I don’t see it that way. Goggins is amazing as always and the true protagonist of the show and has plenty pre mutant screen time if that bothers you, frog eyes is cute and likeable, and Maximus is depicted as a completely incompetent moronic techno fetishist virgin.
As for the supporting characters you’ve got chudmaxxed Rico from Hannah Montana who might as well be an IRL /misc/ poster with his investigation and he’s one of the best characters on the show, not to mention teaming up with his big dumb cousin for the investigation, and you’ve got Thaddeus from the BOS who was competent and likeable despite being comic relief.

Show is ok, only two blatantly woke elements: the troony brotherhood of steel woman, and the discussion with the overseer who is a blatant 'I AM SILLY AND RACIST!' character to push the writer's politics. But it's funny, because even when attempting to do that he still comes across as reasonable in not wanting to allow open immigration into his vault when we've seen how barbaric and dangerous outsiders are. My main issue with the show is just poor world building, barely mentioning or showing NCR, super mutants, any major settlements, etc. Also the gay Fallout 3/4 depiction of the BoS as religious paladins with over-the-top airships when they should just be a small sect of technology hoarders. Also the main nig was awful and I don't know if he was just a terrible actor or they wanted his character to be inconsistently switching between a goofball moron, a hero, and a psychopath. Overall, better than I expected. Season 2 has potential.

Would you stop liking something you currently love just because trannies said they liked it? Learn to think for yourself. NV is much better than F3 and anyone who thinks otherwise is a zoomer who played F3 first as a kid and has nostalgia for it. It's that simple.

Which Overseer? You mean Hank? How is he a racist?

Anyway the worldbuilding is fine. Like any sensible writers would they probably didn't want to overwhelm newcomers with 3 hours of established and abridged lore drop. Viewers can look that shit up on youtube if they want to (believe me there is no shortage of it). Everything required for the story was revealed. Everything else can be dolled out as the story requires it.

The cyclops who has a conversation that is blatantly the writer saying 'this is what right wingers are like!' even with the 'stinky food' meme that coloured folk like to cry about, complete with how he makes 'offensive jokes' and isn't supportive of immigration. Incredibly unsubtle stuff.
              >Anyway the worldbuilding is fine.
In any Fallout game you'll be in a major settlement within an hour and everyone knows and talks about some major hub or faction, etc. This show spent like 5 minutes in that small megaton place but was otherwise solely concerned with moving from vault to vault, stitched together with 10 cliched scenes per episode of violence juxtaposed with jolly music. No sense of civilisation or world at all really.

He was conflicted. Was bullied constantly. Framed for a crime he didn't commit and was nearly executed. Was used as bait by someome he idolized as a child. His reality was literally crumbling before his eyes. This is why when he was in the comfortable vault he wanted to stay. Until he saw his friend being captured and his sense of justice returned.

People think he is a bad character but you have to see the big picture. Also the brotherhood of steel really seem like the bad guys in this series. Not sure if that is intentional or set up for something.

          >Also the brotherhood of steel really seem like the bad guys in this series.
I'm subscribing to the theory that Hank didn't actually nuke Shady Sands, he technically never admitted to that, it was actually the Brotherhood who conveniently showed up in the ruins right after the bomb went off and who are more likely to have access to nukes than Vault 33.

Tim Cain said on his youtube channel that he thinks Vault-Tec was definitely willing and had a strategy to drop the bombs (probably coordinated with with the Enclave) but they probably didn't actually do it because Barb would definitely have not timed the launch to happen at a time when her daughter was at a birthday party.

Moldaver was a shit villain full of plot holes but I kind of like the idea that everyone and their dog from some crazy cult leader scientist to some random small town mayor is calling themselves the legitimate government like how everyone from Greeks to Russians to the Turks claimed to be the true Rome, or every random warlord announced themselves to be the new emperor of China every time a dynasty fell.

You have to turn your brain off to enjoy it. As in the show will make a point of showing how strong power armor is, allowing you to toss a large rock like a mile away, but punching a bear three times does barely anything at all. Oh also you can punch a ghoul and send him flying 50 feet, only for him to get back up and keep going like it wasnt anything.

It's a marvel tier experience, where everyone is quippy, and they jangle fallout shaped keys in front of you constantly to maintain your attention.

Theres also the nonbinary they really shove in your face, the black guy who is practically a copy of finn from star wars, and the constant incest jokes that really mean nothing to the story.

Is it trash? Nah, there's a good skeleton there, but its pretty typical of the kind of shit that comes out these days, only it's fallout themed.

      >Theres also the nonbinary they really shove in your face
1/3 of the first episode and maybe 5 min of the 2nd episode isn’t really shoving Dane down your throat. And the character isn’t typical woke, one character refers to Dane as “they” once and that’s it

        Anonymous

They could have just had the character in there and left it up the audience to discuss what they were seeing. No, they add them in, and make a point of not using he or she when the higher up member was addressing them. I don't care if they want to stick the character in. I think it's stupid to pretend its not a guy, as woman in the role of a soldier instead of a scribe is kind of fricking stupid and wouldn't happen, but it's fantasy so whatever. The show makes a point to put this character in your face and reinforce they are nonbinary, for no point. Just like the incest shit they keep pushing, it has no point. These hack writers can't help but insert this shit in here when theres no need for it. Just like how the black guy is a bumbling tard. Why is he even like that? He could have the same story experience acting like a normal person. I will say after the first two episodes all the dumb shit becomes less of a thing (except for not-finn being a bumbling tard all the time).

First 4 episodes are eh but the last four are pretty good TV, worth a watch. Goggins steals every scene he's in, the setpieces and costumes are high quality. I laughed at more than a couple scenes, they nailed the black humor.

Don't really like that they destroyed the entire NCR just like that but at least we're guaranteed to get some New Vegas/House kino in S2. Hell maybe the Legion even makes a cameo.

Don't want to make a separate thread so I'll just post here, but who writes this shit? The more I think about how much Moldaver and everything around her doesn't make sense the more implausible events of the show seem to be.

Thinking back, Wilzig is honestly one of the most confusing characters, we can infer that he's one of the pre-war scientists (who is both Vault-Tec and Enclave) and that he probably knew Moldaver beforehand. We also know that he's been working on cold fusion for years because the dog literally grew up. We also know that Wilzig ran away very recently from the moment Moldaver kidnapped Hank from the Vault to get Vault-Tec code I think? Here's where I am confused about though, are Moldaver kidnapping Hank and Wilzig finishing cold fusion mcguffin related events? Show seems to imply so, however, how did she know Wilzig finished the mcguffin or why didn't Moldaver go for the mcguffin right away, Bud's Buds were in a fricking Vault, from her point of view saving Wilzig should've been the top priority rather than going for Hank because if she doesn't reach Wilzig she'd have no use for Hank anyway. And she also had no reason to believe she'd be able to get Hank or similar person before she loses Wilzig.

So, basically, what I am saying is that Moldaver infiltrating Vault 33 makes no sense both if she knew that Wilzig completed the device (Wilzig should be top priority) and if she didn't know (she has no use for Hank) in the timeframe and order of events in the show.

Am I overthinking this or did the writers not think this through at all?

Nothing about Wigglez read as "pre-war human" to me. He was an Enclave scientist who defected to the Institute.

The fact that he traveled from BOSNYWASH to Venice Beach definitely indicates that, chronologically, he did his escape at least a week before he met Lucy on the beach. So if you play the story in order his actions were probably the first.

        >Nothing about Wigglez read as "pre-war human" to me.
well.. we don't exactly get to spend a lot of time with the guy but running into a literal cold fusion scientist in the wasteland would probably make me ask how old is he because that is something that was developed pre-war and fusion cores cost thousands of caps

          Anonymous

You do know what the Enclave and Institute are, right? He was probably a scientist from conception.

The more likely scenario is that he learned about and then stole the prototype from some storehouse or cache that the Enclave or Institute had procured in the 200 years since the world ended.

He connection with Muldaver, however it came about, is the plothole you should be isolating and examining.

Are you conflating "Fusion" with "Cold Fusion?"

The little blue pill, whatever it was, had a damn Vault-Tec logo printed on the side of it. So either that device was itself pre-war (and stored away with nobody paying it much mind) or it was built to exact specifications, logo and all, by Wigglez. But neither of those scenarios require Benjamin Linus to have been frozen at any point in time.

                Anonymous

It could be explained that Enclave found it, Wigglez was tasked with jailbreaking it but he couldn't and knew he would be "disposed of" for it and Enclave would eventually get the code anyways ( either jailbreaking, or doing what Moldaver did and just kidnapping someone who knew the code). So he ran away.

If you're reading things off of the Wiki then why are you asking if he is a pre-war scientist? It would say so on the Wiki.

                Anonymous

You can thus see the differentiation between a "Fusion Core" and whatever the "Cold Fusion" pellet was.

                Anonymous

It's foreshadowed (more like telegraphed) in one of the later episode pre-war flashbacks, where Moldaver explains that Vault-Tek bought her cold fusion prototype and shelved it.

Then in "current day" it turns out they were working on it in secret and this is the result. The Enclave most likely knew of it, because Vault-Tek was co-developing a lot of their tech with the old government from which Enclave descends.

The TV show is riddled with plot-holes and convenient coincidences, but this one is the one of the less objectionable ones.

            Anonymous

            >He connection with Muldaver, however it came about, is the plothole you should be isolating and examining.
It's honestly extremely baffling the more you think about it.

            >Scenario A: Wilzig doesn't know who Moldaver is from pre-war times or is a pre-war scentist himself. It's realistic that he would know who Moldaver is, show hypes her up as "flame mother" throughout the season, but why would she go to her considering NCR is in ruins, like, what protection from Enclave can she offer him is dubious at best. Also unlikely coincidence that he essentially finished her life's work
            >Scenario B: Wilzig knew who Moldaver is pre-war and specifically set out to finish Moldaver's project. Show seemingly is screaming that is the case, but plausibility of that is dubious at best as it would imply that him and Moldaver somehow were in contact one with another entire time, and if they were, and even if Wilzig was busted on mistake, it still makes no sense that Moldaver basically spared no effort to bring Wilzig with her life's work to her. She kind of got everything handed to her on accident she put no effort into other than kidnapping Hank.

    It's Fallout.

The character writing is on the level of Fallout 1, 2 & New Vegas. The characters are complex, develop over time and have fun dialogue.

Main story writing is on the level of Fallout 3 & 4. So not good and full of ridiculous plot holes. If you were able to tolerate these two games and still have fun, you'll be entertained here as well.

The show absolutely nails the atmosphere and mostly the humor. The vault sets are impressive.

The only woke tax this show paid is they/them character who turns out to be a good friend.

    Worth-a-watch / 10

Personally, I rate it at 8/10. Liked it overall, but the "plot" was only tolerable because the show nailed the other things.

Pretty solid take. I don’t necessarily like every narrative decision made by the show, but I enjoyed it.

I always worry when I see a diverse main cast that it’s just for pandering, but Max kind of felt like Finn done correctly. People say he can’t act, but to me, his autistic and strange delivery really sold Max as a low INT character kek. Really enjoyed his performance by the end.

        Anonymous

I suspect Max is done this way intentionally. A fumbling bumbling idiot with good heart who makes mistakes both in actions he takes and morality of decisions he makes.

To me, he's the epitome of chaotic neutral. I strongly suspect he's gonna have a generic betrayal-but-then-changed mind in Season 2.

You can tell Todd and friends are still absolutely seething over New Vegas and the pre-Bethesda Fallouts still being considered superior.

They absolutely rape and pillage the lore while telling the most generic CW story. The acting is awful, set design always feel fake and of course it has the status quo political humiliation ritual against the very people who popularized the franchise.

This. Fallout series jumped the shark with introduction of synths in F4. The Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave were able to preserve and barely iteratively improve pre-war technology. But a few children of eggheads were able to establish high-tech society capable of inventing and mass-producing synthetic humans.

That's so far out of left field, you can't even see the home base.

I genuinely hope that Fallout TV series does not bring these up again, and they get conveniently forgotten. Like the Chinese infiltration plot of Fallout 3.

genuinely the only "woke" thing I noticed (speaking as a non American) was the androgynous brotherhood initiate (and they're still called a Brother of steel)
it must be exhausting to live life in such a way that you see any more than that.

As a fellow non-American, the they/them character does kinda fit the militaristic nature of brotherhood.

If anything, given that we have them theys in >current year, it's likely they'll exist in future as well.

Can your literal autistic mind comprehend when the Roman Empire fell, it did not explode?

It's when women and minorities took power in the city. Years later they noticed only fix is to nuke it.

I'm this guy. I'm well aware of F4's high moronicness:

I suspect Max is done this way intentionally. A fumbling bumbling idiot with good heart who makes mistakes both in actions he takes and morality of decisions he makes.

To me, he's the epitome of chaotic neutral. I strongly suspect he's gonna have a generic betrayal-but-then-changed mind in Season 2.

              [...]

              [...]
As a fellow non-American, the they/them character does kinda fit the militaristic nature of brotherhood.

If anything, given that we have them theys in >current year, it's likely they'll exist in future as well.

But nice attempt at change of topic.

IIRC the only mention of the NCR falling in New Vegas was House making a prediction that they would in collapse in 10 years due to corruption, but we never saw it happen, not even in the DLC.

It's not a singular event that happened on a single day. Just like the fall of Roman Empire took decades.

It's the overall decline of NCR due to infighting and its failed expansionist policy.

Ceasar mentions that observing this decay is the reason why he established the legion in the first place:

      ?t=16

A few other characters mention the status quo as well. That NCR is no longer able to defend its territory, which is now subject to Legion, Brotherhood and bandit raids.

Well, if this is, as you claim, the popular opinion, then let's check what a popular information aggregate says about the Fall of the Western Roman Empire:

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_the_Western_Roman_Empire

                >The fall of the Western Roman Empire, also called the fall of the Roman Empire or the fall of Rome, was the loss of central political control in the Western Roman Empire, a process in which the Empire failed to enforce its rule

                > a process in which the Empire failed to enforce its rule
                > a process
                > process

                Process, not a day.

So. A popular information aggregate refers to a decade long decline as fall of Roman Empire (or Rome).
So people refer to a decade long decline as fall of Roman Empire (or Rome).

Which is kinda bullshit if you realize how vast the NCR is. But sure, why not, JJ Abrams logic, we have no idea what to do with the New Republic, so we'll just delete it. The annoying thing is that this NCR has no connection to the NCR from the games, it was destroyed by a pre-War threat that came out of nowhere and the games never established and are now lead by some pre-War person that also came out of nowhere and the games never established. Even Shady Sands is presented wrong.

Agreed. A large post-war nation struggling/crumbling by stepping into the same pitfalls as its pre-war predessecors, with its varied regions and cities having different reactions, would be interesting. A single isolated utopian city getting nuked out of existence off-screen by jealous 200-year-old corpos is not.

I marathoned the entire series last night from 9pm to 5am. Firstly, a few things about me, the reviewer.
I'm tall, White, blonde haired, blue eyed, and have fricked over a hundred women. I make good money working from home. I don't really watch tv nor do I own one. My last 3 shows I've watched have been Shogun, Chernobyl, and the Terror. My favorite movie is either the Mummy (Frasier version) or The Mask of Zorro. I've played Fallout 3, NV, and 4. New Vegas is arguably the greatest video game of all time if you count what the mod community has added to it. I hate israelites, gays, blacks, and pretty much everything that isn't White and beautiful. I care about animals more than people, and more about nature more than society. This is my review.

    1. Of all the things I've seen talked about on this show the one thing that convinces me that you're all a bunch of fricking mixed race mutt philistines is how fricking NONE OF YOU dedicated even a modicum of your time or energy to discussing how fricking based Norm Maclean is and how he, BY HIMSELF, is worth watching the show. Fricking every god damn scene with Norm is peak 10/10, Lucy's POV is how we are introduced to the Wasteland. Norm is how we are introduced to what Fallout is and why it is.
    2. I didn't know who the lesbian character was until the last 3 minutes of the season and even then it's a human woman touching another woman's hand as she dies. Maybe I missed some obvious dyking out. But I didn't understand that complaint where there's no other visible signs of homosexuality.
    3. I didn't realize who the trans person was until the cult scene (and I'm still only half sure it's her or him or however that actually works). That she was the only one and located in a vault filled w/ refugee freak science projects wasn't lost on me.

      4. Every scene there were obvious skill checks and stat checks which we see multiple characters having success and failure with.
Lucy has great intelligence and endurance and repair skills and while her charisma is high she fails practically every speech, barter, and stealth check. Her str and agi traits are definitely low but her unarmed skill is (along with science and repair) are her tags. Obvious representation of karmic good.
Max has really high END and LUCK, his INT and Charisma are putrid. I'm guessing his STR is probably above average. I think his AGI is probably low but his gun skill is definitely tagged. His perception might be the lowest in the show. He is CLEARLY the representation of Karmic Evil and it wouldn't surprise me if he's a Father Elijah class villain by the end.
The Ghoul is clearly a high level overperked over tuned character with 7+ in END, AGI, STR, and PER and LUCK while his INT is low and his charisma is a literal 0. Clearly highest gun skill in the show. Also an addict. Final assessment of karma: Neutral.
      5. I liked the story. It felt like fallout. A lot of the nonWhites get owned and/or humiliated in various ways so I didn't mind their DEInclusion.
      6. They did not do New Vegas justice in the final rendition. They basically removed everything that wasn't the Strip. It looks like shit. If they're going to follow in the footsteps of Star Wars and try to destroy what came before they are going to lose the fan base. I don't give a frick about the NCR, they were always the inferior playing option to the Legion, but if you frick with New Vegas we have a narrative problem. It'd be like taking Rohan out of the LOTR. It doesn't work because it can't.

Have you noticed that everything and everyone that's important in this show is pre-War? Which is kinda counter to the themes of FO1, 2 and New Vegas who kept saying the pre-War is irrelevant.

      Anonymous

You can make a good point with that actually, but only if you specifically set out a pre-war character to be the villain. Like the past refuses to die and shapes the future type of the deal. It's just that it seems like the show pulls out "actually, he could be pre-war" card only for convenience's sake. Unless the point of the season was specifically to make cold fusion reactor atonement for mistakes of the past, which is once again, never even hinted at, Wilzig was interested in finishing cold fusion reactor because it was convenient to the story and for Moldaver it was a passion project. Moldaver is also specifically the person who was already fighting Vault-Tek in the past, she's so good in the narative of the show both in the past and present she has nothing to atone for, it's world's fault for not listening to her. She was just doing her job that is coincidentally beneficial to people especially in world's current state seemingly just because she wanted to (we don't know what her plans possibly could've been if she wasn't killed, except for waiting patiently until BoS or Enclave rob her all the same)

    >Worth a watch
Pros: The production and sets are impressive if not downright amazing. I haven't seen a videogame adaptation that goes as far as it has regarding the art style and design. It's slow, but it's the first season. The characters are ok. Goggins is clearly carrying the show though. I hope they make him the lead.

Cons: They've taken too many liberties with the history of the fictional world instead of just picking up where the games left off, which would make their jobs easier. This is taking big chances with losing first time viewers that have never played/have little interest in the games. If you HAVE played the games, the writing is downright awful. The BOS is a glorified paramilitary comparable to raiders. They have next to no discipline in contrast to the lockstep technocult organization in the games. The NCR have effectively been written out of the show. This limits a lot of the story potential since the characters will likely just drag themselves across an empty wasteland instead of getting involved in the "Wild West" society presented in the games.

I doubt we will see the Legion either, which is a massive letdown since they are the most interesting faction and probably the most aesthetically pleasing.
    >or woke garbage
There's a troony actor and racemixing. I can't say the story itself shoves any leftist shit down your throat besides that.

BoS are written so out of character that I've seen theories that the show is doing it deliberately to hint at the fact that BoS we are seeing are a bizzare chapter developed from Caesar's Legion with very subtle hints, like Maximus's name (even though we know he's from Shady Sands, however, we don't know if it's his real name or name given to him by Caesar's BoS) or this BoS's insignia (it uses red and yellow colors, same as Caesar's Legion). People will literally go out of their way to justify bad writing as being intentional for this show.

If you usually notice woke stuff you will see it all over this show. The overall tone is marvel meme gag humor, not much to do with surviving in nuclear post-apocalypse. The worldbuilding sucks and the writers assume the viewers would know quite a bit about past events and specific details in the world, which means anyone who isn't a big fan is going to be scratching their heads wondering why they should care about x person/place/thing. In my opinion it does not stand on its own two legs because of that weakness more-so than the woke stuff. Maybe they will figure it out in season 2.

      >the writers assume the viewers would know quite a bit about past events and specific details in the world
Not at all. The show barely has any real connection to the games. None of the major post-war societies that were rebuilt in the games exist on the show. They're starting totally from scratch. One could easily go from the show to the games instead of the other way around.

        Anonymous

This. The show is so bizzarely written that it's obvious they are wiping the slate clean, but it also wants to imply that previous games happened and the fact that they happened and what happens in them constantly bites them back in the ass. They are basically trying to have cake and eat it too and fail at it either because they don't care or don't even know what happened in the games and why it makes events of the show implausible. If games happened show can't happen, simple as that.

I mean, it kinda ties to what Avellone's been saying, that Bethesda only considers their own games hard-canon. They are considering lore of FO1 and canon out of politeness, but they can't even be bothered to work with it and the second this lore starts interfering with their ideas, they will happily delete it. And this is happening in the show.

What's even more bizzare is that I don't know if his chastizing were just lies because he was angry and hoping to scare him or Finn knew he wasn't lying and is telling the truth? Because Finn is so fricking stupid throughout the show that he really could've lived for 20 years with Brotherhood of Steel and not realize they have capital punishment, he's just that poorly written. He's so stupid that among major copes about the way the show is written is that Finn was specifically written as a low INT character, I am not joking. Even though low INT is applicable to every main character.

Walton Goggins and his b***h wife were divorced at the start of the show. At worst she thought it's ok to nuke her daughter, at best, it might be a clue that because they got divorced Vault-Tec didn't include them in her Vault.

If anything I also provided a plausible explanation to the contrary point out that they were divorced and Vault-Tec are the ones who nuked her daughter possibly without letting her know or her being important enough to know that. It's entirely plausible that Vault-Tec still nuked the world and before they did that they literally kidnapped people they consider important enough to save.

      >It's good until the absolutely braindead moronic plottwist of "we nuked the world to sell vaults lmao"
This, and people are outright saying "well, maybe the show is lying, just because they discussed nuking the world doesn't mean they actually nuked the world", even though it doesn't make the conversation any better. And why did they even bring up Vault experiments in the first place? Like, I think it was specifically Mr. House who said that they can do those experiments, but in the games the experiments were held by Vault-Tek at the behest of Enclave as a research on human condition in closed space for prolonged period of time because Enclave came to a conclusion that irradiated Earth was a lost cause. We understand why Enclave decided to frick with Vaults, but why did these frick ups bring up Vault experiments? What does Mr House hope to gain from Vault experiments and how can he see that as something profitable?

And another issue people I think really fail to bring up is the fact that whatever is happening in Walton Goggins's flashbacks have to end with the very first scene of the series of him running away with his daughter from nukes. The daughter is portrayed to be the same age throughout the season, meaning she's like 6-7, so at most the flashbacks take place in 2076, that's the earliest possible time it can take place. So the show suggests that Vault-Tek came up with entire Vault Boy identity based on Goggins and came up with Vault experiments a mere year before the world got nuked? Wouldn't some of the vaults make sense only if they were built for experiments right from the start, but this show suggests it was a course-correction?

In games, the Vault experiments, as ridiculous as they were, made sense. In the show... no.

In the game, the Enclave was building a giant colony spaceship to frick off from Earth. But because they only had one chance, they used the vaults to dry test all the possible frickups that may occur during the interstellar travel. That was the point of the Vault experimint.

Genuinely how do things like that even happen? So they bothered to dig up a name from New Vegas to use that players would be familiar with, but they didn't fact check or make sure that their reference even makes sense? If you want to have Mr House in the show, ok, I can probably buy that he was invited by Vault-Tec for couple of conversations (although he literally just provided them with pip boys, but whatever). But do they just not have guys who have played the games, at least one nerd to point out what can and can't happen? If anything I thought Todd is supposed to be that nerd and I can sort of buy that he deliberately allowed NV material to be used but used in a such a way that would only raise more questions.

Its the genshin impact of videogame adaptations. What i mean is that people have been so used to mobile games being dogshit the second something something like genshin comes out that could qualify as a real videogame people eat that shit up. Even if genshin has horrible monitization and other issues its still more of a real game than raid shadow legends or clash of clans.
Thats what happened with the fallout show. We are so used to adaptations like witcher, halo, lotr the second something passable but still flawed comes out its lauded. Because standards and expetactions of the genre were so low.
