It just resets. Doesn't matter if he's awake when it happens or not.
Just about every TV show I enjoy has a Ground Hogs day episode & those are always my favorite ones. Now when I binge watch new series(or old ones I haven't seen in years) I look out for those episodes & everyone so far has had one. They must be fun & easy to write.
It would be funny if they made a Groundhog Day remake with Margaret Qualley and the best Bill Murray lookalike they can find, with the same premise but different plot
For me it's Margaret Qualley plays a producer for a local weather company. She goes out to Punxsutawney with "The Talent" played by a brown-haired blue-eyed actor who makes it easy for me to self insert as. The story follows many of the same beats. The weather man is a selfish douchebag, but he's got a crush on Margaret that he doesn't follow up on because she's too kind and conservative and he only goes for fast and easy women.
It's not more explicitly dark than the first movie but it's more explicitly sad when it isn't trying to be humorous. He goes through all the same feelings as Bill Murray, at first dread at reliving the same day, then relief that he can do anything he wants without consequence, then longing for Margaret which she does not return, then deep depression, and finally selfless kindness.
One day Margaret makes mention that her father is in the hospital in Punxsutawney with her mom by his side, and she's worried about him. The weather man is surprised to hear this because it's the first time she mentioned it in the thousands of days he's relived. He decides to go to the hospital and meet her parents, who are Rita and Phil. When he speaks to a seriously ill Phil, they both recognize that the other has lived Groundhog Day over and over again before, and Phil might even be reliving this same day with the new protagonist. Phil is conflicted, partially wanting to keep reliving this day because it might be his last with Rita, and partially wanting it to end because Rita is often sad to see Phil in this state.
The new protagonist starts being a good person from then on and eventually breaks the cycle. The end.

If this movie was remade today there would be a 30 minute set up explaining how his ex gf was a witch and trapped him in the time loop and also there would be an extended explanation on how the logic of the loop works and what he has to do to get out
Also one of the characters would have a long monologue exactly explaining their emotions like they are talking to their shrink
Plus casual swearing
Just catched Groundhog Day here on TV in my country .. and I'm wondering.. is there any more movies with this 'repeating the same day' theme? Not as good as Groundhog Day for sure.. but gimme some suggestions. I love time travel movies .. and this theme is sort of time travel ...
probably national lampoon
Favorite Groundhogs Day movie? for me? its Groundhogs Day

Is 'Die Hard' a Groundhog Day movie?
Besides there being a Groundhogs day office party at the start of the film the holiday really doesn't factor into the plot
Did you forget this scene?
Just because Hans turned out to be a groundhog doesn’t mean the movie is about groundhogs day
what about when it's revealed McClane's codename is "groundhog" and he just had his day?

what would happen if he just stayed awake until morning?
Did you even watch the movie moron
a while ago so i don't remember every detail but i don't remember him staying up for more than 24 hours
He still wakes up at 6 am, that's it
but how?
does he just faint?

he just snapped back to that moment when it would have been 6AM the next day
the real question is if he felt rested or not... I'd assume yes, but that whole line of thinking is a can of worms
Since he killed himself multiple times and returned to his previous state, I'd assume he'd feel as rested as he did every other iteration of that day.
>catched
For me it's Nancy

currently in the developmental stages at amazon
if you check your monkey's paw, i believe a finger has curled
Pitch me your sequel to Groundhog Day. Bonus if it includes Margaret Qualley

Frick you dont take this away from me too
Reads like a 90s premise tbh nobody would write that crap today
Stuff was better edited in the 90s though casual swearing was already creeping into movies
>it’s 1030 am
>my boss calls me asking where I am
>I told them I thought groundhogs day was a national holiday
This ever happen to anyone else ?
