Conversational humor and joke humor are two different things.
I'm guessing Roiland never picked up on that memo.
I don't think the man picks up much
just children
Pretty much. Some people can craft funny jokes but can't think on their feet, others can make witty, off the cuff remarks and observations which are funny in the moment, but can't write a joke which is amusing in the context of a stand up routine or a script. Just like with drawing, some people can sketch unique compositions which tell a story, but struggle to develop fully realized illustrations, while others can render things beautifully, but their underlying drawing is mediocre and would have zero appeal as a sketch.
Care to elaborate on that though ?
One is more situational than the other. It's why stand up is its own thing Still
he is funny because he has someone to bounce off of
his humor comes from leading someone in on a response you would not expect
seemingly normal conversation turning into a hypothetical mire of the mind
it is funny
Because he values didacticism over comedy.
who the frick is that
>purposefuly enter a thread about a person you don't know
>"eermmm, who is this guy?? Are you a moron or something??"
Just because we don't recognize some random white homosexual looks like doesn't know we don't know who he is.
Then maybe look at the replies first, then you would know who he is

(OP)
Riffing is a very different branch of comedy from telling bits from start to end.
Look at Nick Mullen for another example of that.
Zach is great at riffing on something in the moment and using small things as springboards, but building that longer format comedy from scratch is an entirely different skill.
lol I was also gonna mention Nick. Everyone talks about how he should have his own show or something, when I guarantee 90% of his bits would be like Family Guy tier if they were made into an actual scripted bit. Some things are just funnier as riffs. Still, I do want to see an actual production of the Chris Benoit story, though.
>Smiling Friends is... le bad
Is this where we are now?
It was disappointing.
Zach was very self-aware of the bad aspects of modern adult animated comedies, but then made a show that for all intents and purposes, ended up being a very standard 2020s adult animated comedy.
This is the board that likes hazbin hotel and has daily pedophilia threads
I don't care about your eceleb, nor does he care about you despite what the parasocial friendship you've established makes you think
Who
I don't know who this is but I'm guessing it's someone who writes funny jokes and OP is just being contrarian
Zach is a handsome fella
Who the frick is this supposed to be? moron.
Zach Hadel is the living embodiment of the smug, detached Gen-X ethos.
I'd venture to guess he hasn't felt a single sincere conviction about anything since childhood. He exists as a polyp upon the colon of culture, satiating himself on the perceived failures of others (i.e. "The Man") while adding nothing new to the discourse aside from ironic complaint.
He's an insecure, lost, rapidly aging burnout who silently believes he could do a better job of writing than the professionals in the industry. Yet he lacks the ambition and ability to actually enter the very industry he's obsessed with. He chooses instead to frick around and make cartoon piss-takes well into middle age.
He's an awful, awful person. I've met thousands just like him, and the last thing we need is for these people to gain any attention for their navel gazing.
why do you act like he killed six million israelites
He could've easily suckled on the money tit of the oneyplays videos/ podcast for the rest of his life but chose to still make silly animations and pursue making a tv show
If you want a real wash up phony look at arin hanson
A bit late for that. The internet was built by nerds, which is to say fans of things that do not generally produce them.
Yeah, the way he makes fun of principled people is the only thing I don't like about him.
Newgrounds and early YouTube animators in general are very much of that South Park MTV generational ethos of "I'm too cool to care about things or have non-ironic opinions"
who?
I think he's funny too but just because you're funny looking doesn't mean you can write funny jokes.
He's funny in conversation with his friends, like most people. In conversation there's a lower threshold for what's considered funny because of the off the cuff nature of riffing with your friends. Like: "wow that was funny, he just came up with that quick response off the top of his head".
Being a talented comedy writer is different because the expectations for a scripted show are higher. The jokes have to be clever or fresh, and well executed.
When you spend a year writing 10 episodes of a relatively short comedy show and you're re-using the "character screams loudly at the end of a scene for shock" gag, maybe you're just not a talented writer. My personal prediction is that Smiling Friends will lose it's appeal by season 3, because I doubt that Zach and Michael will be able to keep it interesting.
That said, Zach's drawings are funny and I enjoy the use of multiple animation styles a lot. I just hope they prove me wrong about the writing.
