He wasn't insufferable, except towards the people he was bugging. He's a very likeable character, and would be so if he was ugly, just not as likeable as he is when also good looking. But personally I don't think you can separate face from character, they're always emblematic of each other in some way.

It was just the way he acted because he could never communicate with people normally, but also he wanted the people on the street to buy his stuff. IIRC his treatment of his dad was just a front for his real love for him.

I think it's also the society has fundamentally changed. All around the world, anywhere that's even slightly built up, there's a whole lot more bureaucracy and official mandates and implicit removal of individuals' privacy and liberty. The world is becoming more and more a soulless technological husk. The neon lights were emblematic of capitalism just producing an authentic culture, you know people produce them and people buy them for their stores and it all works out naturally, but there's no room for that kind of naturally developed city culture anymore.

Most people prefer the drama of Chunking Express, but the overall atmosphere and world of Fallen Angels is better.
Best-of lists generally focus on a director's most popular film unless it's one of the really big directors, and in this case that's In the Mood for Love. Also, Chungking Express is better.

Its the usual "I always wanted to film it like this" George Lucas bullshit you always hear. All of his films have different color filters applied but Fallen Angels gets the worst treatment.

DVDs are fine, at least the ones I own are completely fine. I notice very often that 4k releases, Bluray or Criterion releases mess things up. Bluray can still be solid but not always
