Do you really think Ghost in The Shell is more famous than Scarjo? Moreover, lots of people who do recognize it won't go see it because they know it's a butchered adaptation, whereas they would probably checked out an original cyberpunk movie. I don't believe it's a good business decision, just Hollywood execs being allergic to risk.
>Do you really think Ghost in The Shell
it's a recognizable ip
yes it is
I'd actually be much more likely to watch an original cyberpunk movie with scarjo than a live action remake of an anime let alone one that no live action has any hope of ever coming even remotely close to.

>would you watch a cyberpunk original film starring scarjo?
This. Remember how internet feminists and tofu enthusiast orbiters complained and complained about how women don't have enough representation in film, and how good scifi never gets made, and how there are never strong female leads in scifi and how it's a market ripe to exploit because TONS of people want to watch content like that? Remember when a couple years later a movie checking off all those exact boxes with an original script was put out starring Natalie Portman and a lead cast chock full of women? Most people probably don't because nobody fricking went out and watched it. It's almost impossible to get people to watch shit unless it has an extremely identifiable IP associated or a murderer's row of A list celebs/actors.
I watched under the skin because it was an original film and I might have watched scarjo in some other sci fi.
But I don't watch corporate HEY REMEMBER THAT THING THAT THING HAS A FANBASE WE CAN LEVERAGE. I still haven't even watched shit like the Star Wars sequels because the idea is so repellant.

Stopped reading there. GiTS is both highly regarded and very well-known.
It's iconic with movie buffs and weebs, not with actual bone-in-the-nose normals.

Most people never heard of the movie until the ScarJo version came out. You don't realize how obscure even the biggest 90s anime really was until anime in general started becoming more mainstream in the last few years. Dragonball Z is maybe the sole exception since it played with other Saturday morning cartoons.

is right, anime was extremely niche in the 90's especially anime that wasn't targeted to kids like DBZ, Pokemon or sailor moon, it was very hard to get anime in the west and most that did make it here had horrible dubbing and had the shit edited out of it, stuff like Akira, ghost in the shell, neon genesis, even as basic and entry level as that stuff seems today was really rare to come across In shops or video rental places

how do you not understand that in the age before the internet foreign cartoons targeted towards adult audiences were not a common thing to watch in the west? the dubs were usually bad, they were edited to all frick usually so that the classification board would give them a PG rating, the tapes were expensive as frick so not many people impulse purchased them, not many stores had anime in stock at all, the majority of people still saw cartoons of all varieties as children's entertainment and it was only in the 90's with the Simpsons south park and family guy that that view began to change, this stuff was not played in mainstream cinemas and if you wanted to see it you usually had to go to some independent arthouse cinema, anime was not a common thing to watch in the 90's and ghost in the shell was unknown to the vast majority of people barring early weebs, it was a different world Zoomer

you are either a Zoomer or a moronic weeb, normalgays had no fricking idea what ghost in the shell was, hell most probably still wouldn't know
The idea is that the Major doesn't think of her body as "her body" any more, she's been a cyborg for so long she's kind of moved to another mental state where "herself" is just her psyche, not her physical SHELL (get it?) which is why she's so obsessed with the A.I. and why she is willing to merge with it to move to a new plane of existence, and also why she's completely oblivious to the destruction of her physical body by trying to pull the lid off the tank.
Of course, I only know this because I read the manga. The Major has so few lines and so little development in the movie that you can't really extrapolate that from her actions, she comes across as a robot who spends most of her time staring into space.
I can just picture someone in an office in Hollywood showing her this picture. “So preferably you could look something like this” and Scarlett nods but just keeps munching on the donut.
it could have been awesome eyecandy and stand strong next to the original in terms of aesthetics. I haven't seen the movie but there are some interesting designs I've seen online. And I think Scarlett is not a terrible choice of actress even, she does look a lot like major (though not nearly buff enough)
Is it worth watching this movie? I'd be down to watch it if it has interesting scenes or cool designs.
it's worth a watch, the visuals are cool and it has the right aesthetic, scojo is in a skintight body suit the whole time, they change up the story slightly from the original so that it's not a completely redundant copy, probably needed a few more script rewrites but it's not as bad as weebs say it is, pretty comfy if you just wanna see some cool cyberpunk shit
She has that kind of voice and seems useful for that acting in this film, she can play anything like a robot. The character that played her mother sounded moronic, even for an japanese woman.
weebs believing that "goyslop" doesn't include sameface moe anime trash will never cease to entertain me. keep guzzling down BDs from the yellow israelite
Because people have heard of ghost in the shell and that it's very good but can't be bothered watching it, and this provided those people a way for them to (falsely) believe that they could enter that conversation with minimal time commitment or effort on their part.

Well known in Japan and to non-japanese Anime/Manga nerds. It's influence in America far outstrips its actual popularity among Americans
It really wasn't that bad of a film. The 1995 anime is obviously superior, but as far as soulless anime adaptation go, there are far worse
