Confronting a suspect with evidence and logic doesn’t fall under duress. If Columbo said something like “confess or I’ll go to work on your face with this hammer until you look like a pizza with no cheese” that would be duress
>meets the suspect at their home, office, country club >invited to come inside because "of course I'd like to help the police" >duress
They all should have lawyered up right away.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my client was repeatedly harassed by a curmudgeonly old detective until he was forced to confess after his actions were uncovered and presented to him using deductive reasoning and logic!
>That transphobic old man repeatedly dead named me during the process and insulted my appearance meticulously as he explained how he clocked me.
Ladies, Gentlemen, karens and Non-binary Otherkin if the jury as you can clearly see his disgusting old bigot committed so many hate crimes against my client their murder spree was retroactively justified. I rest my case. >Jury returns with motion to dismiss.
anon columbo was the most polite police inspector ever depicted, he's always calling people sir. The only duress a suspect might feel is from their own guilt
Frick you Black person. Most of them confess only to Columbo’s ears. When backed up by their lawyers, and realising how much booze and how many women they have to lose, you can forget about a confession.
Yeah who is the jury going to believe? The seasoned detective with a heart of gold and a solid track record or the rich butthole on the stand? Not to mention the arrest and confession gives the police ample time to go rooting around the murderers house for evidence to back Colombo up. No, they’re fricked
You don't know what you're talking about. Columbo never, ever goes alone. He knows he'd an old cranky manlet with a dislike for guns, he won't last a second against an ill intentioned criminal. Usually there are always three or four cops sneaking around him at all times, and when the victim confesses, he has also multiple witnesses that can testify against him
You only have to be read your rights if being asked incriminating questions while in custody. The former he pretty firmly does, the latter not so much.
There's a comfy Italian show called Don Matteo where Terence Hill plays a priest who always has to solve cases for the incompetent carabinieri while simultaneously offering spiritual advice to members of his community. It was on TV all the time here, and it was really nice and wholesome.
Another favorite of mine was Heartbeat, which is about a small-town cop dealing mostly with petty crime in his rural community. It's set in the 60s and the soundtrack consists mainly of rock and pop songs from that period. Amazingly comfy show.
>that murder she wrote episode where they tried to lynch some dumb Native American who tried to claim he owned the whole tone
Was both jarring and tone and fricking hilarious in its absurdity
Guys like you who are exactly the types who would underestimate him and end up with him deducting circles around you. The whole point of his character is that he’s a seemingly simple man, maybe even a little slow, when he’s much sharper under the surface. And you fell for it…
He doesn’t, at least not in most cases. His modus operandi is knowing who the culprit is as soon as he meets him and then coming up with ways for the culprit to confess or be caught in a criminal act.
>paul merely glances at the preparator sitting with the spectators >prep, in a mad frenzy, dashes up to the stand, swears himself in and screams "THAT'S RIGHT I DID IT YA BASTARDS!" >burger looks shocked as perry is proven right again for the 138th time, he was sure perry was wrong this time
It's good, but the episodes almost always end in a corny way with an overly-dramatic confession. The audience is supposed to try to figure out which of the guest characters is guilty.
It's better than I expected. I figured because it was a late 50's show that Mason would be very moralistic and crusading when in fact he's pretty shifty almost bordering on sleezy considering how much he lies to cops and pulls bullshit in courts.
He instantly figures out the murder and you can usually see the moment of understanding cross Falk's face.
Then he spends the rest of the episode gathering evidence and poking holes in their pathetic alibis.
If you think that they'd get out of it in court, you're a moron that didn't watch any of the show beyond your favorite open mouthed youtube "personality's" equally moronic review.
Beyond reasonable doubt moron, anything less than cast iron physical evidence and eyewitnesses murder charge is incredibly hard to stick. Any little mistake in procedure and a good lawyer the rich bastard hires will get the case thrown out, or make a deal for a lesser charge.
Did this shit just show up on some streaming service? Everyone's all hyped up over Colombo now despite no one knowing or caring about it for years until a couple of months ago.
Yeah that's the one where he goes to London that has pussy galore in it.
but the murderer confesses before even being shown the "evidence" and confesses to relieve his overwhelming guilt and anxiety, mirroring his role as Macbeth.
My country used to rerun the early simpsons seasons on loop. This went on for several years, and I heard grandpa simpson reference columbo in the exact same episode about a hundred times. It would've been weird to never check it.
95% of non Black murders are commited by a friend, colleague, family member or lover of the victim so it's not that hard to solve in most cases. Just find a motive.
The problem of all Columbo murderers is that they are the only ones who would benefit from the murder and they mostly try to blame it on some hypothetic burglar or a freak accident.
My grandfather was nicknamed 'Columbo' because he had a glass eye and the same thick hair, he would also turn up at your house randomly and talk about nonsense, and just as you thought he was about to leave he would turn around and start a whole new fricking conversation. He also happened to love the show, but for some reason insisted on recording the 3am showing instead of just watching it one of the five channels that were showing it during the day.
After Columbo arrest them it's the prosecution's job to document all the evidence he found and assemble it into a case they can present in court. They've got plenty of time to do it and Columbo can direct them to all the witnesses he spoke to so that they can be called to testify.
>*suspect strangles columbo and shoves his lifeless corpse in an oil barrel*
well shucks if anyone has seen my good friend the lieutenant please let me know
The majority of cases end with plea deals before ever reaching court. That aside, Columbo's job isn't to convict people, it's to open them up as suspects because once you're a suspect you lose certain rights. Then, the real investigating begins. I appreciate you making a thread though.
but ya see judge i just got this feeling right and i mean who else likes candle sticks? his wife yea at the start i thought maybe the wife, but shes a boyscout see always up in the hills they use flashlights theese days,i know i know shes bought over 2thousand candles in the last year but something just didnt add up,all the candles she bought were scented this murder weapon was a non scented candle and that leads us to Mr Jigaboo its well known he carries an umbrella and at first i tought maybe its for the dog
sir, is anything you have non circumstantial evidence that could apply to all parites involved
well i have this hunch see it just
ok ok mr colombo for the 5th time do you have ANY evidence other than your testimony here today
So I'm watching Columbo through for the first time and I'm noticing that literally EVERYONE but Columbo(as far as main cast not bit parts/extras) has blue eyes. It's statistically improbable. Is this systemic racism in action?
Blue eyed guys get awa with everything
My racemixing prostitute mother couldnt find a an actual non-mutt white man so now I have brown eyes and all my siblings are blue eyes
It's pretty comfy to me. Not the kind of thing that's gonna elicit your undivided attention through the whole runtime of every episode but I'm on the last episode of S2 and I've only noped out of one episode because it was boring the shit out of me(the football episode). Might be less interesting to you if you don't recognize all the old hollywood actors they used. Was a trip seeing old Myrna Loy in one episode.
can the police be sued for entrapment because i feel like a lot of episodes could have been twisted that columbo bullied the murderer into doing things.
entrapment only applies to a police officer causing someone to do something illegal that they wouldn't otherwise do. Columbo never intimidated them, he never forced them to do anything by any method that would be illegal for a man of his position.
yeah but a good lawyer could twist it in the courtroom that the murderer is actually innocent but felt forced to act in a certain way because of Columbo`s implications

Confronting a suspect with evidence and logic doesn’t fall under duress. If Columbo said something like “confess or I’ll go to work on your face with this hammer until you look like a pizza with no cheese” that would be duress

Wait, was colombo actually on the police force or is he a private-I? Would confession made to a PI hold up legally?
Columbo was a homicide detective. He was absolutely on the police force.
he expressly says multiple times "L.A.P.D."
He didn't read them their rights yet, not admissible.
You only have to be read your rights if being asked incriminating questions while in custody. The former he pretty firmly does, the latter not so much.

It's free on imdb tv or something like that and a few months ago Amazon Prime was advertising it on its front page but I don't think it is anymore.
I think people are just recognizing that most modern media is shit and some old stuff is good.
Everyone knew about Columbo you fricking zoomer
shit, this show's coloration makes it so fricking comfy to watch

do murderers irl wait for a Poirot situation to happen where 10 people want the same guy dead and then take their chance?

Fun Fact: During the filming of a Columbo episode, Jack Cassidy actually confessed to the real-life murder of a transient hobo.
>*every judge dismisses case out of court in 2 minutes due to lack of evidence*
>zoomers like Columbo now
What happened?
The majority of cases end with plea deals before ever reaching court. That aside, Columbo's job isn't to convict people, it's to open them up as suspects because once you're a suspect you lose certain rights. Then, the real investigating begins. I appreciate you making a thread though.
>once you're a suspect you lose certain rights
Do what now?
>it's to open them up as suspects because once you're a suspect you lose certain rights
america sure is a strange little place
>once you're a suspect you lose certain rights
No?
Suspects can recant confessions but once you get a signed confession that’s basically 70% of the work done. The rest is up to the state to convict.
It's embarassing how bad at media literacy people got.
Most of the killers are too proud to pull that shit though.

Ayo, I got one more question for you deadass my guy
This makes me irrationally angry.
Based Columbo, teaching people to not speak with police without lawyer since 60s
can the police be sued for entrapment because i feel like a lot of episodes could have been twisted that columbo bullied the murderer into doing things.
entrapment only applies to a police officer causing someone to do something illegal that they wouldn't otherwise do. Columbo never intimidated them, he never forced them to do anything by any method that would be illegal for a man of his position.
>columbo bullied the murderer into doing things
The murderer had always killed before they had even met Columbo
yeah but a good lawyer could twist it in the courtroom that the murderer is actually innocent but felt forced to act in a certain way because of Columbo`s implications
Let me guess, you're one of those "Jigsaw did nothing wrong" contrarians.
Holy hell the football episode sucked ass
Can't believe no one has mentioned big chungus yet.

Fandoms can ruin show easily. You already know this.

Stop being autistic.
You know exactly what I mean when I say "ruined", you're being just as autistic as me.
I'm not the one who can't watch a 30 year old show without being paranoid about 15 year olds enjoying it too.
