i'm glad i'm not the only one. i rewatched 1 and 2 a few years ago and was surprised by how bad 1 was. 2 is an absolute banger.

Neither are accurate. The Riggs/Murtaugh stuff is great. The scene at the dinner table, the suicide jumper, trying to get the kids to tell them about the guys who blew up the house? All good stuff. That's what keeps it kino. But the cop story/villains are actively shit and unmemorable aside from the fight at the end which goes on for too long.
Lethal Weapon 2 is superior in every conceivable way.

I also like Murtaugh's storyline in it as opposed to what they give him in 4. I love 4, but the underwear bit at the start makes no sense, feels forced. And the panic about thinking Chris Rock wants to frick him is funny, but kind of weak for a running bit, and the chinese sheltering never really goes anywhere meaningful.
I think having him reckon with being a cop, and seeing black gang violence in his own neighborhood, and how he deals with the guilt of having shot a kid, with the duty of being a cop and keeping that shit away from his children, is way more compelling for him. Plus that scene with him and Riggs on the boat is one of the best scenes in the series.
