expen4bles, the future of AI upscaled piracy, and the most surreal thing you will ever experience

This is an updated and improved version of a post I made here the other night. I am, so far, the only one who has noticed this.
Ever since I saw AI (image models, to be precise, but for convenience we will refer to it as AI) upscaling of video, I knew the tech could and would be used to improve camrips, which are usually borderline unwatchable. I have known this for years, and have been waiting to see it happen.
Surprisingly, the topic hasn't been discussed at least in most discussion areas reachable by google. (Frick the current state of the internet, the death of forums, the partitioning and walled gardening- etc.)
As of a few days ago, there is a camrip out that is indisputably AI upscaled. I can tell that work went into this. It's properly stabilized instead of shaking, for one thing. There's no flicker. I don't think AI could remove someone walking in front of the camera, but that doesn't always happen in cams, and we don't see it here. There are a few portions where the audio jumps. There may be missing scenes (more on that later). But the quality - WHEN IT COMES TO DETAIL - is good. It's at least 720p, which is the level you can stream it at. It's better than many DVDs I own.
Now, here's the surreal part. I think someone either goofed with the upscaling, didn't know how to configure it properly, or wasn't an AI nerd like some of the people I know, because THE WHOLE FRICKING THING SUBTLY LOOKS LIKE IT WAS RAN THROUGH A MIDJOURNEY ART FILTER.

It is a COMPLETE MINDFRICK that sinks in the longer you watch. It's most obvious on some explosions, people's faces (where it seems to have been turned up- makes sense, in a camrip, people's faces being blurry is really annoying and most ai models are tuned to fixing faces, so it tracks that the faces would be the most improved), and reflections/lighting.
The plot and acting are also so bad that they go beyond human effort and seem like chat GPT spat it all out.
    >In other words, watching this is the closest you will get to a 100% AI generated feature film, until one actually comes out.
I would give details on what team released this cam, but I have no idea. You could look at the cams currently on torrents, and hope you find it by accident, or you could stream it here. This is not an advertisement, flixtor is a legit pirate streaming site, they get their money selling VIP memberships and not by allowing malware or ads. I use a safe browser with adblock and AV anyway, but I've never had an issue with them.

I encourage you to experience the weirdest shit you will see in a while. Warning: will damage brain.
to repeat myself from last time, "this is a historical event for movie piracy not unlike the shooting of archduke Ferdinand or the Roman’s discovery that you can do the greek invention, sex, with women. eventually this camrip will vanish and you will have lost the opportunity to sit down for the most cursed film watching experience since that Christmas train thing"

Oh yeah, the missing scenes thing. I think scenes are missing but it could also be that the plot is so disjointed and bad, it just feels that way

I watched this at the cinema because a friend of mine worked on it, looks like all the scenes are here, movie is just that bad, btw @ 37 minutes in, Statham abs are shopped

    >or wasn't an AI nerd like some of the people I know,
i say this because the people i know, if they did this, which they have no interest in (i asked) would have trained a brand new model on the other expendables movies + action movies in general, which would have prevented the midjourney effect.

Well yeah, AI upscalers aren't magic, they can't bring out details that aren't in the original camrip. The source video used for upscaling was probably just dogshit quality and this is the best they could do with it.

      Anonymous

      yes, of course.
but because of the generic model dataset being used, it all looks like it's been filtered through one of those art filters. not overtly, but you start to notice it filtering through, which is part of the mindfrick.

        Anonymous

That's what happens when you try to upscale a dogshit quality video too much. I've played enough with AI video upscalers to know this look.

a purpose-configured model could give way better results, i think. it just needs to be trained on similar movies and cinematography styles.

NTA but you seem seriously misinformed on the abilities of AI upscaling. You're not gonna be able to do much to a goddamn cam rip

              Anonymous

you need to look at what happened to this camrip then, because it's pretty much DVD quality. the only issue is the subtle shit that crept in from having ALL THE INTERNET DIGITAL ART IN THE WORLD included as part of the model.

I can believe it, but I'm not going to visit the website to check. How about more screenshots? See if there's any signs since AI is really bad at text

it's not going to give you anything that blatant- it's running an upscale filter, not generating text.

it's a little hard to pinpoint in still frames, but this is obviously one where it went a little hard with the oil painting

The "oil painting" look is probably just a result of overly denoising the upscale.

this is andy garcia, not zelensky, but it seems to have gotten a bit confused. people's eyes look wrong a lot (part of the unsettling effect)

You peasants will just consoom anything, the AI upscale looks absolute dogshit. The tech is simply not there yet, there's too much uncanny valley going on and only low iq subhumans can't see it, which explains a lot considering you're consuming this absolute slop to begin with. It's also unsurprising that you literal animaloids can't even enunciate a paragraph like a normal person, this is why and how Hollywood makes a shitload of money off of you thirdworlders.

Camrips dating back years are still pretty well seeded (for some reason), so training a network with these and their web releases should be possible. The problem is pirates are lazy (is this really a surprise). For every million pirates there is maybe one person contributing to the scene.

      Anonymous

i don't think training a network on "what the problem looks like" + "what it should correctly look like" is a thing. if it is, my apologies.
i think it's just training it on high def media and then the model tries to make the input material look 'more' like what it's trained on.

People have been using VEIA/TVAI to fix up camrips for years now. No different that going in and readjusting the levels/color to correct those deficiencies. Some cams even have 4K releases.

The issue its that it was exported with frame interpolation at 60 fps. No ai needed. Just the usual blur smear, sharpening and frame interpolation. You can do all of that with davinci free software

I get what you're saying, but this tech already exists. It's basically just lighting and smoothing filters which have been entirely common place for years now-- and yes I mean for moving video.
Now it seems better than some, bit worse than others I've seen. It also relies on darker-lit movies to work really well which is why explosions are so bad.
In the beauty-filter scene this is why most videos are recorded indoors for filters, because the "natural lighting" of the sun, it getting brighter/darker depending on where you are in a shadow or time of day exposes the filter.
So you control lighting with a small rig, indoors, and the filter will slim your waist, remove your wrinkles and acne, apply makeup, give you breasts, thighs, an ass. Shit there are fricking feet filters and they keep up with movement pretty fricking well.
And this is all able to be used during a live stream.

Running a movie through an AI upscaler is basically how all those bluray rips of 80s movies were first done. The incessant smoothing, the gradient shades in the "outlines" of people and objects where the program was deciding which is which and applying itself.
The audio is still pretty shit-- though that might be partial to blame on modern mixing and old men mumbling their lines.

So I mean, yeah, I get it. But I watched 20 straight minutes and didn't get mindblown at all. I've seen this shit in the e-beauty market already and those girls do it live and keep inside the boundaries.
And I'm somebody who is very pro-AI; I love the LLM, I love the advent of filters. Since I was a kid and learned about photoshop my first initial reaction was
    >I hope we get this for video soon
And CGI kinda filled that gap, digital rendering software kinda filled the other gaps-- but now it's gonna be for everybody.

The dangers are, of course, fricking awful. All you need for proof is to look at the thirsty men in an IG model's comments. Filters have changed beauty more than any photoshopped model or airbrushed ad.

On a tangent, how good is AI at cleaning up the sound? Some rips are unwatchable because of poor sound recording + crowd noises.

does ai upscaling not work very well on low res videos or something? all i see mostly is autists leaving their computer rendering for 2 days to upscale 1080p

I dl'd a torrent of Pete & Pete that turned out to be upscaled. Frick it looked terrible, but the creator was so pleased with himself (in the nfo). Thankfully there was an alternative to dl.

I remember camrips being shit in the 00's, thought they couldn't get any worse.
Tried one recently and it's got fricken ADs inserted into it lol.
And inserted isnt' the correct word, because they don't stop the movie to play them, so you miss out whatever happened during the ad break. AND there's no volume transition, so you might have a quiet scene and then "CYKA BLYATTTTTTT" blows your ears away.
