It was literally unapologetically a fancast, that's the one claim you should take it seriously. I was even around tumblr when this shit happened.

I didn't think the fancast would be real until Filoni jumped on twitter and followed Rosario Dawson after some Ahsoka fangirls kept pushing her. It's weird that they never gave better actors a chance. Plus there were no plans for a live action series back then.

A comic book isn't the same as a 4 billion trilogy.

The point of a multiverse is more to eliminate the concept of "one canon" altogether; if it's true, they likely believe they can get the classic fanbase back on board with a mixture of "see, we take *your* Star Wars seriously as well, we made it part of the Star Wars Canon Multiverse!" and naked pandering slop like the Obi-wan show, *without* TRIGGERING the twitterhags and pretendy-journos.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to them that the latter will see through their efforts and know they can gain social capital/clicks by denouncing "obvious pandering to racist chudcels!" or that the former might consider the EU being officially placed on the same level as the Sequels just as much of an insult as it being deleted, even if technically the Sequels are being dragged down to the EU's level.

Although thinking about it, I could be underestimating Lucasfilm, they could be *really* committed to crashing the brand with no survivors and would use a multiverse concept as an excuse to even further denigrate the classic films and their characters by telling "new versions" of those stories where all their "Luke was a feckless loser who did nothing of consequence, the Star War was won by a succession of kickass snarky girlbosses!" fantasies are made real.

Well that was pretty obvious. Remember how Boba Fett had a completely different origin story before Attack of the Clones came out? Or remember how General Grievous was basically a slasher movie villain and then Episode III came out and he became a weak sniveling pussy?

Star Wars isn't a cohesive story. It's more like Transformers or Ninja Turtles where you can have multiple versions of the same character.

Expanded universe is a different matter though. In EU you are expected to believe that everything happened in the same timeline, and all inconsistencies are just mistakes or deliberate retcons. Multiverse is basically there's a parallel timeline somewhere where it's true. But I have never seen this idea ever used well. Admittedly I'm a follower of the everything is canon onto itself and nothing else school.

You are moronic to think that anyone involved in disney nu-wars is smart enough to pull off something like that. and even if they did, there's no indication that Filoni can make anything decent under disney. Mando was shit, so was Boba and Kenobi. They can make a thousand universes and they'd all be the same garbage. The reason that Mando contradicts the sequel trilogy is because they're all completely fricking incompetent, it's a sign of them not caring about their own lore, nothing else. If you're going to have a star wars canon that makes sense then you have to exclude everything disney-related. It's over.

They could frick it up with some Marvel style shit about hopping between different universes, but multiple timelines doesn't have to be inherently bad.

Like, suppose Ahsoka finally finds Thrawn/Ezra at the edge of known space, but it turns out that instead of some diabolical plot, Thrawn is preparing a fleet to head out past the edge of the galaxy to build a new civilization somewhere out there in the unknown. Thrawn offers Ahsoka the chance to join them, but she knows that this would mean she could never return to help Luke rebuild the Jedi order. Ahsoka meditates on the choice and sees a vision of the future where she accepts Thrawn's offer, in which she is the founder of a new force tradition free from the ancient Jedi/Sith feud, but back in the galaxy, the events of the Sequel Trilogy have taken place, with Luke failing and becoming a bitter old hermit, the New Republic falling into chaos, etc.

So Ahsoka declines Thrawn's offer and returns to Luke, creating the possibility for a different future where the Jedi are restored instead of ending with Kylo's school shooter moment.

      Mostly this.

Kathleen broke the covenant with the fans when she intentionally trashed George Lucas’s outline for the ST (to say nothing of betraying and humiliating her mentor). George wanted Episode 9 to end with Leia as Chancellor of the New Republic and Luke as Grand Master of the New Jedi Order. That was the story, that HIS story of the Skywalker Saga. And Kathleen ignored it and rewrote the story to turn Leia and Luke into losers and failures. It’s unfrickingforgivable and ruins the entire Saga. This controversy will never be over until they figure out a way to fix it. If it takes Ashoka seeing a multiverse and changing things I’m fine with it

It's completely pointless to declare a multiverse unless you want every canon to acknowledge every other canon. Different canons already existed within the EU, and even now we have the major Canon/Legends split. People can understand well enough that they are separate things without some bullshit in-universe explanation of multiple worlds.

The only difference between having multiple canons, which is what we currently have, and having a multiverse, is that the latter bridges the different canons. Why would you want that?

            Anonymous

Kathleen doesn’t acknowledge the EU (“Legends”) as its own viable universe/ canon. That’s the problem. They outright say that it didn’t happen. Even just doing the bare minimum thing and announcing that “Legends” is its own viable universe in a Star Wars Multiverse, and opening up that timeline for future media development might work towards bringing some of the fandom back.

If that was the motivation behind this move, I would agree with you. But if you ask me, going this far to open Legends back up again sounds unlikely. If anything Disney would just use this move to turn Star Wars into the equivalent of a gacha game.

I actually think this is a good idea, if it's their way of making the EU cannon again. They fricked up 90% of what they've come up with since the buyout and pissed off the fans who actually spend money, so this could be their escape hatch out. That way, leftists can have incel Luke and Mary Ray Sue, while normal old school fans can have Mara Jade and bad ass Luke.

I’ve always thought that this was the simplest, most obvious thing to do. Star Wars lost MILLIONS of fans over the last 10 years through their mediocre, chaotic, illogical, mean-spirited story decisions. And they have made very few new fans to replace those they lost. This puts in Lucasfilm in a kind of demographic death spiral.

I’d say if Kennedy goes for the multiverse route in Ashoka that would be her power play or “Ukraine” moment. It would be a bold move to ensure that the Star Wars Empire survives its demographic death spiral, and it would probably work. Otherwise she’ll just let the decline happen and go into exile in a few years

                Anonymous

                >and it would probably work.

Eh, I have doubts about that. The reason it works in Marvel and DC is because they've been around for 80 years (US soldiers were literally reading the same comics during World War II) and have always had to constantly retcon shit and multiversing as just a mechanism to prevent the fanbase from hemorrhaging.

Star Wars had been around for a little under 50 years and its major strength was the relative maintaining of a singular continuity from start to finish.

You're right, it's bold, but it seems more likely to backfire after being widely recognized as an attempt by Kathleen "less brains than John F." Kennedy to avoid being held responsible for her own poor decisions.

The Last Jedi was actually the best way forward if they weren't going to go the EU route, in terms of actually advancing the story and themes. The problem is it was a shit movie tied to the shit sequel trilogy.

Luke himself recognizing the true nature of the Force and the way in which his father brought balance, by destroying both the Sith AND the Jedi, and that he was making a mistake by trying to ressurect the order and restore the dichotomy, would be kino.

They could have done so many interesting things with the Last Jedi both philosophically and narratively. No, Luke was creating an entirely new philosophy and Order of the Force. Something that George Lucas literally intended for him to do since the start of the Saga.

            >No, Luke was creating an entirely new philosophy and Order of the Force.
They definitely fricked that up when they had him go with Jedi orthodoxy when Grogu came around.

            >the Lucas Outline for 7-9 have been out there for LITERAL FRICKING YEARS now.
Yeah. Disney followed the broad strokes of Lucas' outline for Luke in the plot. He was even supposed to die in his Episode 8.

I'm suggesting the synthesis of ideals presented in kotor 2. Even Lucas knew that the ego-death of the Jedi wasn't the way to go, and the Sith just get consumed and become evil slaves.

Any serious sequel movies would need to unify these concepts into a new idea and actually explain what the Force is (and there is a good explanation).

Luke redeeming his father with love is a good jumping off point because such a thing isn't actually very Jedi.

What is the relationship between master and padawan then? When you put a child in someone's care for 10+ and make sure that they live together, train together, meditate together and effectively forbid even a sibling or second parent-like figure entering the picture familial love is pretty much bound to happen.

Duology gave Thrawn a deeper motivation, but it didn’t change the fact that in the original book trilogy he killed subordinates, tortured prisoners, reneged on deals, and was honestly an butthole to Mara.

New Thrawn has literally never done anything wrong in the books other than have space autism. I’m reading the first Ascendency book now and he gives pep talks to little girls and plays cards to pass the time.

It's ok. But there's not a lot of action. It's pretty slow and meditative, it's more about trauma, PTSD, guilt and recovering from it to find a new purpose. If you're interested in what Ahsoka was doing after order 66, how she got recruited into the rebellion, and how she got her white sabers, then go ahead.
