Finally watched Gravity Falls and...

It wasn't that good.
In fact. As much as 80%, maybe even 85% of the show is completely skippable.
The problem may have been that I went into it with very high expectations, because on AskReddit after AskReddit thread of "What are the best shows?", GRAVITY FALLS would show up in the Top 5 answers among lol actually amazing stories like Breaking Bad.

This was like... 85% of the show is complete mindless filler? The finale still somehow made me cry but I don't know why; I was genuinely annoyed while watching at how much time was wasted on throwaway sideplots to get to any actual story reveals.

Why is this show so hyped? I don't get it man.

I don't don't blame you, I think the show is good but the fandom hype it too much and their fanon started twisting their perception of what the show was really about, which is an episodic comedy with some lore.

Have you watched any of the million clones Disney made afterwards? I reckon a big part of what made Gravity Falls great is that it was original, but the "original" part is completely lost if you watched one of the copies first.

Yep, same like with music a lot is linked to the environment something first premiered in.

      >85% of the show is complete mindless filler
sounds kinda off - the show while it aired was promoted as a story about two kids spending their summer in bumfrick nowhere with some supernatural elements.
It wasn't meant to be like Twin Peaks where every episode adds a piece to the puzzle (the cipher codes aside - that's a big part and one of the things you just had to be there for).

The most memorable things personally for me where the livestreams with the international community so some people watched from work or fricked their sleeping schedule and folks autistically screencapping and overanalyzing literally every frame kek
      Good times

Nooooooooo don’t compare my amazing flawless TV show that I totally haven’t put on a pedestal to this kid’s cartoon!

        Anonymous

Yeah. The best thing to compare it towards would be Phineas and Ferb but with a mystery in the background. It's fun for what it is and it being the first to pull off the episodic comedy with an ongoing mystery was impressive at the time. Alex Hirsch choosing to leave after Season 2 before the show grew stale helps too.

It's better than any of its clones DTVA produced after it, at least. I still don't get why DuckTales 2017 is praised for its writing when 75% of its DNA is ripped directly from Gravity Falls but worse.

False. Watch older cartoons and you will see that they are not the first.

Okay, I amend my statement. First cartoon of the 2010's that did it well enough to became popular because of it.

I'd seen the entirety of SVTFOE and some of Owl House before starting on GF. Both of which I'd say are actually much better. Are either of those the clones you mean?
What I really liked about GF was the characters, especially the siblings. I just thought the plots that they gave them were almost always inconsequential, like you could completely forget the episode even happened and it wouldn't matter for the overall plot. Actually, it was a totally fine show for what it was. It just wasn't what I thought it was going to be.

Anon I was watching the show for the first time after being told how amazing the story is.
And I sat through like 40+ episodes of "let's have a dance-off" or "let's have a mayor contest".

Lol. Also normalgays overrate animation and vidya . Do you know how many people think that atla is one of the best things fiction has to offer because they don't actually read books?

The show is not a serialized story show. It's an episodic kids comedy show with arcs. I don't think it's that original. But it was solid and right now is primetime nostalgia for it. Reddit is mostly teens, early to mid 20s adult who are the primary proponents of shows like this AT, RS and other 10s cartoons. Of course it doesn't stand up next to prestige dramas. Almost no western cartoon does.

Charts? Is there an official chart for each board?
Or, do you mean if someone makes a "charts" themed thread, and people post casual suggestions?

Yeah. Here is the one for Cinemaphile https://comraderecs.tumblr.com/post/17325351458/cartoon-recommendations.

OK yeah that makes sense, like people are reminiscing about the shared watch experience and the hype of that and that subconsciously gets mixed in to the factor of how good they rate the actual show.

Cinemaphile had a bunch of charts. Most of them were on imgur before getting deleted. Cinemaphile had set up quite a complex wiki with plenty of intricacies. and information.

Part of the big hype was wondering where the story would go next; and without that element you're left with a lot of half-baked plots and hit-and-miss jokes. It was kind of a 'you had to be there' situation

      You had to be there.

If you were actually there then the disappointment would be increased tenfold because the show never lived up to all of the waiting. Seriously that shit was on hiatus between every episode.

Your first mistake was asking reddit. I quite liked gravity falls but I definitely wouldn't have rated it as high as they apparently did. Even among kid's shows it's hardly one of the best.

The long hiatuses and the mystery aspects allowed the shows fans to mythologize it while it was airing and it never went away.

It was loved because of the mystery. You probably already knew what everything was and didn’t appreciate the fun. God damn kids these days expecting everything to be like Lord of the rings in terms of story and they watch shows that look and act like SpongeBob and get mad they’re jokes.

I didn't know spoilers of the actual content, but I just knew it was supposedly a really great mystery story with some big enchilada reveal.

      An enchilada was indeed revealed, but we spent most of the 40 episodes forgetting there was even a backstory and instead trying to find dates for Soos or whatever. ;O;

        Anonymous

Anon don’t you understand how crucial it is to the ongoing plot that Soos get’s laid, we absolutely HAVE to make episodes that could be focused ln something important and have them revolve around Soos being a virgin instead.

It's an episodic show for kids. It's best to be watched weekly instead of in one setting. Also the fandom around it really did elevate the show.
