I took it to mean that Marvel, or at least Kevin Feige, no longer cared about the comics, their continuity, or their continued existence, to the point the people of Marvel Pictures were prepared to throw out the comics and usurp their universe designation for their own film series. A symbolic way of telling audiences the comics are dead, and only the movies matter now.
