Harley tortured Joker while he was under he care at Arkham Asylum, because she wanted to push him into spilling his guts so she could make money selling books about "cracking" him. Once he escapes he kidnaps her and torture her back into submission, turning her into a bimbo bawd that he pimps out. She in turn tries to make him jealous with other men prompting him to get physically abusive.
