Even though this is an iconic cartoon, I never really tried watching it and I think that's because whenever I've tried watching adult cartoons like Family Guy or Robot Chicken, it's basically just sex jokes and raunchy humor throughout with nothing else beyond that and I've always assumed The Simpsons was just "sex, sex, sex" for 22 minutes. Is the show just sex and poop and cursing or is there more to it than just that?

First I've ever heard anyone say that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIriEXo36SI

(The clip is actually 4:25 long, it repeats part of itself for some reason after that.)

I think I assumed it had just as many sexual, cursing, and gross-out humor as Family Guy, because it's been compared to Family Guy a lot

Family Guy started off as a slightly edgier Simpsons but then became extremely edgy later on

Other way around, you dumbass. The Simpsons not only came first, it was HUGE in its heyday, breaking new ground for cartoons and sitcoms alike. There's a reason the classic seasons are hailed as a top contender for THE greatest show of all time.

If the show has zero sexual and gross-out jokes, then why is it an adult cartoon? I thought it was a requirement that every single adult cartoon had to mention boobs and farts and having sex with one another for many scenes of each episode? The Nutshack was filled with that stuff

the best way to describe old school Simpsons is that it's what all the ecelebs pretend every milquetoast kidslop cartoon is: fun cartoon with loads of adult jokes that are cleverly written instead of trying to be some edgy "I'm for 14-year-old adults" adultslop
Except it was actually that and ran with it, and had some really good writers behind it too, instead of being a "this show for 7 year olds has a joke that might make adults watching chuckle because their kids won't get it, this means this show is actually made for adults and validates a 30-something autist shaped like a beanbag chair making a 4 hour video essay on it" kind of show.
It was shocking to parents just because cartoon characters swore and reality ensued instead of being cartoon slapstick, but in retrospect, it was really restrained by modern adult cartoon standards to the point I can imagine it airing on Cartoon Network primetime these days just because no one except the FCC cares if a character says "damn."

No, The Simpsons is truly the perfect show. It balances comedy and emotion very well. There is like zero sex/gross-out jokes and the characters are actually fully developed. Just watch the first episode it's full of so much heart. The first 8 seasons are great.

      >There is like zero sex/gross-out jokes
There is gross-out humor but they kept it confined to two specific spaces (Itchy & Scratchy and the Halloween specials).
There is also sexual humor sprinkled through and it's sometimes the focus of whole episodes, but it's never overt like South Park or the McFarlane shows.

Western pop culture has been permanently tinged by Simpsons references and memes and not a single one of them seems to be based on "sex, sex, sex"

....So I'm sorry to inform you that you're a complete fricking moron.

It's 90s edgy, which includes depictions of dysfunctional families and the occasional depiction of blood and gore. Early Simpsons tried being a wholesome family sitcom before season 3 had jokes every 1 minute, but still felt earnest.

Classic Simpsons nowadays is basically what Cinemaphile wants cartoons to be
    >stylish and imaginative like a children's cartoon
    >intelligent and mature like a more adult show without relying on vulgarity
    >often had pretty good animation for some reason

Post-season 7 Simpsons is where it starts trying to be Family Guy
