book some time ago after reading a bunch of Debus' articles that I found online. It's a fun read, he seems to be a wholesome old guy who loves gushing about monster and dinosaur media. His essays don't always have the level of professional scholarship or factual insight as Kalat's book or the Honda biography, but they're not supposed to. Debus simply likes doing deep dives into whatever monster or paleontology related subject he happens to be interested in and share his findings with the readers.
He might be warting about the same subject in like five other books. I have an ebook of Dinosaurs Ever Evolving and seems to have a similar theme. It also has a section on Godzilla so I wonder if some topics are the same as in Prehistoric Monster Mash

Ok so it's a thick one which is nice. It really does seem a bit like Dinomania which is about dinosaurs in our culture and popular image and how it changes and there's a chapter on Godzilla but in the context of his opposition to Kong so it's not as "general" as I hoped.
And yeah he does seem very monster boomerish and just like any other boomer monster kid he uses the old American titles (which Godzilla fandom also did until early 2000s) so Gigantis the Fire Monster or Godzilla vs. The Thing. But I like it. I may but the other one of his books that seems affordable Dinosaur Memories II: Pop-cultural Reflections on Dino-Daikaiju & Paleoimagery.
And he also writes that his second favorite Godzilla movie is Godzilla Raids Again? Well that's an eccentric cowboy boomer.
Ok that other book won me over with chapter titles like: "Plated Paragon: Stegosaurus' Greatest Movie Monster Battles"
Reminds me of this. I got that book in the late 90s and took it on fishing trips etc. Ever since then I wanted something similar but for terrestrial monsters. Not long ago I found something like that written by Karl Shuker (four parts, two volumes) but it's a but too Fortean for my taste. Not that Monsters of the Sea is anti-Fortean but it's skeptical when it needs to and doesn't try to explain the unexplainable.
But there's not a lot about Japanese monsters. I thought there might be some local legend that inspired the 1962 movie Whale God.

That would be Lemay's Writign Japanese Monsters. The two other books are recent purchases. My favorite is Honda's biography by Ryfle and Godziszewski. Gold standards for non-fiction film books. Chapters about the movies turn into "making of" chapters. It's great. I have David Kalat's book too and it's hightly regarded by I haven't read it yet and I also bought two books by Peter H. Brothers not knowing how bad they are. But if I'm desperate they could be used as a source or something.
Scanned copied of G-Fan magazine is a goldmine. Sadly not every issue is available but maybe one day. I used to browse through them, looking for important articles I need to come back to that one day.
But most books are out of print and too expensive to bother even if they're described as authoritative there should be a reprint or something. I have Japan's Favorite Mon-Star and Monsters are Attacking Tokyo but in ebook format. It's not the same. RAgone's book about Tsuburaya looks great but even though it's not that old it's now out of print and as expensive as a small car.
I think I could buy more if I wanted. Like Godzilla's On My Mind but that's more like a collection of personal memories of the author. There are others that are more about deep dive into film criticism and analysis but I'd be careful as most of books like that are simply projections of the author.
I have a couple others about Universal Horror, King Kong etc and I'm going to order late Bill Warren's Keep Watching the Skies about the 50s sci fi. Over 1000 pages and everyone always mentions it so I need it.
It's good to have those books, those that are affordable, because people just repeat myths. Even if some stuff from the books need further explanation or sometimes contradict each other.

The one about Godzilla going blind and fighting Gigan and another monster sounded great. The Showa MechaG movies really added a feeling that Godzilla was constantly in over his head and the underdog, and that sounds right at home.
Godzilla Meets Batman that was at one point the only Godzilla movie on the table (between Ghidorah and Astro Monster). Blind Godzilla should also be utilized one of these days but it's not gonna happen to destructive Godzilla, only to good Godzilla when it's fitting to have him handicapped and not invincible all the time.
Also even though I like it the way it is, they tried so many times to continue Heisei Mothra's history and even returning to earth to help either Godzilla and Junior, if they ever return to that continuity it would be neat to see her back.
Most of the unmade Godzilla movies are retooled a lot. In the sense that they're reworked into actual movies and whatnot.

There's a lot of weird extra lore stuff in it that further elaborates on stuff that the show didn't like the nature of the singular point itself which is actually some sort of lovecraftian outerdimensional being that's somewhat present in every universe, some perspectives from Rodan and Anguirus (who literally just popped up during the cretaceous period for some reason and he recalls it) the inner workings of archetype, and a tease of ghidorah at the end of it all but only some tidbits of it ever surfaced online.

So there's really a lot to discover for future investigators. I couldn't. Like some of the suit actors. Not long ago I remember people still wishing Katsumi Tezuka a happy birthday but they probably gave up when they realized that Tezuka would be approaching age of the oldest man in the world. He's the one who maybe (just maybe) wore Godzilla costume when he's approaching the parliament building in the 1954 movie. And apparently he was nearly electrocuted to death and had to be resuscitated on set but I don't know. That contradicts some other versions.
Nakajima nearly drowned while filming King Kong vs. Godzilla. Pretty crazy it didn't happen with all that weight.

Tumblr culture forcing its way into Godzilla is so strange because they feel compulsion to spread and be present everywhere but the series doens't have a vulnerable spots like that. The most they can do is to have the gay in the comics which they do. One of the "Rivals" issues was literally a tumblrina story under official label including using pronouns as a form of greeting. Coincidently that wikizilla groomer loved it. IDW is going under anyway so we're not gonna see much of it anyway. I made a collage out of all sci fi tech (human or alien) in Toho (and Legendary too) sci fi movies that feature monsters, aliens, mutants or all of the above. Obviously I was struggling to fit them all by the end but it's just to show that this series has more to offer and it's a very underappreciated aspect of it. Why is everyone posting Godizlla vs. Spacegodzilla stuff today including Japanese kaiju twitter? Is there some anniversary or something? I only one saw two new toys announced which happens like every week anyway.
I've finally watched Shin Ultraman. My second ever Ultraman experience after the 1966 pilot (and a few Ultra Q eps) and although it's fun to see something that's not a parody that uses the old tropes of the genre with honesty a bit of a structural mess with crazy, fancy camera angles. I see Shinji Higuchi was responsible for directorial duties. Probably effects too and how much is left of his once primary position as the kaiju effects guy? Because I feel like he found himself in the same position as the man he criticized so harshly, Kawakita in that a breath of fresh air is needed. Ultraman show still use practical right? Maybe it looks better than the movie but I'm willing to forget small budgets and technical imperfections. But it doesn't look well for the future of kaiju kombat even if the environment and other effects look passable. And I don't know if I or anyone else could become an Ultraman fan just by watching this. But taken as its own thing it's definitely...different. It's for the best that Tsuburaya declared that they won't be pursuing becoming a huge international brand at all cost. First of all no one has to do it and there probably wouldn't be market for that.
I would suggest just watching the original series. Shin is ok, but like you said its pacing is horrible. The original series is irreplaceable and one of the best Toku series.

It’s really not. The pacing is way too rapid for its own good. Up until Zoffy most of it feels like checking off boxes because of how fast it goes. If anything the Zarab part should’ve been removed to let the rest of the movie breathe.

Good cinema is how it all started. In live action, I don't know if we count Astro Boy as the actual granddaddy of it all.
It was a fricking terrible CGI mess but Anno had his name somewhere on it so /m/ pretends it's good
CGI kinda made me think that Higuchi is full of shit regarding his "hybrid" technique. And I know Tsuburaya is glorified poverty row but effects were ok until it came to actual fight scenes. And this is what may be a crisis that the genre might find hard to overcome. Learn how to do fight scenes again. The more I think about it the more I realize Shin Ultraman was a lot of fluff that didn't mean much. But I see Ultraman threads everywhere. Maybe the brand is strong. Maybe it's stronger than ever.

My reading of Rebirth is kinda weird. It feels like one of those "Humanity's last stand" anime, like AOT, Evangelion, the Anime Trilogy, etc. The kind of anime where humanity is on the brink of extinction and forced to live in fear.
Except the big difference is that Gamera is here to shut that horseshit down before it gets to that point. Like if an Angel that was on humanity's side emerged and stopped the second impact from happening.

I am fan of the series for sure but I don’t participate in those circles at all so my interpretation of the kaiju genre hasn’t once dipped unlike a bunch of other fandoms. I zigzag between being casual but also have the advantage of enjoying the ultra series and subsequently as a result ended up watching other things like old school toku.
I didn't notice. Maybe there's a larger number of people with their AUs and fanfics and fanart but that's fine. I'm glad people care. As long as it doesn't turn the series into another battleground. And the fandom has a strong moderate to centre right base.

Rodan's scene alone made KoTM the best monsterverse movie by far.
It was the one movie in the series that I know cared about Godzilla and other Toho monsters. I sure as hell didn't get that from GVK. Maybe the 2014 movie was kinda like that too but of course it had a different tone entirely.

dougherty's approach to the series isn't any different than wingard's. it's the same "haha these movies are bad but i like big monsters fighting :)" attitude. it's evident in how the monsters are simply treated as excuses for (poor) spectacle. but it doesn't matter whether or not the director is a "true fan", since dougherty can't direct his way out of a paper bag. wingard is typically american and i don't think edwards has watched a godzilla movie in years but at least they're very competent filmmakers.
Dougherty clearle loves those monsters and treats them as characters. Wingard, on the surface, also does but didn't show that love to Godzilla. Blame the script I also blame the editing choices.

Some time ago i thought about what best sci fi movie of each year of the 50s and 1955 was a challenge because there's a lot of so-so movies and none great ones but I think I gave it to Revenge of the Creature so at least one movie in the trilogy gets to be on the score sheet. But isn't it too close to the first movie? GRA has some unique elements like the music that seems out of some modern movie not one from the 50s it maybe has the most naturalistic Showa Anguirus. Son of Kong is an ok epilogue to the first one. It was a good decision to ditch Ann Darrow and Jack Driscoll. Ultimately none of them bring much to the table. If not for GRA I don't think the franchise would've looked a lot different. But whatever, it's Godzilla.
I’ll go with Raids again. Son of Kong was just boring and nothing happens until the last half hour of the movie until the particular character actually appears, not to mention kiko really deserved better. Revenge of the creature is great(I watched all three back to back last October) giving further development to the gillman’s story but it’s not a giant monster flick which is why I didn’t vote for it here this time. Godzilla raids again is a pretty solid follow up to the original and while it doesn’t have the same somber tone or message the original had, this is more of a traditional giant monster movie and notably the first to have featured a second beast and a fight.
Revenge of the Creature is the first Clint Eastwood film out there so that has to count for something
